I am trying to scan in a magazine image I found to use in a texture but I keep getting funky lines in it no matter the dpi I use. I am not a big scanner person so does anyone know why this happens? Thanks for anyand all help :)

Depending on the scanner and scanner software there might be an option to turn them off. I'm not sure (as my scanner can't do it) but try looking for something like scanlines or moire. If the scanner/software hasn't got that option, try rotating the magazine just a few degrees, that might also do the trick, it's due to the fact that magazines usually are rasterized and that can indeed create funky lines in a scan. Hope it helps :o)

You just can't put the words "Poserites" and "happy" in the same sentence - didn't you know that? LaurieA

As a print designer who uses a scanner all the time - I think I know what you're problem is. Stuff that is printed in magazines (or anywhere for that matter) are printed with a screen. When a scanner scans something it scans with a screen. The 2 screens together create the moire pattern you're seeing. To get around it you need to use a 'descreen' (there should be a couple of options depending on your scanning software - 72/85, 133, 150 etc - try 133lpi). This should help. If you still get a slight pattern and are using Photoshop, then use the despeckle filter. This should help. Any more questions just ask. Guarie

Oh yes, descreen, that's the word G Anyway not all scanners has a descreen option, none of the 3 I've had so far has the option and one of them is a fairly high end scanner :o) So if there's no descreen option, a slight rotation usually helps, possibly followed by some Photoshop postwork.

descreening & blurring can help a little. another option is to scan a larger image then you intend to use, then once it's scanned reduce the resolution a bit.

Might I suggest you get a USB Hub? I have one which plugs into a single USB port, and is capable of supporting up to 6 USB devices. They are really quite inexpensive. It would save you the pain of swapping out USB devices :)
