Subject: Glowing Nostrils - what are they?

I seem to have missed this. What are glowing nostrils? Why are they such a problem?

It's a limitation of shadow mapping, particularly with certain types of geometry. The render engine fails to place shadows where it should, such as the nostrils or the mouth interior.

PheonixRising has experimented with morphing the nostril geometry to "trap the light" (see this thread), Traveler has some no-glow nostril props at Morph World 3.0 for the Millennium figures.

Why is it such a problem? Unless you can breathe fire, it doesn't look natural.

Actually, LD, Anton figured it out, and it's not a problem with the rendering engine, it's a problem with the way every character has been built for Poser... Basically, the meshes have all made the nostrils out to be basically cylinders, but a real nostril doesn't do that. If you put your finger in your nose... heehee... tutorials that involve nosepicking are always fun... You'll find that there are ridges around the bottom of the nostril on the inside which create the proper shadowing. As I understand things, Vicky 3 will not have glowing nostrils, as Anton has redesigned her schnoz to accomodate. I guess this only goes to show that of the many things modelers and poser users may be called, we'll never be called nosepickers, otherwise we'd have figured it out long before now, eh? Great work on that, Anton! Paul

Duh! PhoenixRising IS Anton... Boy do I feel like a dork. ;)

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Thu, 12 September 2002 at 5:20 AM

Or rather, like a Don. :) I was going to add Anton's name in parentheses in my post, but I've never gotten around to memorizing how "Kisiel" is spelled, and I didn't feel like looking it up to confirm the spelling. Sorry about that.

I suppose it`s worth mentioning Poser characters are one of the few that get their noses picked for them.

something you really don't want to see when looking a dragon in the eye ;)

I wonder what Little dragon uses - Asbestos cotton buds ?
