Description

Mount Teide (Pico del Teide) in Tenerife, is the highest elevation in Spain and the islands of the Atlantic, and the third largest volcano in the world from its base. It's designated as a Decade Volcano, because of its history of destructive eruptions and its proximity to several large towns. The most dominant plant species in the apparently barren landscape of the Teide National Park are the Teide white broom (Spartocytisus supranubius), which has a white and pink flower; the Canary Island wallflower (Erysimum scoparium), which has white and violet flowers. Moreover there are at least 70 species of insects typical of this area. Since Joanna (Joyphoto) made a remark about a white halo more than once, I'd like to make you known that it's intended and looked for. Of course, one is free to loathe it, it' a matter of taste. However, I chose to leave the white halo on the right side of the mountain, and to hide it on the left side. All considered I still prefer the halo. Anyway state your opinion freely: left or right? (it isn't a political poll). Thanks for your kind comments.

The postwork colour of the volcano is really striking - and that is what gives this image a mysterious feel and a bit too close for comfort ;-) BB

Beautiful image! Wonderful colors and textures! I love your postwork! It brings out the great diversity of shapes, colors, and textures. While the mountain is quite beautiful, it is this rich carpet of diversity in the foreground that grabs my attention. Gorgeous and rich image! Great information too!

When I was a child, I had a love of volcanoes...but thankfully, I never lived close to one. I still have an abiding interest in these geological creatures and I love the treatment you gave to this one. You caught its scale perfectly, and I love the nicely saturated colors; this photo has a particular warmth that I like a lot and a particular sense of "bigness." I always learn so much when I read your text accompaniments too, and that's never a bad thing. As for halos, I'm actually a bit neutral on the topic, but I do have to say that I like it when they occur, either naturally, or by way of serendipity/happy-accident. Oh, and 70 insect species? 70? That sounds positively heavenly! I also love the dry-adapted plant growth; I imagine that it must have a rather nice smell. I don't know why, but desert plants and semi-arid-environment plants seem to always smell the most magical to me. I think because on a level it's unexpected. Hmmm...I'm gonna have to think about that for a bit. This is really fantastic.

Great capture Sandra. Isn't that the volcano that if it erupts could create a tidal wave that could wipe out the entire eastern seaboard of the United States?

I am very struck by the colour of this shot and the rugged but desolate beauty of this place. One could fall in love with this no doubt cruel mistress.
