Description

This is Tram number 60 in the fleet at Crich. Johannesburg 60, with its bilingual signs in English and Afrikaans, was one of many originally built in this country for export to all corners of the British Empire. If you look to the top of the picture you can see where the power comes from. This jumble of wires, once described as 'a mad woman's knitting' has also been rescued from all over the country. Look down at the bottom and you see the track. A shiny lacework of track runs through the museum, this as also come from many sources, including, Douglas(I of M) Glasgow, Sheffield, Newcastle, Darlington, Manchester, Salford, Leeds, Liverpool, Edinburgh, and Birmingham, to mention a few. The track is laid to the standard gauge of 4'81/2"(1453mm) but some systems had a narrower or broader gauge. Thanks for stopping by for a look and for any comments you care to make. May the sun shine down on you where ever you are.

Great! I used to love riding on the London Trams - especially on the upper deck (also known as "outside"). But the powers that be took them away in the fifties and left us with diesel buses running on imported fuel ...

Another great shot at Crich Jeff, the red of the Tram stands out I hadn't realised how much a jumbled network of power lines there were. Its excellent viewed large, you can see the curved staircase very clearly. Did we ride this one when we went over to the Sculpture trail ?

Now this brings back memories for me...Getting on the train at Manchester to Sheffield, catching the tram outside the station to go to my grandparents for the weekend. I loved the tram-cars. What fascinated me was that the driver just got up and walked to the other end of the tram to go back the way he came because the tram couldnt turn around being on tracks :-) Oh dear me!!! I do miss England so much!!!>sigh< Hugs

Wow... the nicely adorned streetlamps, the wirework, the unique double decker tram, the juxtaposition of stone and metal structures, of plants and rocky walls... of industrial artifacts, tradition and nature... it all gives me the same sense of lingering magic I get from some of the animated works of Hayao Miyazaki.
