Description

Nature is its own artist. The ingredients are simply three of the four elements, sand (earth), ice (water) and wind (air). Let the time do its job and watch how nature starts to make something beautiful of it. Oh yes, the last element is required as well! Fire, that has to be in the heart of the photographer! :) The North-sea shore is some 84 km (52 miles) distant, so this landscape of dunes will not lead you to the sea. I'm sorry! ;) This sand lies on altitudes between 20 and 25 m (65 - 85 ft) and belongs to the old forests of the Veluwe, the largest united woodland of the Netherlands. Superb sand ripples, Jan-Carel. There must be a thriving insect population in these flat dunes. I used to like examining such scenes, when I was a boy, but my back and eyesight do not allow that now. Regards as always, John.

These 4 elements were the ancient classification. Now that we have discovered atoms and particles, scientists like to use the words "liquid" for the water, "solid" for the land and "gaseous" for the air. I assume that the fire became the "energy" which exists in any state of the matter. Anyway, I've always thought that these both classifications were too restrictive and I think that the sand and the ice (the subject of your image) is the natural proof that these 3 states are just 3 steps between an infinite number of variations. The sand is not a liquid element, neither a solid element. Before the water turns to ice, it goes through numerous different states that we can hardly classify and your previous shots clearly showed this. I mean, mathematicians really made a kind of "revolution" when they agreed that the fractal numbers were the proof that spatial dimensions couldn't be defined ONLY with integer numbers. They came to this conclusion by looking at the nature. How can you measure the distance on the ground between the 2 bushes in your picture if you want to have the maximum accuracy? Because of the sand grains, this is impossible with such a restriction, this is how fractals have been discovered. If mathematicians are able to change their mind, I just wonder how long physicists will keep this old-fashioned classification. Nice shot, dear...

Awesome. I love to see this. I have only seen one other picture of ice on sand... yours excels it by far. Terrific work. Cropped just right I think too.

clapping i luv this closer peek of the sand art!! It's soooooo beautiful! The textures are quite pleasing to me, as well as the design, which reminds me of some kind of animal. are those tiger stripes? or perhaps a donkey's??? i dunno, but i love it. now, i have to tell you that this shot makes me verrrrrry curious. upper right hand corner...you give us just a peek of some hole...perhaps a cave????? i do hope to see more of this cave...an inside shot would be great!! i'm thinking there might be a wild boar in there!!! Fantastic image of nature's artistry, jan-carel...with ALL the required elements!!!

That is really quite beautiful with the ice and the sand together. You don't often see that at the same time. Excellent work my dear friend.

putting all the technical stuff beside...what I see are a bunch of sand snakes basking in the sun after a night of frozen tundra! But that's just me... []/;^)
