Subject: Fur pattern with dynamic hair ?

Necromuncher ( ) posted Fri, 24 March 2017 at 6:13 PM ยท edited Wed, 15 January 2025 at 4:55 AM

hi there, i'm fairly new to the forum and poser 11. couldn't find anything about this subject neither here on the forum nor by using google, so i'm hoping for some help from the community by creating this thread. I wanted to do a leopard-like fur pattern with the dynamic hair, but wasn't able to do so. i tried to link the hair to the diffuse color; linking the texture to the hair color and i took many more different approaches, but nothing worked so far. i've read, the hair should use the color of the texture it's growing on by default, though this doesn't work for me so far :/

any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance!

Load your pattern into both inputs in the Hair node replacing the Noise node. Root and Tip. Hair is now patterned. Done.

thanks, although i'm sure i tried that, i will try again and see if it's the UV coordinates i didn't get right in my first try. unfortunately, my windows got corrupted two days ago and poser won't start anymore, so i'll be able to say if it worked or not after i reinstalled windows.

Just make the root and the tip the same image map. Your skull cap should also have the same image for the best effect. It's really a lot simpler than it sounds. Management is supposed to be monitoring this thread to provide some guidance so hopefully one of them will pop by and point you to a thread in the regular Poser Forum that has images. Try searching my username. I posted a short tutorial on this a few years back.

I tried a simplified texture on a ball, to see if it works better compared to my character model. I applied what you told me to, but i fear it didn't work as intended. I'm posting an image to show how it looks with texture only, with black diffuse color and with white diffuse color. You can see the pattern underneath, but the hair itself doesn't show the same pattern.

any ideas ? btw. searched for your name, but couldn't find any of your posts older than 13rd feb. which doesn't include any type of tutorial :/ fur pattern.png

appreciating your help btw. ! ^^'

try setting the highlight size to 0. It looks like you might be getting too much of the gray off of that.

ok that helped with the visibility of the pattern, though it's still a little dark. giving it a brighter diffuse color (like grey or the same color as the texture) makes it harder to see. changing the lights didn't do much either. is there anything else i can do to improve the brightness of the fur or do i have to modify the texture itself ?fur pattern 2.png

Also try changing the root and tip colors to white.

Sorry; I haven't received a notification from Rendo in years, and I expect expert staff to help you as suggested in the title of this thread so I seldom check it out. Try this: Untitled-1.jpg

ok. I got things working with Parkdalegardener's setup. So something's off. The screenshot of the shader looks good. Double check that you're working with the hair prop and not the ball. I mess that up all the time.

ok i've got my new pc back from the workshop, installed poser anew and tried again to get the fur to work. i increased the hair amount and size (tip-width 2, root width 4) and set it up as told. i also didn't put any texture onto the surface of the ball to ensure i'm not actually changing the options on the ball, but on the hair. it still doesn't work :(

Have you tried a different texture and or lighting setup to see if the problem persists? Also is poser updated to latest service release (11.0.6.33625)?

different lighting and textures, same result. but indeed, it seems i don't have the latest version; mine's 11.0.3.32055 i'll google for a way to update my poser real quick

parkdalegardener ( ) posted Wed, 05 April 2017 at 5:22 PM

The above looks like the hair node with default blonde texture to me. Have you run the sim more than once? You may be texturing a previous hair lodged in Poser's ram stack somewhere. Stranger things have happened.

I've used the same setup on dynamic hair for more Poser versions than I can remember. The hair should render in either Firefly or Superfly render engines with the setup I've shown. May be a SR issue but I can't remember this shader not ever working.

Like I mentioned above; maybe the friendly staff that are supposed to be monitoring this thread and bestowing wisdom will lay a little on us over this. Let me think a bit and try a different approach. Maybe I can figure out your problem.

Sounds like an issue that was addressed with latest release.. This is from the SR 6 readme.

'SuperFly: Strand based hair now has proper UV coordinates, allowing it to be textured by the surface underneath'

Glad it works and I'm not going insane. I don't use Poser much these days and I guess I never noticed the hair node was out of wack as I keep up on the SRs. Thanks bwldrd for noticing this.
