Subject: Importing obj's with multiple meshes

FCLittle ( ) posted Fri, 09 November 2018 at 1:07 PM ยท edited Thu, 09 January 2025 at 5:47 AM

I've recently begun to think of selling some of my models for use in DAZ. I am very new to DAZ and when I import a model made up of separate meshes (geometries) they arrive as one solid mesh. Is there a way to import an obj and not have this happen, or is there a different file format I should use. If, however, there is no way to import a model and keep the separate meshes, is there a way inside DAZ to group separate meshes once I bring them in separately. Thanks for the help!

They should import as groups (assuming the items have different names and are exported as groups from the modeller). You want either a separate OBJ for each item, if they are fully independent, or if they are meant to articulate you need to rig the thing as a figure (using the groups to guide bone placement and as selection targets for the posing tools).

So far they've always come in as one mesh, not as separate, grouped meshes.....and inside Maya--where it was modeled--they're all placed within a hierarchy and named differently. I'm not sure if there's something I need to do on Maya's end when exporting them that I'm not doing.

I don't know about Maya, but in Blender I need to select 'Polygroups' when I export the obj. (Maya might call it something different but it'll have it) I can't remember off-hand the import settings for DS. But instead of 'Import Obj' , you need to go to the 'Figure Setup Tools' and import the Geometry to there Then select 'Create figure'. There's a tut by Sicklyield - it uses Blender but the DS side is the same: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vNFHv8K8qKg

Thanks so much for the help, guys!....I'll report back after trying this out.....

Create figure worked, although I may go the route of importing the separate meshes and grouping them in DAZ. Can anyone tell me how to add a texture map to the diffuse channel?

Never mind, I see that the browse button does that....Again, thanks for all the help, guys!

By the way, here is a Maya render of the model I'm working on.....Biwa_NEWER_CROP_01.jpg
