Subject: odd observation re black textures and reflections

Tried to make a black texture map for some boots, but they wouldn't render with any highlights, no matter what I did. Discovered that black objects simply don't reflect! A lighter colored texture map turned to black with the texture/object color dials works jes fine. I suppose the answer is to use a reflection map for black textures???

You can't use black for the reflected color, but as long as you have a light color there everything should render with highlights, as on the shoe on the left, which is set to pure black. The shoe on the right has a reflection map, I've never been happy with the results of combining texture maps with reflection maps (as the two seem to fight each other), but reflection works O.K. with a bump map.

Uncheck "Apply texture to Highlight" and see if that makes a difference. -JH.

I've put some time into this problem and this is what i came up with: 1: Make the object color white( the area you want highlights) 2: Load the silver reflection map and check the two boxes under it. 3: Select highlight to white at 75% 4: Set the reflection color to 111,111,111. Hope this helps, Morgan

Jeff--thanks, that worked. Of course a black highlight on a black texture will be invisible!... (slapping forehead)......
