Subject: Revisits, alternate takes, new ones...and some thoughts...

doruksal ( ) posted Tue, 09 April 2002 at 4:24 PM · edited Sun, 18 August 2024 at 4:40 AM

Here is a parade of some images from my archive, images which I think that have some sense of 'leading lines'...
...Rather solid lines though, unlike the rather 'virtual' ones which were beautifuly demonstrated by Alpha in his 'bird feeding street bum' photo.

Some (maybe most) of you would recognize the first three images, while the last two will be new postings...

Here they come, after this...

One of my first posts to the Photography Gallery after becoming a member to Render... Maybe too many lines here, but I think they all converge at the lower focal point in the photo... Yet, the subject here seem to be more about the lines themselves, though the lines provide quite a bit of movement to the eyes around the image...

Another one from my earlier posts to Photo Gallery... Again many lines (curves) here, and I think they converge more successfuly to a certain focal point. This is the b/w version of the original post.

This is a recent post... I've always thought that the glittering broken border of the window is like a 'crasher' that approaches from the upper left corner of the pic and leaves its bright trace, and crashes then to create the 'blast' where the particles are spread sort of radially. Yet, there are also some hard, black and oblique lines here which may take the eyes away from the focal point (the blast), and out of the picture. Still, IMHO, those lines are more to frame, than to distract...

This is a newly scanned image from a 9x13 print of a photo that was shot on color negative film. Dates back from 1993. The sky reveals some vertical linings that are not our concern for 'leading lines', as you may guess... :) These lines lead to my lovely (!!) scanner, and its dirty-on-the-inner-side glass..! :-( So, where does the 'S' curve, which is our primary concern, leads the eye: over the hills and far away..? :-)

if ya can only enter one, I say the broken window is keen man.

The last one for tonight... It's scanned from a 18x24 cm print of a shot on b/w negative film, and dates back from 1995 or 1996. The film was Ilford HP5+; the paper was Ilfobrom Grade-3... ...I do not remember whether I push processed the film, perhaps not. The camera was Canon AE-1 mounted with a 50 mm lens. Location was the middle of the city at night, in front of the shop display of a luxurious clothing company. An available light shot through the display window. It was a great fun, and also much excitement as this was one of my first shots that was commenced among the very public...

Slynky, thanx for the immediate reply, but these are very old images, not shot recently (in April)... ...So, these are just to share.

I've always loved that stairway shot. Just go back and re-shoot for the contest! That would be legal, wouldn't it?

bsteph2069 ( ) posted Tue, 09 April 2002 at 7:12 PM

Seems legal to me. And what a nice model she is. I agree with Slink but I love the fence, which is rather sad I suppose. Let me explain. I think I ocasionally run into this problem. A photo addresses the subject better but is less visually pleasing. What to do. To me esthetically the glass really does not interest me much. HOWEVER I think IT IS the best entry for leading lines. Which brings me to the point. If I had to vote between all of the pictures you have posted the glass would win. Hmmm such a tragidy because I really like the stairs and the fence best. Does anyone else feel this? Bsteph

(all wonderful images doruk!) bsteph, i know what u mean... but imo the glass is it only at first sight. lines pointing to a hole... mh, well... i would take the fence for best. tell u: even if the sky is only about the top sixth of the pic, the fence leads ur looks to it. und at last the empty sky is (also a bit due to its brightness, ok...) the end point of ur looks. u may notice that u hardly can concentrate on the flowers down there in the foreground. that would not happen if the fence wasn*t there, imo. and for the stairs i'm with u anyway... wonderful!

gunsan ( ) posted Tue, 09 April 2002 at 11:00 PM

Love the stairs best I think, but the fence is sooo beautiful , and the window... yes. But please tell me, what is that first image, I scratch my head but it does not react.

A beautiful collection of images....I adore the image of the fence and grass...definitely my favorite, I also like very much your photograph of the window display model...wonderful grain in that and beautiful tones.

Some really beautiful images here Doruk, the first is fascinating because of the lines but they lead the eye in so many directions there doesn't seem to be one focal point. My eye keeps wanting to follow the lines in & out of the image which is it's strength I think but not one for leading lines. The stairs again have beautiful lines, love those curves but not really leading to anything. I think the glass is a really strong contender, great dramatic lines all leading to one point. The fence image is stunning, very evocative & this is an idea I'm not sure of, the focal point seems to be more of a feeling the image creates rather than a visual focal point. I love it but don't know how that fits with the contest....... any answers to that Alpha????? Really like the last one, strong, interesting & original. Well, thats my thoughts anyway!

Wonderful images Doruk! The fence is a beautiful photo and it captures my imagination so much...The stairs really are fantastic, as is the glass. The first image is very interesting, and something I would have photographed too, but confuses my eye with all the lines...and the shop window dummy pic is just sublime, but I'm trying hard to see where a focus of the lines in hat picture lead... Thanks for sharing. :-)>

...but better late than none... :) Dear Gunsan, the image in the first pic shows the metal frames, bars and spikes of the windows which surround the borders of a terrace high up on a tower, the tower being the part of a large shopping mall. Up to the level of the terrace, the tower has no floors; above the terrace is another round floor that is occupied by a large restaurant and a bar. Why so much metal spikes..? Because before them, there happened to be some (2 or 3) suicide attempts, and one unfortunate commit... ...And, the management took care of it..!! Let me post another work, another revisited one, to show you a little more detail...

doruksal ( ) posted Fri, 12 April 2002 at 4:01 PM

file_4008.jpg

Well, here is the detail, the reflections of some people taking a walk around the terrace, and seeing the city from above, and pointing to each other with excitement, "Oh, here is this, there is that, and over there is our house...". So, what a detail, huh..?!! :-P These two images are obviously printed from the same negative with slightly different exposure times... ...And, they are my very first experiences of printing in a darkroom (..sweet sweet memories...in 1996). I had not yet started to shoot b/w negatives by then, so I had to use one of the color negatives that also included the first photo in this thread.

doruksal ( ) posted Fri, 12 April 2002 at 4:06 PM

Dear everyone who was interested in this thread and replied, commented, and shared thoughts... ...Thanx for all this..! :) This 'leading lines' concept seems to be one that is open to various interpretations, and also seems that this challenge will be a very productive one... Congrats to everyone even from now... :)
