Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Jan 24 1:08 pm)
Well I've got the same result on Roxie and Rex but not on Dawn, or V4.
However on Dawn and V4 when I flip the skinning type over to unimesh rather then traditional, the new zone vanishes. At a guess it picks up only material zones in the obj at that point. So ..... it may be one of those things that can't be changed.

I'd file a support ticket and see what they say...

Ok I selected the groups I wanted in UVMapper and assigned a new material, saved that out as a different .obj and edited a copy of the .cr2 to point to that and it works for both Traditional and Unimesh skinning. However this used to be just a few clicks right within Poser and the grouping tool. Wonder what is different about the new figures that changes that. I'm amazed PP2014 has been out for so long and this bug wasn't mentioned anywhere.
Boni, you choose the Unimesh skinning method when you want to subdivide the mesh. If you check the Properties you'll see where you can configure the subdivision in both the preview and render. Rex and Roxie are purposely lower resolution figures to showcase Poser's subdivision.
WandW, where do I file a support ticket? Through the SM site? Should I just IM Teyon here or at RDNA?
Poser classically has always viewed figures as a collection of bodyparts, each group as a part, with weld statements to smooth out the joins on the fly. This is why morphs have a dial in each part, as well as a master dial in body.
But if you apply a subdivision function to that setup, the mesh pulls apart at the edges, the seams are visible and its a mess. You can see this if you drag an unwelded poser figure into a modeling program and subdivide it. Ugly.
So Unimesh skinning looks at the obj as one solid thing, not parts (unified mesh ... it makes sense when you think about the name) . This enables subdivision to do its thing, and give you a nice smooth clean figure. I wouldn't call it a bug per se, just a feature that doesn't work the way you wanted it.

Well I did submit a question at SM support mainly because the same characters behave differently (Ginger and Ginger 2) so it's not altogether the unimesh skinning that is causing this but something about the new figures. Maybe they've been optimized for subdivision whereas the older characters weren't? I'll let you know what SM tells me.

I only just recently got PP2014 and after doing a couple of searches I didn't see this mentioned but if it is a known issue sorry for bringing it up again. I was trying to group and assign materials to Roxie's legs so as to be able to change the shader into a stockings one when I noticed that the new material was not showing up.
During the cloth simulation (where I changed to Traditional skinning to do it quicker) I saw the material and that's when I realized it would not show up when subdivided with the Unimesh skinning method. Same thing happened with Rex. I was beginning to think it was Poser so I tried other figures. It worked fine in both skinning methods.
Then I figured it was something about the PP2014 figures and sure enough when I tried it with the cartoons the old Ginger worked great but Ginger 2 had the same problem of disappearing materials in Unimesh skinning.
Can someone reproduce this so I can submit it in the hopes that the new PP2016 figures don't suffer the same fate? Oh and yes, I did render just in case it was just a preview thing. Same results.
