Description
There are two varieties, the Painted Lady and the American Painted Lady, both common in this area. I was thinking this was the American Painted Lady, but based on "Leeco"'s post yesterday and some googling, I think this might be the Painted Lady instead.

We get Painted Ladies in the southern UK, but they are only migrant summer visitors from the European mainland. They are larger than most of our native species, except the Purple Emperor - that isn't seen often as it lives in the treetops of our woodlands

Great focus and detail. I saw 4 of these emerge from their chrysalis about 2 weeks ago and let them go in the yard. Maybe they will come back for a photo. ;-)
