Description

This White Rhino (Ceratotherium simum) is one of the giant bulls roaming where I live. The word "white" for Rhino is actually not correct but rather "wide" because its real name was from the Dutch "wijd bek renoster", i.e. "wide mouthed rhinoceros". You can clearly see its square lip/mouth surface which enables it to graze instead browsing leaves like its cousin, the Black Rhino.
This picture was taken on the farm Buisfontein and the town I live in can be seen to the left and some distance past the foot of the hill - small town, you have to look close, lol.

Oh my goodness...now this is an animal I never knew existed! What an odd looking creature! Guessing this could be a nasty adversary if he decided he wanted to chase you so sure hope you used a telephoto on this one, LOL! I so love these posts...every one is a learning experience! Very cool capture, Piet! I have to guess one doesn't drive too fast at night in these areas....can you imagine seeing this standing in the middle of the road on a dark night 20 feet from your headlights? Eeeeeek!

Stunning Take!!! Love Rhino's. More info Piet: White Rhino has a hump that the Black Rhino don't have. Their height up to 1,8m, where the Black Rhino's height is 1,5m. White Rhino's has a bigger head than Black Rhino's. Sorry, but some people don't know the difference between both! :-)
