The Glen Canyon Dam is a concrete thick arch-gravity dam, 710 feet (220 meters) high, 1,560 feet (480 meters) wide at the top and 300 feet (91 meters) wide at the base. It was built on the Colorado River in northern Arizona in the United States, just north of Page. The discharge from the dam heads west into the Grand Canyon. The dam was built to provide hydroelectricity and flow regulation from the upper Colorado River Basin to the lower. The dam is named for Glen Canyon, a colorful series of gorges most of which now lies under the reservoir. Construction of Glen Canyon Dam started in 1956 and was not finished until 1966. The reservoir, created by this dam, is called Lake Powell, and is the second largest artificial lake in the country, extending upriver well into Utah. It can store 24,322,000 acre feet (30 km³) of water when full. Lake Powell is 186 miles (299 km) long and 25 miles (40 km) wide. The reservoir is named for explorer John Wesley Powell, a one-armed American Civil War veteran who explored the river via three wooden boats in 1869. Some info from Wikipedia. 1996 photo scanned.
