Description

The Boer community in South Africa proudly commemorated the 150th birthday of the "Vierkleur" (quad colored) flag on Saturday. The colors of Dutch heritage (orange, white & blue) still evident in the red, white and blue. Gun salutes were fired and as the smoke cleared the flag was hailed. Characteristically a lot of fun was had and people wore traditional attire and a number brought along their horses and joined in  a parade.
The young ladies had me mighty proud but they also served as a stark reminder of the times they and the moms had to bear the brunt of wars in the past. I hope you enjoy a glimpse of something unique South African.

Oranje Blanje Blue !! Collors of the Dutch Republic and the VOC. Great to remember it like this. We now have the Red White Blue too (since 1936), we add the Orange when we celebrate the Monarchy ! Thanks for this photo.. impressive

Nice to know that we have vexillologists at RR!!! LOL Interesting presentation of old and new like Janalene mentioned. If you look at SA's previous flag, there was a small 4-coloured flag too. Here is a link and some history about the previous South African flag ... http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/za_old.html. Nice capture Piet! Thanks for sharing.

This must have been one of those moments when the heart wells with pride and the spirit soars. I love the selective coloring and the sepia effect. You will eventually cause me to go find a book on more of your history and culture there. I am really quite ignorant of either. Very rich photo.

Good idea the sepia tones for this one, seems a historical shot. I love the flag in this way, it seems in 3D. An interesting commemoration. Have a nice evening my friend. Hugs

Fabulous presentation of days gone by. Although you took it last weekend, it reminds me of the fifties for some reason. Great tone and I like the selective coloring. Neat capture for sure, and thanks for the info that went along with it!!!

Like the way you used selective colors to celebrate your culture. You know, Piet, change the flag and this could be Texas!
