Subject: Blender 2.8 gripes

PoalaVandel ( ) posted Thu, 22 November 2018 at 7:29 PM · edited Fri, 08 November 2024 at 11:41 AM

I don't like the new interface for Blender 2.8. I think it is geared more towards Maya users. I don't like the widgets and point and click. I do like Blender 2.8's sculpting tools though. I think 2.79b is superior. There are a lot of tutorials for 2.79b. 2.8 is still in its infancy. I don't think it is bad I just wish I had the option for 2.79b's workflow and interface.

There are currently many new tutorials are being released for 2.8 even modeling lighting and focusing on the new EEVEE real time render I would suggest some of these tutorial creators like CG Masters, CG Geeks and Jayanam to name a few

I've been using it for several weeks now and absolutely love it. I don't care who/what or IF it's geared towards anybody (which I doubt). Not having to memorize a pile of shortcuts makes me much faster. I use a wide variety of software and simply can't spend the time required to learn more than a few oft-used shortcuts. This also makes it tons easier for the new person and the occasional user. Long time Blender users treat mastering the interface as a rite of passage. I'd rather just make stuff.

I haven't tried 2.8 as yet, and for someone who's been using Blender since the old 2.4x versions, I happen to like the keyboard shortcuts, mostly because any time I have to remove my hand from the keyboard to use the mouse, is a waste of time. Then again, I've been typing at a speed of over 100wpm for decades, so I guess I'm conditioned to do as much of my work as possible using the keyboard.

That said, I had read quite a while ago, that one or more of the Maya developers were consulting on the development of Blender 2.8, so I'm not surprised they've influenced how the new UI works. I've been playing with the Educational Version of Maya for a couple of years after taking a class, and I like the Maya UI, but that's probably because it's "new" software to me, so I didn't have to "change" the way I used it because I had been using a number of older versions that I had become very used to. Changing from the old Blender 2.4x version when the first 2.5x version came out was quite a shock, but it was a change for the better, so I plugged along and learned to love it.

I personally won't be abandoning 2.79b, but I'm definitely looking forward to playing with EEVEE for sure.

I have tinkered with 2.8 to follow a couple of tutorials plus sort of my responsibility to start getting familiar since I try to answer everyone's questions (or at least find a good resource for answers) and yes it is taking a little to get use to bu like Miss B said won't be abandoning 2.79 anytime in the near future. When 2.5 came out it was buggy but it matured and me with it so give 2.8 time it will I am sure become great but keep 2.79 it won't hurt

Hey All

Been a while since I've been in here bloodey real life gets in the way lol.

Anyway been playing with the beta for a week now and have been able to crash it more often than not Specially when using particle systems as brushes in dynamic paint. And throwing animations at it created in 2.79.6 caused major issues with eevee crashing the whole computer. And the changes to short cuts have slowed me down but that will fix itself as I start to remember them. Although have currently got a lot mapped to 2.7x layouts. The speed increases in cycles are a bonus. But vertex selection is a pain and connecting and disconnecting nodes is a little different. As mentioned above sculpting is very good. There are a lots of little issues that need fixing in it, it is a beta though so when the release comes about I would think it will be much smoother. Until then 2.79.6 will be my go to and 2.8 will be just playing around.

I was never able to do anything in Blender. That "Sheldon Cooper" UI just used to drive me crazy and didn't seem to make sense. But now, yup now with 2.80b I still might never become a Blender expert, but at least I could do something with it. Needs time and I do like it. Something to explore now.

I couldn't get into Blender in the old old interface (the one designed by programmers). The new(er) one helped me loads (that and following tuts) and now I'm all about the keyboard shorcuts (improves my speed no end). I haven't tried 2.8 yet with the new(est) interface but like anything, I'll get used to it. I might have to set it back to 'right-click select' though because muscle-memory has made that my go-to in Blender (but not other apps). I'm using 2.79b for work but I'll try out 2.8 and eventually move over once it's proven stable.

I happen to agree about the keyboard shortcuts, as I've always found every time I have to take my hand off the keyboard to use my mouse, my workflow is slowing down. Not so much with 3D software as it did with Word Processing and Spreadsheets. but still, I've always preferred them.

I hated that old 2.4x UI, but struggled through it until the current UI was created.

I agree as well about the keyboard shortcuts, made life so much easier with a hand on the keyboard and the other on the mouse or pen. When I first put the beta up I used my old alpha settings which mapped the keyboard to the same as 2.79. And am slowly changing them over to the new ones. The tab key for pie menus I am loving atm as it helps the work flow a lot.

I love alot of things about 2.8. Gonna be a long slog 'til June, though, and there are many things I still like better in 2.79. 2d workflow looks great, but it has some intuition gaps. I miss text labels rather than icons too. Never have to wait for a tool tip to find out what they do. Haven't really messed with EEVIE yet. Got AMD radeon Prorender in 2.79. Does a passable job of RT even on this mid range machine. Switching lmb and rmb didn't do me any favors either.( can only sort of change it back)
