Hiboux: One of my four rescued friends
"If you talk to the animals they will talk with you and you will know each other.
If you do not talk to them you will not know them, and what you do not know you will fear. Â What one fears one destroys."
--Chief Dan George (1899 - 1981)
The avatar I use is a photo of a kitten who adopted me last fall. She came to my door one night, hungry and cold and in need of shelter. I had already adopted a rescued dog and 2 fostered cats (I have a friend who works in animal rescue), but another friend told me that being chosen by a cat was a special thing, so, here she is in her new home. I called her Hiboux (French for owl for those who don't already know), since she reminded me of a snowy owl tapping on my door.
Sorry I need a new digital camera. The one used for this photo was one of the first ones ever made that utilizes a floppy disc. I am attached to it, but thought it was more important to show off my kitty here since this is merely my "home" page and not a display of my digital art. I'll update it as soon as I can.
I live in the US Midwest, have a degree in landscape design, compete nationally (only in the US so far)Â in dancesport, and choreographed contemporary dance for over a decade. I've been writing since childhood--mainly for my own amusement. A few of my poems have been published in obscure places and I used to write many interviews which were published online for years. None of my novels have met the public eye yet and that's OK because for me "the joy is in the journey." Â
I'm hooked on creating digital art. I stumbled upon it when I worked online for 11 years as a content editor and became intrigued watching the medium grow. 3D art feels like a good niche for me combining movement, landscape, my love of nature, history, art, technology, myth and storytelling . . .  I love to experiment with software and hope to continue to grow as an artist. I'm in awe of many of the beautiful works shared on this site. I've also begun a blog here called "A Novelist's Adventures in Digital Art" where I list useful sites and tools I find along the way:

I consider myself a beginner at digital art. We all have to start somewhere. I try to encourage other creatives on all skill levels as often as I have time. I learn a lot from the artists I favorite here and even from private emails with tips if you feel so inclined. I dont allow ratings in my gallery anymore, because I don't believe in "grading" art--it doesn't fit into my personal philosophy. That said, I do often admire many of the talented professional artists and am happy when they are showcased on the art charts here and feel the rating system--though it has flaws--is important to honor excellence.  I do appreciate any comments and appreciate constructive criticism and suggestions.

Wonderful composition with a wonderful message, Cathy. Lovely scenario, with a nice artistic touch. Peter is a fantastic artist, friend and personality.. The best there is. He is a very good and helpful friend of mine too. And your thoughts about friendship is more than true. When it comes to MAC.. E-brink is your best friend too.#;o)

You're writing I saw myself in your words and what you say. I too feel that way myself. You're work is truly amazing, professionally done, even though you don't feel it is. I too feel intimidated by other, but too, they're inspirational as well.

Wonderful image. It really captures the essence of Fall. E-Brink is a great guy and artist, I'm sure he will be tickled by this.

I understand feeling intimidated by other people's work - we all do. But here is what I know. Your work may not be techically perfect, it may not be what you wanted it to be, but there is energy in every single one of your picture, there are feelings, and there is soul. That, for me, is the definition of good art. I like the mood you created in the above picture, I think you did capture the spirit of Fall quite well. Thank you for sharing this with us.

Thank you, Kitzie21. I appreciate it. If I waited to be technically perfect nothing would get posted in my gallery at all at this stage. LOL. I am just a beginner here on a journey to test my skills. The one lesson I've learned in life is that we don't know what's around the corner. So, I try to express grattitude when the moment is right. Otherwise, it might never happen at all or be too late. Thanks again, everyone, for commenting here and even visiting. It keeps me motivated to learn and keep trying and in the end, that's what it's all about for me. That and doing the same for others: commenting, viewing, and encouraging whenever I have time (or a working computer--whichever comes first these days).

So sweet.

Cathy this is a wonderful dedi to Peter and I know he will enjoy it so much. Your work is wonderful and there is no need to feel worried about the work of others but instead focus on your ideas because they are superb

Congrats on your almost one year :: I love the tranquility of this scene even as it foreshadows the coming seasons. Your attention to detail is wonderful. I especially love the easel.

Well I love your art! So there!! ;)) Superb autumn image! Wonderful composition!

What you created here is difficult - an image that actually means something and tells a little autumn story. Not just to me, but to most perceptual onlookers. You did it without the need for characters too, which is extra hard - indicating their presence with the steaming cups of tea is a wonderful, simplifying concept that makes this image live. Well done, Cathy... and thank you.

Great concept very well executed! Excellent render too... well done!!

I can sense what you meant in your comment above, trying to define what friendship is or should be , and the difficulty of having true and lasting friends. Your wonderful composition are superbly echoing your thoughts, I would even dare say it must be a nice thing and a privilege to rank among your friends :-). I quite agree with you on what you've said about Peter(e-brink)...It's a superb dedi to friendship you've done here,Cathy!

BEAUTIFUL WORK & LOVELY TRIBUTE TO A GREAT ARTIST !!!!! LOVE IT :)
bogart137
I think the most important achievement of this image is the fact that there are no visible (human) characters; and that anyhow one can feel their presence. Like a lot the concept of telling a story throughout non-animated (¿?) objects. It´s very rare to see and is also very inspiring. The whole image, as it is, works perfectly well. Now, and this is a very personal appreciation, I feel the lack of shadows. Why? Because as far as I can see this is a "mood" kind of image, an image creating a story throughout the way elements are disposed within a very particular atmosphere. To make it short, I think shadows would have helped viewers to a better synchronization with the time and the mood of the scene. I completely agree with you regarding artist e-brink. And also agree with kitzie21 when saying that what counts are the feelings you put in all your works. Thanks for sharing your soul with all of us.

A beautiful dedication, well done!!

This illustration is so moving. A beautiful vision of friendship when your best friends are far away from you but always in your heart. You're a great artist Cathy. I can see it in your work. Don't be afraid to show us who you are because we can see in your Art (heart) that you are a wonderful person and a talented and creative artist ! Big Hugs !!

Thanks everybody. As for the lack of shadows, Bogart137, thank you. I agree. I don't know what happened. I put all the shadow maps on as usual, but not only was the final render too dark on the PC, there were no shadows when I rendered it on my Mac. Lars gave me a few pointers that I'll try. It was a 24 hour render due to the shadow maps I did turn on, so, fixing it may take a while. In any case, I will keep learning about lighting--it's my biggest challenge in Daz. I bought a good book on digital lighting which I'm reading, so, maybe I'll understand it eventually.

Well done, in spite of lack of shadows. There are some tuts here about shadow creation if your 3D app does not do that. So I will encourage you to continue because your scene is original and very interesting; this is very promising! I agree that Peter e-brink is both a fantastic artist and a very good, kind and honest man (he is a friend of me too). I'm sure that after some time you shall LOVE your Mac, but true it's quite another platform!

This is fantastic!!! Love your scene work!

nice mood.

shadows can be nasty.. not only in the SF series Babylon 5. They sometimes stay away in Poser too.. and than they come but stop half way the image.. where they should go on ha ha always a grrr moment still the image is good and the text about friendship very true. Came here after I saw E-brinks words.. and now i see yours i think you two have both found a real friend... you two :D
three_grrr
Right. There are no shadows, but that makes this image about friendship perfect, don't you think? There is work on the table, two steaming cups of tea (or coffee if you prefer), two chairs, you know the friends have just stepped out of the scene for a moment. And as in any good friendship, there are no shadows. This is beautiful Cathy, as is the dedi. ebrink is one fabulous artist, and I'm just lately getting familiar with his astounding work, yet he seems to be so generous with his thoughts and his time. A marvelous work to dedicate to a friend!
