Your eye sees a contrast range of 2000 to 1, slide film it's 4 to 1, so you use The ND Grad(graduated neutral density) to hold back the light on the bright part and bring the contrast within a range that film can hadle. The filter is a large rectangular shape, with half of it clear, and half of it darkened, that fits in a Cokin P holder, which allows you to slide it up and down. You place the line between dark and light in a place that will hide the line, in this picture thats where the sky meets the ocean, but you must have a depth of field preview button on your camera body, because the line moves when you change f/stops. You select the f/stop you will use, hold the DOF button, and move the filter up and down, finding the correct place to hide the line.

Here is a link to the ND grad filters at Mountain Light, with an example of the same picture with and without the ND Grads, Galen Rowell was killed with his wife in a plane crash, I was lucky to have taken his workshop in 1994 and learn the techniques used in this image http://mountainlight.com/filters.html

For those who are beginners and don't completly understand f/stops, shutter speeds, depth of field ,etc, John Shaw has without a doubt the best books available, and they are useful even for the most experienced.

Someone who keeps flawless notes.... I'm really bad at that myself. John Shaw's books are the best.... Love this shot! Perfection!

Michell A. I'm really bad at taking notes, if I take any at all. I've been into photography since age 10, I'm 37, so alot of stuff is second nature to me. Mountain Light, by Galen Rowell, is a great book also.
