Subject: Woe is me! My love affair is over....I'm sad

Well folks....I installed Vic 3 into P4. I have been using P5 since it was released, with maybe just a couple of times using P4. Tonight I tried Vic3. First off, I don't have Pro Pack, so all the bumps had to be converted...which I didn't do...click fest as I had to double click is map about 30 times. Then I noticed the morphs didn't seem to work the same in P4 and P5...my French/Germanic character using exactly the same dial settings did not look the same...why? probably the focal length of the camera... Then the render...all you have to do is look at this, and nuff said. Quite frankly, I don't think I can go back to P4...as much as it seems really off the wall to even make that statement.

don't go back to P4 if you don't want, use her in P5.....:>)

The whole deal...I was fully stoked when P5 came out...then the big letdown...but I kept chugging away...chugging away...chugging away... I've found myself getting attached to some of the changes, such as the mouse scrolling, the ability to actually see the dials and the words :) The lighting is so much better. Applying bump maps is so much easier.... I could go on and on...I really hadn't thought about it much until tonight, when I went back to P4..... There is a huge difference beyween the 2 versions.

here's a quick render pair with same settings as close as I could get them. Poser5 at firefly default and Poser4, (the real p4, not the rendererin P5),... P4 was set at no shadows, all bump maps off, anti-aliasing. P5 is default firefly, nothing touched

I like both, here is a render of Vickie3 in P4 that I set up in about 10 minutes start to finish. I like P5 for lots of things, but I still use P4 for a lot of quick stuff. Marque

I have P4 and MY V3 doesn't look like that! She looks rather good actually. See image - strait Poser 4 render, no post. Yeah, I know the nose is a bit big, but I was just fooling around with the head morphs ;o). Laurie

I only have P4 too, and my V3 looks AMAZING! (Far more real than any other character I currently own!)

Dave-So I think what happened with your render is the bump map for the head isn't assigned properly. This happens from time to time. But hey! Use whatever you want. It's all good. I have P5 but prefer to use P4 until I can get my system updated with something faster than 500mhz processor. Hopefully, I can get that with my Christmas money this year...

Dave-So ( ) posted Mon, 23 December 2002 at 8:42 AM

V3 is awesome. The p4 renders here look real nice :) I think the comment about incorrect bump alignment is right. It looks much better in the second render...plus the 5oclock shadow was just plugging in the MATs and rendering.... The bumps came in at 70% which is way too high. In p5 they don't attach to the BUMP channel, but to the Bump Gradient channel, which subdues them.... I turned the bumps off in the comparison render, although her neck is messed up in the P4 render, and neither look as good as the images from Rockets, Laurie, serpentis, and Marque. As far as V3, there is no question that she is a model with a thousand different faces...

Nice render Rocket, she looks close to the actress who played the wife in Multiplicity. Can't think of her name. Marque

PoisenedLily ( ) posted Mon, 23 December 2002 at 9:11 AM

Geena Davis? I think that was her name, and thats who she looks like :)

Marque ( ) posted Mon, 23 December 2002 at 9:19 AM

Yes! Thanks it was driving me crazy! Marque

LaurieA ( ) posted Mon, 23 December 2002 at 9:19 AM

Andie McDowell (sp) :o). Laurie

PoisenedLily ( ) posted Mon, 23 December 2002 at 9:24 AM

Np Marque, its a really good likeness as thats how I guessed it!

Oh, what a nice compliment...I think Gina Davis is so cute. :-)

P4 has an old but sometimes known Bump map render bug with some video cards. Has happened to me where I get spots with some bump settings.

She works fine for me in P4, she even seems to reflect in the mirror! I'll have an free update (it will be a pose) to fit the Las-Vegas and San-Francisco hair to her shortly, incidently. Oh, these aren't stock morphs...

Dave-So ( ) posted Mon, 23 December 2002 at 1:25 PM

Hi Jim, Will be looking forward to the hair updates...I have both :)

Papu ( ) posted Mon, 23 December 2002 at 4:58 PM

BTW, LaurieA, re: post 9 --- I wonder what she would look like with the head camera focal length at 105 mm in Poser - the default seems to distort the face a bit...

creativechaos ( ) posted Tue, 24 December 2002 at 12:57 AM

Mine is set with a camera focal length of 110 Papu. Looks great if you ask me

Sure, Serpentis, it does :) 105 mm is what I personally am used to. Here's some discussion about the subject : photo.net : What's the ideal focal length for a portrait lens?.

creativechaos ( ) posted Tue, 24 December 2002 at 2:05 AM

Depending on where the subject lies I use different focal lengths. For portraits I've been using 110 for a while and it works pretty good for me. I might have to try 105 once and see if it makes that much of a difference. :) Reading the link now.

Papu ( ) posted Tue, 24 December 2002 at 2:20 AM

Nah, I don't really think it makes much of a difference if it's 110 or 105. Just as long as it isn't the Poser default of 38 mm :P

Dave-So ( ) posted Tue, 24 December 2002 at 8:42 AM

P5 comes in at 50mm... What's real strange, it doesn't change the look if you're at 38, 50, or 105 as Poser 4 does. Poser 4 actually completely distorts the head at 38mm, looks like a completely different person.

actually, disregard...I think they are pretty much the same. Maybe its Vic 3 that doesn't seem to didtort as much. I have a study of different focal lengths that I did on V2...she looked totally different at 38 vs 105....

I still say the default the ears comes in at makes her look like Dumbo no matter what LOL and Papu...trust me, I NEVER NEVER NEVER use the default 38mm my god it's aweful! ALthough when I first got Poser I didn't realize and looking back on my old images, my older ones look like aliens to me now ROFLMAO

I bought Sisters from dalinise when it first came out...they distorted worse than anything I had ever seen... LOL :) Without doubt the most alien, weird characters I had ever seen.... We had several conversations about that...finally realized it was the focal length...it was the first time that was brought to my attention :)

Papu ( ) posted Tue, 24 December 2002 at 12:21 PM

Serpentis, same here, I didn't have a clue about focal length (or anyhing else for that matter ;) when I first started with Poser. Don't even want to look at my early images anymore (also, I hadn't realized you could turn IK off and not get the characters legs in such a mess ... or that you could conform clothes - I tried to manually pose them on the character at first which was a bit hard :D )

creativechaos ( ) posted Tue, 24 December 2002 at 9:43 PM

Papu, it took me months to realize there was an EASY way to conform clothing! I can't believe I was such an idiot back then. Then again, my brother and sister-in-law are starting with Poser and that was the first thing I showed them ROFLMAO. Ahh, how the mighty do teach ;) Trust me, I think I've deleted all my early works. I couldn't stand to look at them they were so damned bad. The camera focal length really makes a huge difference in how your render comes out. I won't even use the default 38mm for full body shots any longer it makes their face look really weird. I guess that's why we're always learning new stuff eh?
