Description

I prepared this image last year for an exhibition in memory of Leonardo's 500th, an exhibition held in Florence in a prestigious 17th century building located right in front of Palazzo De Medici and a few steps from Brunelleschi's dome. The idea was to highlight the scientific and geometric aspect of Leonardo's work rather than pure aesthetic beauty. I publish it today because it is also the recurrence of the fact narrated therein.

Giving everything a geometric shape for this artwork is an excellent idea. Beautiful combination of colours.

At first look, it's strange but we immediately realize that this interpretation of the last scene is a pure wonder.

An image of a classic theme revisited by a very modern graphism! Fantastic art work!

The kind of image that I asked my students to create from a famous painting of their choice : keeping the proportions of the original painting and create a 3D scene with basic shapes.

Outstanding idea to create a image in your one style, of one of the paintings from Leonardo Da Vinci. Superb piece of artwork my friend.

The Last Supper ... without Judas! The most minimalist version that I have ever seen and that we can figure out its source ... even without any explanation! Fascinating!

Interesting that I never realized until today seeing this version that the central figure forms the head of a cross. I am now seeing a lot more in Leonardo's work. Thank you for sharing.

Giuliano, you're a treasure. I LOVE your geometric interpretation of the Last Supper! First, you turned Leonardo's tapestries (on the right and left walls of the painting) into huge slabs of stone! I LOVE that! And you've turned the 3 windows in the back into huge slabs of stone....And the table has become a huge, gorgeous slab of white stone (with reflections on the surface). The space---above and below the supper---are ALSO wonderful slabs of stone. And the TOP stones are transparent, as if they just came down from the heavens....Then, the bottom stones are in beautiful gold and bronze tones, and they give a beautiful rocky 'ground' to your whole image, probably like the soil of the original biblical narrative. And you've replaced the door (underneath the original painting) with those boulders too. I love it.

For the disciples and Jesus, you created abstracted, beautiful "artist's mannequins"---I don't know what you call it, in Italy, but I mean those little wooden models of the human figure, which you move around to imitate the moves and postures of real humans. I love the shapes of the 13 humans: cones, cones, cones. And you got all the postures and positions of the original painting. You even put Judas's arm on the table (I remember he was the only disciple who put his whole arm on the table---art historians felt this was important, as if to say that Judas thought he was as good as Christ) (it was also because he held a bag of silver, but some people think it also shows his terrible arrogance and disrespect). And you tilted Jesus' head, and centered him, as Leonardo did...I can't find the right words...but your use of huge blocks of stone is just brilliant---you've not only captured The Last Supper's proportions; you've turned it into pure geometric 'crystals', as if this were the inner-reality of the painting. (I.e., if we did an x-ray of the painting, an MRI, we would find these pure beautiful crystals, glowing inside.) Your light, here, is so positive. And your colors---especially on the disciples---are wonderful. Like Christmas foil...A terrific interpretation. And I think da Vinci would like this---he was so aware of proportions, perspective and geometry, I think he'd love your interpretation. Terrific image!
