Subject: I have some questions and problems with DSON - help?

JAG ( ) posted Sat, 26 October 2013 at 4:32 PM · edited Fri, 15 November 2024 at 9:21 PM

I have installed Genesis 1 and 2 as well as the DSON files to a Runtime for PoserPro2014.  Now she loads fine, but there's this weird cartoon line shader around her that I can't seem to get rid of.  Does anybody know what this is and how to remove it?  Also, I've installed Victoria 5 for Genesis and she loads fine...but has same cartoon outline thing going on...and her V5 textures do not match her at all.  Genesis texture presets work fine, but the V5 looks like I've got the wrong textures on the wrong figure.  I've double checked the install of the V5 UV files and other DSON CF files, and everything is where it's supposed to be...but she doesn't seem to loading with V5 UV setup...but instead loads with Genesis UVs.  Anybody else having these issues?

Oh, one more curiosity...why is it when I export Genesis figures through GoZ to Zbrush, they arrive in Z with a low resolution and high resolution versions combined?  Which one am I supposed to be zbrush morphing on...and can this be stopped?  I only want the HR one in there!

JoePublic ( ) posted Sat, 26 October 2013 at 4:51 PM

Switch subdivision to OFF in the DSN support script and the "cartoon line" will be gone.

Then switch "Skinning Method" for her to "Poser Unimesh"

Then set Subdivision Levels for Render to "1" in the body actor.

Genesis 1/2 will now use Poser's own subdivision algorithm. The OpenGL preview will be the original low resolution, but the actual render will be subdivided.

Can't help you with your GoZ problem, though.

But AFAIK you can only actually morph the low resolution mesh, as the subdivided high res mesh is only virtual.

JAG ( ) posted Sat, 26 October 2013 at 5:26 PM

Awesome...but ummm...not to be stupid...but how do I shut the DSN script doo-hickey off?  I have no clue what you're talking about here.  Can you dumb it down for me??

JAG ( ) posted Sat, 26 October 2013 at 5:31 PM

Ohhhh...unders scripts...I found the subdivision setting...got it.  Sorry I'm a dummy.  Never had to touch that script before.  Got rid of my cartoon lines...but any clue on why my texture for V5 does not match her UV?  When I load V5, she should load with Bree texture...which she does...but it doesn't match her body.  I can add a Genesis texture and it matches up fine.  Somethings wonky with her UV I think.

JoePublic ( ) posted Sat, 26 October 2013 at 6:27 PM

The UV-switching between different UV sets for Genesis is a bit wonky in Poser.

But I just loaded V5, then loaded the Young teen Justin texture, then M5 Phillip, then V5 Bree, then the Sample child tex, then the Sample Lena tex without problems.

Have you updated Poser, the DSON importer, V5 and the Genesis base files to their latest versions ?

V5 with five different UV sets.

Or did you accidentally try to load V6 Bree to V5 ?

V6 Bree and V5 Bree use the same thumbnails.

JAG ( ) posted Sat, 26 October 2013 at 6:41 PM

Nope...just loading the base V5 figure file from the installed files.  AKA-clicking on my V5 file to load her.  She loads with Genesis UV's and the texture that loads with her by default does not fit her.   I'm not sure if I've got the most recent DSON version or not.  I've up to date on Poser files...will go check that and see.

Thanks again for help!

JoePublic ( ) posted Sat, 26 October 2013 at 7:00 PM

Hmm, I guess I spoke too early.

Seems that Poser's "Unimesh skinning" breaks Genesis UV-swapping.

So you either have to load Genesis with the UV set you need already applied, or you have to turn on and off the DSON subdivsion instead of using Poser's native one to avoid the outline in the OpenGL preview.

This is how V5 renders for me with the Bree texture.

(Using EZSkin and scene fixer to replace the default shader)

JAG ( ) posted Sat, 26 October 2013 at 7:17 PM

I got rid of the cartoon shading by running the script as you suggested.  And I also just downloaded and updated my DSON to the latest version and it did nothing.  V5 still loads with incorrect UV's.  She loads with Genesis UV set and not V5 UV set.  Or at least I'm assuming that the BREE texture set that loads by default on V5 is supposed to be V5 specific.  Whatever default texture is loading on her is not fitting her UV's.  Maybe that states it more simply.  You can load a Genesis texture preset however and it looks perfect.

estherau ( ) posted Sat, 26 October 2013 at 9:41 PM

I too get the incorrect UVs.  usually looks fine at first and I can render okay, but if I save the poser skinned Cr2 adn reopen it in poser again, it has the wrong UVs.

Here she was with the Bree texture.  Looked fine in poser. I poser unimesh skinned her, still looked great. I saved the PZ3 and reopened it, and this is what happens...

now i'm reopening my non-poser skinned PZ3of the same scene. taking a long time to open of course (dson is slow)

and guess what.  same UV problem. nothing to do with skinning or not skinning poser - I think.

estherau ( ) posted Sat, 26 October 2013 at 11:06 PM

yes definitely.  the unskinned pz3 loads in but the UV is messed up.  also, everytime I move the camera after just loading it, it crashes poser. I can't really work like that.

so eventhough when one first loads in the Cr2 and turns subd to off, everything seems hunky dory, it is actually not a useable option.

The UV skining only works as long as Genesis is actively loaded by DSON.

Poser can't save the UV swapping info, that's why it is broken once you re-open a saved Genesis file.

But I just tried, and you can re-activate it by swapping UV's again.

I loaded V5 from a saved PZ3 and the UV was mis-matched. Then I loaded a Michael 5 texture via DSON, and that loaded fine.

Then I re-loaded V5 Bree again via DSON, and now the UV matched again.

estherau ( ) posted Sun, 27 October 2013 at 3:02 AM

In conjunction with the crashing (which i think is due to two python scripts runnning at once) and this texture problem , it is barely useable.

I wonder if daz know about these problems, or if they even care.

Please make bug reports - a technical support ticket to Zendesk which will be passed on the developers, assuming it isn't already known (and if it is and there's a fix or workaround you should be told about it).

How, exactly, do you use DSON to load anything?  I was under the impression that when I click to add my character to an active session, DSON was automatically loading the figure and setting it up in Poser for me.  I mean this is what happens, except the UV's are not right.  How do I "swap UV's"?????  Are you saying to just add a material preset for another figure from  POSE or MATERIALS preset?  Sorry...being a Poser-head, I'm just not familiar with this "swapping" and stuff.  Poser figures generally just have one set of UV's, ya'know?  Probably why P vs. DAZ battles erupt so often.  Ha, ha.  Daz seems to want to make things simpler for users...but in the end it just ends up being more confusing and chaotic.

Thanks for all your help so far.

Seriously???  'Cause they often pay attention to these things...about as well as Smith Micro does.  Unless a thousand people complain about the same thing, nobody cares.  They generally will not respond at all unless the problem can be reproduced by them and with things like this, program setup and system configurations can be 99% of the problem -- meaning they won't be able to reproduce it in-house.  And being it's a "POSER" oriented problem, the likelihood of a response is even less than usual.

RHaseltine ( ) posted Sun, 27 October 2013 at 11:17 AM

Applying a (.duf) materials file (including the original for the textures) will swap the UV set. Mec4D has a set of presets on her site that will swap the UV set only, withot doing anything to the rest of the settings.

My unhelpful post earlier seems to have disappeared  but it pointed the OP back to daz3d (but shouldn't that be duzn't) where they document and troubleshoot all that stuff for anyone :cursing: Right?

I have to agree that the ZenDesk seems to be your best chance getting the initial problem solved. DSON is still in development, so DAZ still seems to care about Poser users.

At least a little.  :-)

I'm not an advanced Studio user and I don't even have it installed right now. Just following the development of Genesis as I'm interrested in rigging improvements.

From what I've read, once you click on one of the Poser Companion File icons in your Genesis library, a script will tell DSON to create a "virtual" cr2 that is saved in a temporary folder under a random name.

The info what UV-set to use is also stored alongside this temporary cr2, because the UV-set can be swapped at will if you load another .duf material file.

(Doesn't work with "conventional" Poser material or MAT-pose files. Only a material .duf file that gets loaded via it's Poser Companion Files can actively switch UV sets)

As I said, if you save that "virtual", DSON-loaded Genesis cr2 in Poser, the UV-set info "gets lost", so Genesis reverts back to it's default UV set.

Once you "poke" it by loading another (.duf) material set, a fresh UV-set gets loaded, so textures and UV sets will match again.

At least that's what I think is happening, but as I said, I'm far from being a Studio expert.

Yes, it's all quite complicated, but Studio and Poser tech is VERY different now, and it's actually a small miracle that Genesis works as well in Poser as it does now.

And yes, a "native" Poser figure would be of course better, but none of the currently available figures are technically that advanced as Genesis is.

I'm not using Genesis much, as I actually "do" have "better" figures, but for the average user who has to/wants to simply use figures out of the box, I think Genesis is a viable alternative, especially now that the joints behave like they should.

estherau ( ) posted Sun, 27 October 2013 at 5:53 PM

It's close to being usable now. It needs to be faster and it needs to be able to save Cr2s andPZ3s with correct UV/texture.  Less poser crashes with genesis would be very good. But that last little step might be the step that can't happen.

Well, Vicky 5 loads in 22 seconds on my 4GB i5 Laptop.

Yes, that is slow, but IMO not that bad compared to how long it took to inject all morphs into V3 or V4.

A little workaround to speed things up:

Convert the V5 texture you want to use to V4 or apply a regular V4 texture instead.

(After you switched V5's UV's to V4, of course.)

Then save that copy of V5 with that texture applied to your runtime just as you'd do with any other figure.

If you re-load her, V5 now loads directly from an actual Poser cr2 and not via DSON.

She now loads in half the time, and as she reverts back to her default V4 UV set, the (V4) texture you saved her with will match.

This also saves you the EZSkin step, as the supplied .duf SSS shaders look pretty awful in Poser.

You can still swap UV sets afterwards by applying a different .duf texture, but she'll always load with V4 UV sets, as those are the Genesis I defaults sets.

You can also safe her with Poser Unimesh skinning SubD already enabled and DSON SubD disabled to save that extra step, too.

I had no problems loading her from a saved .pzz, either.

It's not ideal, but as I said, just a workaround that might speed things up a little.

:-)

"You can still swap UV sets afterwards by applying a different .duf texture, but she'll always load with V4 UV sets, as those are the Genesis I defaults sets."

So this will only work with females if they always revert.  this explains why I haven't been able to use this method for Freak 5 for example.

and it also explains why some people haven't noticed the problem ie the V4 texture users.
