Subject: Turbo Squid? What's everyone's take on this 'service'?

Just asking. I see that they have some really ordinary models for extraordinary prices. I mean, $60 for a tokkuri and sakazuki that I've already modeled myself in a couple days (and mine has both a parametric form and polygonal form with remapped textures, texture template, and a default texture - what's that, like, $200? ;0) )? On the other hand, there are some really nice models which merit their cost. The agreement is 50/50 between TS and the seller. No wonder the prices are so extravagant! BeatYourSoul

I looked at turbosquid when I was wanting to buy a model ragtop car for a web site logo some time back. Duddly's stang was cheaper so I bought that through DAZ and he even made a top just for the project (of course, its available for all). So, all I can say is if I really need something and that's the only place to get it, so be it. But if I can find more cost effective ways and toss a buck or two towards this community, I will. Ok, there's other sources for models, both commercial and non commercial freebies. Do the google thing. IM me if you want some links. Also, this site has over 1200 models availabe on CD. They are mostly in .fac format which can be opened in Amorphium and converted to .obj. http://www.3dny.org/fmd/ I haven't bought it yet, but its on my list. Check out the online catelogue.

First time I have visited the site. You are right. Some of that stuff is really priced high but there are items I bought at Rosity that are there and they are the same prices. I wonder how they do price it.

I have my entire catalog on Turbo Squid, They sell an average of 3 files a month. The 50/50 commission is similar to other brokering services including Renderosity.philc_agatha_white_on_black.jpg

As I've posted numerous times (both here and in the OT Forum), Turbo Squid allows the sale of copyrighted items. They sell Star Trek ships, Star Wars characters, etc. They are a lawsuit waiting to happen. I would stay as far away from them as possible.

Hey PhilC! Saw your items there. High quality at affordable prices as usual! Sorry if I sprayed my disappointment too widely. Just seems that some stuff, mainly ~not~ Poser items, are pricey even for simplistic objects. Hint and possible start of flame-war: people who use 3DSMax seem to think that their models are worth much more than anyone elses no matter how crappy. ;)

Ahh yes the $99 basket ball.

I met a man in the market selling tomatoes. They looked good so I asked how much they were. "$1000 each", he replied. I told him that I doubted if he would sell many at that price. "No", he replied, "I only want to sell one!"

There are commercial situations where having just the right model is worth the price. Two different ways of recouping the investment required to make a decent model: * sell lots cheaply. * sell a few expensively. PhilC made the point more entertainingly than I am. I just wanted to say that "business is business", and there's no point in moaning if some model makers choose a business model you don't like. Just don't buy from them ;) Meanwhile, count me in as one of those who is working hard trying to find ways to increase the size of the low-cost 3D market, so that we can all have more goodies at lower cost :) -- ToolmakerSteve

I never plan on buying from TurboSquid. However... If I am a professional animation house doing a commercial for a tight deadline and I am paying my modelers $50-75/hour, $500 for a high-rez motorcyclestarts to look appealing. I don't think they are targeting the hoby market.

What I heard was that they have guys renaming and selling items they downloaded from Freestuff here (and elsewhere), and that they also have dudes renaming and selling figures exported from Poser, as well as other copyright violations. Maybe that was in the past and they quit doing that, but I haven't checked lately.

From what i can tell its an unregulated free for all with NO verifcation of ownership of the items put up for sale they sell single BVH files for $200.!!!! when there are free BVH archives available all over the net and reasonably priced and POSER ready BVH packs in the makerketplace here.

We do VERY well on Turbo Squid but this is mostly due to our 3ds and max sales. You have to sell a whole lot of Poser models to make a living from model sales alone.... Unless of course, you're DAZ. Daz has (for the most part) been devoted primarily to creating content for Poser up until now. But wait a minute... is "devoted" the wrong word? :/ What's this I hear about DAZ creating their own program? Is this something to replace Curious Labs Poser program? Someone please refer me to a thread or briefly catch me up about this, would ya'?! I'd appreciate it.
