Description

The bark of a Madrona at MooseRidge Gardens. That place was a total photographer's paradise! For those of you in California saying, "No no, it's MADRONE," you are partly correct. According to the Sunset Western Garden Book, south of the Siskiyous it IS Madrone. North of the Siskiyous it's Madrona. Go figure. Of course with all the specimen trees at MooseRidge, this is probably something totally exotic and special. But I'd bet my bottom dollar it's SOME sort of Arbutus!

I'd know that skin anywhere! You are quite right about Arbutus, and I'm guessing the extra colours may be from both climate and weathering on the bare wood..........Gorgeous shot!

That's a very cool capture. You can see where the bark (skin?) peeled away on the right. Dana

See now, this is what happens when you do it right. At first it's nothing special. It is a tree, isn't it? Or a painted column with peeling paint. No, no it's a tree. Oh but look at the stains/burns/textures! And the cracks. And the color variations. And then you enlarge it and, at the juncture of the two cracks on the left, near the bottom, is a bit of a face. And as your eye heads straight up from there, just before you get to the lightest spot on the bark, another, stronger, face appears. And now you are sitting there and staring in wonder at a simple image that started out as 'nothing special'.

I love Madronas, as you call them up there (in my neck of the woods, they are just plain madrone--go figure!!)--but no matter what you call them, they are beautiful. I'd love to wander around this place some day!!
