THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Poser hair looks like a wood carving

shutterb ( ) posted Thu, 28 June 2001 at 10:42 AM · edited Fri, 02 August 2024 at 3:08 AM

I can import my Poser characters into Bryce just fine. I can get the eyes correct and the eyelashes, but all the hair I bring along with the figure looks just like a wood carving instead of hair. If I render the same hair in Poser it look pretty much like hair. What am I doing wrong? Is there a tutorial anyone knows about? Thanks This is my first time to post a question, but I have gotten a lot of help from reading other members questions.

Without seeing an image, I would guess that the transparency map isn't coming across - it has to be manually applied. Take a look at the various Poser --> Bryce tutorials on this site as I'm pretty sure one of them has step by step instructions on what to do. Does that help? Tom D

Most of the time only Transmapped hair has any kind of realism in Bryce. In Bryce4 you have to bring the Transmap in manually after you figure is in. Be careful though some hair models (ie: hmannn's Total Hair)are very complex in their "mesh names" so make sure you know where all the transmaps go if there is more than one. Kozaboru's hairs come out beautiful in Bryce. (Rob)

Thanks, That really does help. That will give me a place to start. Thanks about the warning about total hair, I use it all the time and it seems like I need to learn a little more before I try that one. I love Kozaboru's hair and will start with that. The Wonder Wedge is my favorite hair and the one that I am having the most trouble with. I have attached a typical bad image from Bryce. Everything else looks OK

That is the missing transmap ... In a seperate chanel load the map and then hit "blend transparancy" in the the thing .. you actually don't need to turn the transparancy up any percentage. You just need to make sure it is affecting the right channel.

I figured it out!!!!! I was not putting the mark in the bottom transparency. That made it work just fine. I reduced the ambiance and diffusion from 100 to about 75 and it worked. If it ever finishes rendering, I'll post the finished shot. Thanks everybody for the help. It is all starting to make more sense. It is taking so long to render this small image it is unbelievable. I am excited about Bryce 5 being able to use the shared resources of network computers. I have 7 computers (2 Macs 7 Pc) and will be able to set up all my renders and let the 7 computers do the work together at night. Sounds like it is going to be pretty cool. Well thanks again.

I would recommend not setting your ambience any higher than 18 - 22...in darker renders it will look like it is glowing when you set it higher than that.

Looks really good Shutter. There does seem to be two points of light in the "part" area of her hair....specularity too high? Or too much reflectivity maybe? Great start thought. (Rob) P.S. If either is the case I might suggest a specularity no higher than 30 to 35 unless you lights are very close to her then less Spec. Reflectivity either don't use or use very low setting like 1.6 to 3.

Thanks again. The observations are very helpful I really apreciate it. I was just so excited that the hair looked like hair that I stopped looking for anything else. I will start to look at it more tonight and your suggestions will give me a place to start. Thanks shutterb
