THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Rhino 2 Byrce 3

Hi, I'm pretty new to modeling and 3d graphics... and mainly I just work on space ships - because I'm designing a story universe for a book I'm writing. Now... I do my modeling in Rhino Demo, and I have managed to finish most of them... but how can I important Rhinoceroes models into Byrce. I know there is a OBJ export in Rhino - however the import of them files within Bryce doesn't seem to work. There is the Autocad DFX(?) format, but Rhino makes a LOT of mesh for that, and it takes MONTHS to try and navigate that amount of mesh in Byrce (I have a p233mmx with 96megs of memory) Since I only wanna use Byrce for the rendering, can anyone help me importanting Rhino stuff into Bryce? thanks Tracy-Ann

Do you want me to email you the Intro to Rhino tutorial?..It's in .pdf format for Acrobat veiwing. Lemme know.

If this is the 3meg file I have it... (training number 1) which goes through all the options - however, I can't find anything in that, that tells me anything about exporting from Rhino to Byrce3D... Bryce 3d allows .Obj important, however that keeps locking and giving me read errors from the wavefront OBJ format. Does Bryce have a import for any NURBS format? thanks

Quikp51 ( ) posted Sat, 11 December 1999 at 2:43 AM

No Bryce won't import NURBS outright. The only thing I have found to be effective is Rhino exporting to .obj . Bryce has had no problems opening this type of file export with me. I don't know why it would give you an error though , perhaps because Rhino is a demo? My pic in the Byrce gallery of Episode I used a Rhino NURB , the Royal starship , exported as a .dxf . I lowered the poly count so it wouldn't take so long to render and such. Oh and before I forget it is the same 3.64meg file. I'll give you more info when I recover my manual.

Okay - how about this... If I use Boolean difference in a model, why does it disappear in .obj when importing that into Bryce3D? Also - where is this gallery with your stuff - since it appears we both like doing ships :) How many poly counts do you need? tracy-ann :)

Quikp51 ( ) posted Sat, 11 December 1999 at 3:19 PM

The boolean problem is something I don't know , maybe you need to make it hidden or somethng. I'll ty it and maybe let you know if my results differ. The gallery is on the link to the right in CG gallery just put in a search for Quikp51. As for the poly count make it whatever you want it to be. I have a P2 400 with 256mb ram so high poly counts don't really affect me. Your sys has less prcessing and less memory than mine so play it by ear I guess. Lemme know if you have any more questions cuz I'm constantly fooling with Rhino trying different ship designs.

Oh here are some spaceship links if you haven't checked 'em out yet ; http://members.xoom.com/_XOOM/duo3/fsf3d1.htm (thers a spaceport link) , http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Nebula/1372/ , http://www.burninghamstudios.com/Models.html , http://www.inspired-designs.net/%7Ebex/www/main.html, http://www.swma.net/ , http://www.theforce.net/scifi3d/starwars/sw.html , http://www.robotfarm.de/robotfarm.html. Thanks for the urls information my friend. They help a lot... Even looking at models that have been made before had help a lot in creating you own models also. You said you had a picture called "the Royal starship" However when I searched under you handle I only found four starwars pictures (all very well done btw) but not this picture. This picture interests me because you stated you did it the way I'm trying (modeling in Rhino, and rendering in Bryce) so if you still have that picture, please can I see it? I have been playing with the mesh for DFX, which does appear to work now that I decrease the amount of mesh/line sizes. However, OBJ files still do not work - mainly it loads the OBJ file (exported from Rhino) into Bryce, but only 2 objects, and 1 line is found in the file... Can't understand WHY this is happening however. Maybe I'm using a incorrect export setting? As a matter of interest - can you use Bryce 2 and 3 materials in bryce 4?? tracy :)

No in the Annie pic the royal starship is a nurb by me. It basically gives the shape of the ship without having a port side. From the top it looks like a funky reverse P . I lost all that data though in a crash which sucks because I lost Qui-Gon. I am though working on organic ships of designs I made years ago and Ill up you the pics when I finalize all the stinkin' antenna. Think humongous and insect like , but without legs or wings.

Well I would show you some of mine - however, - I'm majorly stuck on how to make Textures work correctly in Bryce, and how to make your own custom textures... Do you know any locations where I can find information about how to make Custom textures, and how to get texturing in Bryce to work... ie, with 3dstudio max (which I have played with 2.5) you can choose what kinda shape the texture is fitting (ie, sqaure, UV, etc etc ) ... but I can't find anything like that in Bryce3 (or 4)

TracyAnn Export out of Rhino3D as an obj. Select the smallest polycount that will accurately represent your mesh. Open the OBJ in UVMapper by Steve Cox. Save model out of UVMapper. Import this new OBJ into Bryce. UVMapper "fixes" something Bryce does not like. I have 8 save left in the Rhino demo ;-) smerc

Smerc - I will get that a shot... I'll look for the UVmapper program :)

You know, I do all my models in rhino and I export them all as .3ds files, and havent ever had a problem with importing them into Bryce. Shoot, Ive got over 200 models for download on my site(including ships) and every one of them was rendered in Bryce. Ive also got a tutorial on my site(From Poser2Bryce) that explains how to add textures to your models in Bryce as well as adding new material presets(Steps 3 & 4)and yes, you can use Bryce 3 materials in Bryce 4, as for Bryce 2 materials..Im not sure of. FastTraxx Chemical Studios

TracyAnn ( ) posted Mon, 13 December 1999 at 6:46 PM

Yes you can use Bryce 2 Materials in Bryce 4.... in fact Bryce 4 is on my "To buy" list - I bought Bryce 2 a while back, and used that for.... oh a month before I went onto something else ^^ But I'm happy to say, everything on the Bryce 2 CD works in Bryce3... models, lighting, textures...e tc etc etc... However, I suppose when I finally buy full version of Bryce 4 it will have all of them in Bryce 4 format anyway and more ^^ FastTraxx - you made all them models in Rhino... impressive ^^.... however, what I was looking to do was import the NURBS from Rhino - meaning cutting down on the mesh amount. I have a model which is damn complexed - bery easy to make in Rhino, however when I important it to Bryce it is like using a 286 all over again ^^ ... I'm trying to get some other things working, someone said 3dmax imports NURBS, and in all honestly - I don't understand why Bryce doesn't - especially since it has Boolain functions in it. (sigh)
