Subject: Trying to match a color and it's not playing nice

rokket ( ) posted Wed, 19 July 2017 at 9:11 PM ยท edited Mon, 18 November 2024 at 4:45 PM

Someone familiar with RGB or HTML color codes for GIMP/Photoshop, can you please help me?

I've used the color picker, but the lighting and materials on this suit make it impossible to pin down the color. I am trying to match the overall blue hue on Superman's suit. justice-league-movie-cast.jpg

I have the RGB codes for the Man of Steel movie suit, but this one is different. Just lowering the HSV doesn't get my anywhere near. Here is what I came up with, and as you can see, it's not even close. I was thinking maybe change the specular color, but I don't know if that will do it.

Any suggestions?

Try making the specular color a light (high value) but intense (rich saturation) blue, rather than white. In the poster, the highlights are a brilliant rich blue. Don't know if that will get you what you want, but it's quick 'n' easy to try.

Could try colour balancing the image first. There are better reference pictures out on the internet

ironsoul ( ) posted Wed, 19 July 2017 at 11:56 PM

The suit in the film was "chromed" latex + other layers. The chrome will change how the specular works which might explain why its difficult to match

Hmmmm. It would be interesting to see the effect of a Fresnel_Blend node (base color inner, intense brighter shade outer) driving a microfacet_ks node might be.

I could try that. I am using a pretty basic shader right now. I haven't even thought about using Freshnel or any other nodes...

If you're home (not at sea), you could send me the textured wip mesh. If at sea, a screenshot of the shader you are using. I'll experiment a bit. Don't know if it will work. Oh, if you don't hear from me for some time, it's likely due to connectivity issues. My in-house local net works fine, but I keep losing internet connection.

Nice! The sample image reminded me of the effect of using a coating layer in other render engines which makes the surface nearer the light brighter but the other faces darker. The metal effect in the suit may be causing that. One thought is making a chrome/gold material and blending it with a latex material using a fabric/chain mail like mask - this would probably work better in Superfly than Firefly as the mask would need to be quite fine.

I am trying something right now using the PhysicalSurface node. I'll post the results.

Not quite what I thought it was going to look like. Oh well, I'll wait for seachnasaigh to come up with a better solution.

My instructor in my color theory class in college said something that stuck with me for years. Color is dependent on the color, angle and type of light being used to illuminate the object. Certain shades of red will look purplish in florescent light as a key example. Go by what you have learned about the material elsewhere and you will most likely come across the shade you were looking for.

Someone else told me to look between the lighter shade and this darker one and I would find it. Looks like you were both right. Another render on it's way. It's on pass 8 of 64... Superfly.

I found the hue was after. But I don't think this materials setup will really fly, so I am going to wait to see what the master comes up with...

Back to modeling. I have to finish the torso piping.

Got your email, Rokket. I'll likely be working on my network setup this evening -time permitting- but I'll experiment with materials on your suit once I get the network fixed. If I get the network fixed. ><

That last render is looking good. :D

No problem, cousin. Take your time. I need to get off the webs and get the model completed anyhow!

And Boni, thanks for the complement!

How many passes do I need, or should I say, what is a good render setting to get skin and not have all that graininess in there?

Latest news: because of Henry Cavill's other movie commitment and sporting a moustache to boot, they will digitally remove it when he appears as Superman in JL.

prixat ( ) posted Wed, 26 July 2017 at 10:12 AM

I heard that out of the 30 million they are spending on the reshoots, 29.5 million is to digitally remove the moustache!

You know, it's probably me, but I'm not a fan of the looks of this Justice League. The costumes look like something someone just threw together.

tonyvilters ( ) posted Wed, 26 July 2017 at 4:06 PM

Well Earl, I have to agree. It seems that all those "Big TV and Movie Boys" have absolutely NO inspiration left.

They just "shrinkwrap" some latex on their stars and "Go".

And really, I just "hate" shrinkwrapping. Most Poser clothing is completely "molested" by shrinkwrapping it to the figures.

That's a "function" that should be "un-invented". It completely destroys reality.

tonyvilters ( ) posted Wed, 26 July 2017 at 4:10 PM

@ Rokket

For a suit like this, and with the materials it is made of, the biggest problem is the light and reflection. You can get the perfect color for one light set, and it will completely change in another light set with other reflections. Pretty hard to reproduce.

rokket ( ) posted Wed, 26 July 2017 at 6:45 PM

@ tony Yeah, I've noticed. Every picture of this suit looks different. So I settled for a happy medium. I am going to render it in a few different lighting situations when I do the promo shots anyhow.

And I didn't know about the mustache. That's pretty funny, really. Now when I see the movie, I will be looking for the mistakes!
