Subject: Poser Physics 2012 won't install. Ideas anyone?

galaxiefilm ( ) posted Wed, 13 December 2017 at 6:58 PM · edited Sat, 04 January 2025 at 6:18 AM

This is not a problem with anything I've purchased here at Rendo, but Smith-Micro has been of zero help (and is now just ignoring me). So I was wondering if anyone else has bought this product from Content Paradise and has been unable to install it.

I'm running Poser Pro 2012 16-bit in updated Win 7 Pro Edition 64 bit. (Yes, I have the disc version for PP 2014 but have not installed that upgrade yet as I'm still finishing a project I started in PP 2012. And I have no intention of upgrading to PP11 until I see all it's issues on this site seriously begin to wane).

Anyway, I purchased Poser Physics 2012 during their recent Thanksgiving sale but I get stuck in a loop when I try to install it.

Whenever I attempt to make the installation of Physics, I click on its install logo and get a message that says, "Poser could not be found on this system; ... Please click OK if you would like to manually locate your copy of Poser."

So, I click okay and I see the screen that's pictured in the attached JPEG. I locate Poser and click Okay. Then, the same window pops up again, asking me to find Poser. It's correct location is already selected. And I hit Okay again. Then, the same window pops up again, asking me to find Poser. It's correct location is already selected. And I hit Okay again. etc etc etc. Again & again & again.

Finally, I click "cancel" instead of "okay", and I get a screen that says, "Setup is not complete. If you exit now, the program will not be installed. You may run Setup again at another time to complete the installation."

I hit "yes" and exit set up. If I hit "no", I get the "where is Poser?" screen again.

The installation fails on two different computers that I have, so I don't buy that the applet is okay.

I've tried initiating the install in administrator modes and in Windows diagnostic modes. No difference.

Has anyone else ever encountered this and, if so, how did you resolve it?

Smith Micro is now totally ignoring my communications.

About to initiate a credit card charge back. THAT might get their attention.Route to Install.jpg

Just a wild shot here, but maybe the installer is looking for 'Poser.exe' while you have 'PoserPro.exe' instead? Have you tried making a dummy file called 'Poser.exe' and see if that helps?

In addition to what DreaminGirl said, I'd also recommend checking permissions. Starting with Windows 7, some sections are cordoned off for security reasons.

You will have much better success if you ask over at the Poser forum that SM has - that is where all the cool kids are now.

Thanks, gang.

I'll try the SM forum first. Didn't even know that existed. Did it come about after RuntimeDNA got absorbed?

Interesting idea to create a Poser.exe file. Would I just create an empty file labeled that and place it in the same folder?

BTW, I said PP 16bit when I meant 64 bit. Silly me.

ssgbryan:

Hmmm. Yes, I've run into permissions issues before.

But I tried installing as an administrator. Wouldn't that get around it?

Yup :)

Create an empty text file and rename it Poser.exe.

I'm afraid that planting an empty "Poser.exe" file in the Poser Pro 2012 folder failed to work -- but my thanks to everyone for suggesting it.

Received the same suggestion over in Smith-Micro's own Poser Forum.

I believe this is a permissions issue and/or something in a Win 7 update is wreaking havoc here.

Don't know how to get around it.

I have the same problem as you had, Poser Physics 2012 won't install. Did you find any solution to the problem? First I tried to install Poser Physics 2012 to Poser Pro 2014 on my main computer. When that didn't work, I tried to install it on another computer with Poser Pro 2012 and Poser 9, but I still had the same problem. These two computers run on Windows 7. I tried installing Poser 9 and Poser Physics on my laptop, which runs on Windows 10, but it didn't change anything, some problem all over again.

Mimi_Mimosa,

No, it seems to be a "permissions issue" that popped up after a Win7 update took place. It wouldn't install on two different machines I have, both running Win7 x64. So I made Smith-Micro give me a refund.

Initially, they were ignoring my requests for help. So, I then initiated a charge back from American Express (since I had used my Amex card for the purchase). Suddenly, SM wanted to talk. We tried to get it to work, but no go. (They will say, BTW, that it works on their machines, of course -- but the fact that it failed to install on two machines at my end finalized its failure for me.)

Eventually, I gave them a pledge that I would delete the product and they issued me a refund.

I love Amex, btw, when a vendor tries to screw me on a purchase. Had I not paid with my Amex card and not been able to initiate a charge dispute with them, I suspect that SM would have just ignored me and kept my money.

That said, I still trust Smith Micro more as a company than I do DAZ -- but that's just my opinion, of course. Still, losing the Poser development team was not the brightest move on their part.

I have recently upgraded to PP 2014, which I understand already has a form of physics built in. No plans on "going up to 11", yet.

You're probably right about this being some kind of a Windows issue. I noticed, when looking for a solution, that the problem seems to begin in December 2017, and there actually was a Windows update then. I've contacted the support of Smith Micro, but so far we haven't got any further than me proving that I know where my Poser Pro.exe is on my computer. I'm going to ask, if it would be possible to get the Python script files as such, so that I could put them manually in the right directories.

Best of luck.

Please let me know if you're able to do that.

Thanks.

One other option is to not install Poser to the programs file, rather create a Folder at the root of C: such as C:Poser and try it there. Windows should not interfere as you are not messing with Programs Folder. As a side note in Windows 10 when I was at work transferring a file and it asked to select the location It displays C:Fakefilename instead of C:EXFile

One other thing Poser Physics 2012 is a third party add-on. You may want to contact the author about the problem also.

Excellent suggestions, Richard60!

Thank you.

I originally had Poser installed in G: (another disk), but Poser Physics wouldn't install. Thinking that Poser not being in the default location was the problem, I uninstalled Poser and reinstalled it in C:Program Files, but it didn't help.

@galaxiefilm & @Mimi_Mimosa: You may want to look in C:\Users\admin\AppData\Local\VirtualStore; as of Vista and later, Windows UAC (User Account Control) diverts a lot of write operations aimed at program files to the virtual store if it thinks it may not be legitimate.

Lots of older programs run afoul of UAC; it is why Poser now puts the user's content library in public documents, not in the program files runtime.

I have P5 and P7 installed on my Win7 machine, but I installed them to a folder I named ProgFiles which is not in program files. That enables software written for WinXP to write to their own folder.

seachnasaigh, I did find some Poser related files in C:UsersadminAppDataLocalVirtualStoreProgram Files (x86), but these files were present (and the same size) in C:Program Files (x86). In C:UsersadminAppDataLocalVirtualStoreProgram Files there weren't any Poser related files.
