Subject: Spike from Clothing

Renderholic ( ) posted Tue, 04 April 2017 at 6:54 PM · edited Sat, 28 December 2024 at 10:04 AM

Was trying Wilmap's Medieval Style Dress for G2F in Poser 11 and I am getting a large spike sticking out from the hip. I'm looking for a fix. I contacted Wilmap but she was no help. She just said she doesn't use Poser. Any suggestions?Untitled.png

On Wilmap's website under tutorials is one on common problems. Here is how she says to fix the issue in Daz:

Spikes and Deformations appear

  1. Select item and then open the Parameters tab. Here you will see a list of settings. Find the one that says Mesh Resolution, click on the drop down arrow next to the box that says Catmark and select Catmull-Clarke (Legacy). The item should now look normal.

Problem is this dropdown selection doesn't appear in Poser 11.

I am not at my system today, but I have had a similar situation and need to check out how I corrected it. I will get back to you tomorrow.

If the dress is a conforming item, and the spike happens during bending, check that all geometry is inside the fall off zones for that bend using the joint editor. => Enlarge the fall-off zone for that particular bend to cover all geometry.

If the dress is weightmapped? You will have to paint the weightmap for that geometry that "spikes" in that bend.=> Only possible in a Poser-Pro version.

In the latest Poser-Pro versions, you can also simply load the dress obj, go through the fitting room, and let Poser create a fresh cr2 for you.

Hi. The section of the dress that is deforming is assigned to the right hand - but the dress has no bone for the right hand - so poser doesn't know how to assign this to the dress figure.

This would need to be corrected in Daz Studio using the Geometry editor to move the polygons assigned to the rHand to the rForeArm Face Group.

It doesn't take very long to do but you would need to know your way around the Geometry Editor in Daz Studio

I think Posers grouping tool can do the same. Or take the obj file into Blender and adapt the geometry grouping there. How to load an obj file in Blender, see my first tutorial on YouTube : Poser2Blender2Poser on tonyvilters channel.

I wasn't sure if these were needed - but here are the instructions for changing the dress in Daz Studio so that it will work in Poser. - Not the right forum but it might help I suppose.

Open Daz Studio

  • Load Genesis 2 Female
  • Load the dress – then on the Parameters Tab select the dress from the drop down list.

Now open the Tool Settings tab – if you can’t see it do the following -

  • Select - Window - from the top tool bar - Select Panes (tab) > Select Tool Settings – and left click on the tab when its loaded.
  • At the top of the panel there is a drop down list next to Active Tool – Select > Geometry Editor. Don’t do anything with it..

Make sure the dress is still selected and Right mouse click in the viewport -

  • On the drop down list choose – Geometry Selection > Select by > Face Groups > rhand
  • Right click for a second time in the viewport
  • On the drop down list choose – Geometry Assignment > Assign to Face Groups > rForeArm

Now choose the Node selection tool – from either the toolbar above the viewport or from the Drop down list on the Tool Settings Tab – this just makes sure the Geometry Editor is closed.

On the Parameters Tab select Genesis 2 Female

  • On the Menu Tab select > File > Save As > Wearable(s) Preset
  • Choose where to save the dress – Give the file a new name – click Save
  • The Wearable(s) Preset Save Options Box will open – click Accept

Find the new dress and create new Poser Companion Files

Changing the item in Poser leads to issues as the item has other ungrouped bones (i think genesis 2 has the extra pelvis or some such) - so the hip of the dress will vanish after regrouping

I usually find just playing with the falloff zones sufficient to get the spieks resolved back to normal.

Infinity 10, I'm not sure what you mean by falloff zones. That's a new one for me.

Every movable body part on a Poser model works within a "sphere" of influence. As long as your body part is within that sphere or capsule, everything works as it should. However, every now and then something happens and the sphere needs to be adjusted or the sphere's influence "fall's off" and it does not act properly.

When I recently had a similar issue with the trouser cuff of a marketplace item in Poser 11, I sitemailed the vendor, to VanishingPoints great credit they replied within 2 hours with a corrected copy and explaining they had "adjusted the joint center on the left leg" it worked, ( I'm not pretending to fully understand the how and why of that)

This tutorial from PhilC gives a good example and the procedure to correct it. Poser Joint Parameters 2

I Really don't want to upset anyone - but - unfortunately adjusting the joint parameters or trying to add the deformed section to the weight map won't work on this clothing item.

Poser can't access the rhand section of the dress, it's not assigned to a bone and poser doesn't know what to do with it, so poser has placed it in infinite space, which can't be accessed by the joint editor and it's weight painting tools.

Exporting as a cr2 from Daz also wouldn't work without correcting the face groups first. If you do use the cr2 export function in DS the rhand section won't be exported as it isn't assigned to a bone.

You could do as tonyvilters mentions and export the obj from daz studio and use it as dynamic cloth or follow the instructions for fixing the dress in Daz Studio I left above.

I'm actually surprised that Poser displays the spike - normally it removes items without bones - much like the effect seen when trying to use Genesis 3 in Poser

sorry to be a debbie downer

No problem adzan.

For this particular dress the hands are the issue. I just added the video for completeness for viewers that visit this forum, because mostly it is just a matter of adapting the fall off zones.

I'd take the dress into Blender and regroup it properly and then chase it through the fitting room.
