Description

Second Beach, Olympic National Park. This picture would not be possible without the 3 stop hard edge graduated neutral density filter. The filter is dark on the top half, and clear on the bottom,and is color neutral. Nikon N90, Nikon 24mm f/2.8, Galen Rowell 3 stop hard edge ND Grad, Fuji Velvia slide film. Exposure: f/22, 4 seconds

Your eye sees a contrast range of 2000 to 1, slide film it's 4 to 1, so you use The ND Grad(graduated neutral density) to hold back the light on the bright part and bring the contrast within a range that film can hadle. The filter is a large rectangular shape, with half of it clear, and half of it darkened, that fits in a Cokin P holder, which allows you to slide it up and down. You place the line between dark and light in a place that will hide the line, in this picture thats where the sky meets the ocean, but you must have a depth of field preview button on your camera body, because the line moves when you change f/stops. You select the f/stop you will use, hold the DOF button, and move the filter up and down, finding the correct place to hide the line.

For those who are beginners and don't completly understand f/stops, shutter speeds, depth of field ,etc, John Shaw has without a doubt the best books available, and they are useful even for the most experienced.
