Description

A bit more to the right we can see the glacier tongue (end) of a side glacier, the Mittelaletschgletscher (the Middle Aletsch Glacier), from where the melting water runs down to the Grosse Aletschgletscher. Notice the retreat of both glaciers, once connected and now you see the side moraine high above the glaciers (the sharp separation-line between grass and rocks). Another impressive shot and not an easy terrain to walk on. Looks like the clouds are moving over head on you. Excellent shot. Aloha

The shadows really does it in this one. It still looks surreal to me as if it was a Terragen after all. Beautiful work JC. Have a wonderful humpday. #:O)

JC, I see the latteral moraine starting at the top of the picture and swooping off to the left. But grass? Is there grass on those bare rock ledges above the moraine? To answer PeeWee, the angle of repose in loosened rock is usually about 30 degrees. Steeper than that in loose stuff, a slope becomes unstable and subject to slump or landslide. Less than 30 degrees, weathering (disaggregation) of the material is at play. But when you throw in moving ice, all bets are off. -- Dick

It makes me feel dizzy just looking at the photgraph. In reality, it must be terrifyingly steep. You have a splendid angle here. Very interesting contrast between the glacial ice and the brown hillside.

To play where the glaciers are blue is a rare treat. Looking into the eye of the glacier more than one lost climber or flyer has been found intact.
