Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 28 11:20 am)
P6 rendered single thread. P10/Pro2014 renders on as many threads as you have.
If you get the GameDev option, you can export an FBX animation and render it in Unity, Cry, or Unreal.
Poser 12, in feet.
OSes: Win7Prox64, Win7Ultx64
Silo Pro 2.5.6 64bit, Vue Infinite 2014.7, Genetica 4.0 Studio, UV Mapper Pro, UV Layout Pro, PhotoImpact X3, GIF Animator 5
Ok... As part of a recent and long overdue pipeline/hardware Upgrade
I recently made the Jump up from Daz Studio 2.3 on OSX
to DS 4.7 windows
Animation tools?? ..What can I say.... :-(
not much new going there and yes I can now personally confirm that creation of keyframes with IK on.. and later creating body movement frames with it off destroys the animation done before that point.......still broken :-/
Looking at options for alternative rendering ( Firefly= Non Starter for me)
Congrats on the upgrades! Yah. On the other hand, there seems to be more animators asking, so maybe the volume is getting up there enough to matter more.....
I mean, it =could= happen......
As for rendering options, Vue is still there. A lot of people are using either the Reality bridge with Luxrender, Or Octane with its python bridge. Octane requires Nvidia cards with CUDA capable GPUs (and stable Nvidia drivers.....). Don't have the GameDev version yet, so I can't comment on the features there. However, there are also some activation issues there, so... If you anticipate using a game engine for rendering of something like machinima, it would probably be worth it (the mesh decimation feature alone would be worth it, if you didn't have access to a robust modeler, which you do, I think).
I think the Morph Brush is the single best thing they added to Poser in years, and that reminds me, haven't tried the fixed update yet!
DAZ are losing customers for not having one in DS, I know that for a fact.
I'm surprised you don't like the Firefly renderer though. I wasn't too fond of it when it first arrived because the way the shadows worked really annoyed me for some reason, can't remember why now, but the stuff I've seen done with it as it's evolved, and what people have done with the material nodes, is something that impresses me over and over. I think it's a superb renderer, and it would be the icing on the cake if they could make the current renderer make use of the GPU to speed it up, because that's my biggest issue with it, speed (or rather the lack of it).
But I agree 100% about the animation tools in Poser, they're nothing short of a prehistoric joke!
"DAZ are losing customers for not having one in DS, I know that for a fact".
Honestly not to start that "thing" yet again, but as a person actually running DS pro 4.7
I can offer the purely technical observation/opinion that the superior nature of the genesis Rigging,HD morphs and Clothing system largely precludes the need the types of "Fixes" Often performed with the Morph brush.
And technically one loses a "customer" when a consumer stops spending money on your products ........ DS is free.
I just made a very nice, Final smoothing tweak to the nose to my CG self Avatar, with the poser pro morph brush and saved it as a face pose.
Over in DS I simply applied the pose from my runtime , to the figure and have my result there in DS.
Use of more than one program greatly Expands one's Creative options
"I'm surprised you don't like the Firefly renderer though".
No surprises there...too SLOOOOOOOWWWW.
I am primarily an animator/VFX artist.
Even Bagginsbill conceded ,in a thread, that Firefly was not intended
for rendering animations particularly with GI/IDL
I have Maxons Superfast GI engine as well as vray
And lately for high quality stills I have been very Impressed with my results
of sending poser content to Blender Cycles( Via a free DS script).
"Yah. On the other hand, there seems to be more animators asking, so maybe the volume is getting up there enough to matter more.....

Honestly DaleB, I have decided to look at poser ,or any apps, animation tools, in the same cold objective way I look at Tablet Computers or Smart phones etc.
not working for your needs??? .....simply buy&use something else.
Having Liberated Myself from an exclusive Mac Environment,
I now have use of my Long held License of Endorphin,
As well as Iclone 5.5 not to mention the Much improved aniMate2
In Daz Studio 4.7
The Generation of realistic poser compatible motion ,outside of poser, is No longer a concern of mine I can literally do anything and produce it quickly,
For Example, Just wait to you see the Dynamic Catastrophic Decompression animations that we are producing with endorphin for My Space based Sci fi, CG film "Galactus Rising".
where the figure is realisticly sucked upward or sideways
,(yes Endorphin can change the direction as well as the strength of gravity),
with a Dynamic "constraint event" on his left hand holds him in place
as long as I choose, until he flies away.
all while the "intelligence engine" makes him struggle violently &realisticly to save his"life".
Then I export the Motion too Simple basic bone rig poser Compatible BVH
All without me setting a single keyframe.
Waiting for SM or anyone to implement 21st century Character motion tools
is just not Logical in light of the many options Available today.
Hi I am intrested to know how to bring my selected face from face room on the Ryan figures. I am using this Ryan in oder to bring tlk designer to work correctly.
Also need to know the appropiate sounds for lipsyn. to function also.
I have also notice in my program 2012 poser. the langue or syn should be of the langueges shown in poser like:french, japan, or for langueges available in poser. how do you handle this problems. Thanks and hope you undestand my statements on this matter.
@Wolf
Genesis is good, granted, but it's still very clearly a CG figure when you Pose it. Try lifting it's arms above it's head and watch what happens around the shoulders and armpits, lol, it looks like a severe case of dislocation or something. Same if you try to do anything half-way exotic. The ass on a bent-over Genesis doesn't look much better than it did on V4, it still looks way off, nothing like any ass I've ever seen on a human. A Pose Brush is good for fixing stuff like that and making it look human, making things flow better by correcting what is clearly a CG bend. It's good for quickly adding assymetry as well. Those pathetic ancient-style deformers are the only reason I don't use DS, they're too much work, too cumbersome. They both have problems; with Poser it's the prehistoric animation tools, and with DS it's the prehistoric deformers. Either way, I love the Pose Brush in Poser, and until DS gets one I won't even be looking at DS again. It's supposed to be a "figure tool" so it's about time they started concentrating "figure" features instead messing around things like "content managers" and other irritating bloat most users could do without.
Regards Firefly: as I said, the only real issue I have with it is that it's slow, so yup, I know it's slooooooooow :-P
Needs some GPU-love to make it faster!
Couldn't the IK and animation be overhauled with a 3rd party plug-in?
If you have z-brush, then the morph brush is rather pointless. Of course if you don't have z-brush then it's a handy tool. I do know that DS handles GoZ much better than Poser tho. That's one of the features of DS I prefer over Poser, and since I do use z-brush, DS not having a morph brush is irrelevant to me.
"Couldn't the IK and animation be overhauled with a 3rd party plug-in? "
I would imagine so.
the new animated constraints system tells me that the ground work for a working IK switch is already present
After all IK is just propagating constraint on the rigs limbs.
But as much I have griped about the broken IK system ,the reality is that
modern character animation programs dont really depend so much on
a workflow that leaves it to the user to manually switch IK on/off.
The broken IK switch is the least of the issue with poser animation tools
when you have used nonlinear, procedural motion systems Like
I we have in Iclone or even Daz aniMate2 you realize that motion generation
purely by manually setting keyframes and pulling on spline graph editors is a vestigial
approach from the past.
EXAMPLE: MODERN ANIMATION CREATION
"as I said, the only real issue I have with it is that it's slow, so yup, I know it's slooooooooow :-P
Needs some GPU-love to make it faster!"
Actually, for me at least, it not just Fireflys rendering speed
For those who only render single stills Firefly is fine
I have NO problem waiting several hours for a high quality single image
from Blenders Cycles when the result is photographic realism
For me it is the overall lighting and camera management abilities that make or break a program for producing animations longer than the 5-10 second clips you see on youtube from poser users.
for example the ability to"shoot" from multiple cameras and switch cameras
during the render.
Just watch any modern movie/TV show and sit and study the camera cuts during an action sequence or even romantic conversation.
those cuts are achieved by shooting the same scene from multiple cameras
simultaneously and deciding how to cut them together for storytelling effect in post .
The ability to attach a camera to a spline and have it fly through or around your scene with complete control over what it targets or zooms upon
Also the ability to export camera& light animation date to industry standard
programs Like After effects&Nuke for compositing of effects that match your
original camera movement.
And we have already gotten the bad news from Bagginsbill about trying to render flickerless GI in poser......Forget it.
I have set a NON GI ,standard lighing"frame budget" of seven minutes
(per frame) for my current animated film project.
The attached image is production still rendered in the quality and complexity standard I require for that seven minutes per frame
**Note all of the reflective surfaces and there are animated textures
that have to be calculated per frame as well*
Not to say this image could not be done in firefly but I doubt anyone
could render similar within seven minutes.

HI EVERYONE:I HAVE NOTICE THE FIGURE OF JUDY POSER 5 I CANNOT PERFORM TH LIPSYNC. AS WITH ALYSON AND OTHER AFTE POSER 6. ALSO NOTICE JUDY FIGURES AS WELL FACE ROOM MAKE A BIG DIFFERNCE IN QUALITY. OR BEAATY. I LIKE JUDY WHICH LOOKS MORE REALISTIC. I NEED A WAY HOW TO PUT JUDY TO TALK AS ALYSON DOES.PLEASE ADVISE A BETTER AND SIMPLE WAY TO DO.
Thanks, hborre... if you hadn't posted I wouldn't have realised there was text there...
As to the DS customer and DS being free thing... just a point here; if you get (free) DS to use Genesis, you pay for the figures and the gear... a LOT. DAZ is not a charity, they have a business model to generate income from their products, hence the really DO have customers.
Lecturer in business and law hat put aside now... back to Poser!
I'm interested in this discussion for one thing, though... I've heard DS4.7's native renderer is slower than firefly and has less control over IDL lighting. Is that true?
I'll have to look at using Blender as an option, but I'd be happy enough if we got instancing and GPU support for Firefly. Being able to do what Carrara can do would be VERY nice!

Ok... As part of a recent and long overdue pipeline/hardware Upgrade
I recently made the Jump up from Daz Studio 2.3 on OSX
to DS 4.7 windows
And up from the ten year old poser 6 OSX to poser Pro 2014 on Windows 7.
Have not played with it much ,but a big thumbs up for the morph brush!!

Looking at options for alternative rendering ( Firefly= Non Starter for me)
Right now With DS 4.7 I use a free one click script to send my scene objects
to Blender 2.7 where all Mats are instantly converted to Cycles Material Nodes.
I think there is a similar one somewhere for poser pro.
Added a Copy of my Old Mac P6 , 27 Gig ,Runtime to my PC and PP2014
Loads all my legacy content with no issues thus far
Right now the Old Mac is working at full Hardware& RAM Capacity turning out HD frames From Cinema4D of my animated film project "Galactus Rising"
At any rate I can sit and create animation Data (PZ2&BVH) With DS& Poser pro and Endorphin and save it to my server and have poser compatible Character motions ready for the next shot.
Had a Disasterous first Go at the "Fitting Room" clearly attributable to my bad habit of jumping in and winging it without referring to a single sentence of the feature Documentation.
Cloth room seems way faster but that could be that My New PC is Clearly faster than My 8 year Old Macbook.
No comments on the Native Figures as I will Not be using them
Oh...Did I mention that the Morph brush is Awesome!!!
