I've had a number of emails like this over the last 18 months and while a couple of them might be warez requests the majority seem to be someone who's downloaded a freebie from somewhere without understanding what they're downloading or the requirements for it to work. The selection of recipient for the email isn't always deliberate, it depends on a number of factors. You've told them where they can get the file from, that's all that really matters. If they're after warez then they'll get what they want eventualy anyway. Pointing them in the right direction may have a beneficial effect.

Man, that is sad - somebody using a Turkish government e-mail address to solicit warez.

SAMS3D ( ) posted Sun, 12 January 2003 at 2:18 PM

Is that where it is from? Well you are right, I did tell them where to get it I was just blown away that someone would ask me....Sharen

Questor, I was gonna say that. SAMS and mateo: I wouldn't assume it's solicitation of warez. They probably just tried to use something they bought or got in FreeStuff, Poser said it could not find the OBJ, and they mailed you asking where that OBJ was. They may have thought it was supposed to be part of the package. Their English isn't great, so they didn't embellish much. SAMS, you did right, especially if you didn't scold them. They asked where to download it, and the answer is from DAZ3d.com, with th added value information that it requires a small purchase to be able to download. Just sounds like a valid question, to me. 'I need this OBJ, where do I get it?'. You gave a valid answer. Good work!

I got that e-mail too and suggested he visit DAZ as well. I also mentioned that the original Victoria is in the Loft there and that it's not expensive now. Hope he's able to do the right thing and purchase it. :) SnowS

I do not speak as a representative of DAZ, I speak only as a long-time member here. Be nice (and quit lying about DAZ) and I'll be nice too.

He was asking for the obj file Anton. Can't test drive an object can you? Well, unless you're conversent with character setup in Poser. So, I disagree, it's not a given fact that this person was searching for warez. A relatively safe assumption but not a given fact. There are a considerable number of files available for download that require the Victoria object in order to work - clothing, characters, etc. Not saying the person is innocent, but I'm not prepared to condemn them either. Not without further evidence. :)

_dodger ( ) posted Sun, 12 January 2003 at 5:11 PM

Dude, the guy was Turkish. You expect eloquence in English? I dunno, to me it sounds like a perfectly rational 'it says I need this, where is this?'

_dodger ( ) posted Sun, 12 January 2003 at 5:16 PM

Mm. Even if it was a warez request (I'm not saying it couldn't have been), it wouldn't be good form to chew them out for it, when directing them to the place where you download the file (along with the CR2) is perfectly effective either way -- if it's a genuine 'I don't know, what the hell is this thing it's asking for?' it answers the question. If it's a warez request, saying 'hey, can you tell me where to get a copy of this licensed product that I don't feel like paying...' -- what's it, $20 now? -- it makes a perfect statement of 'Go buy it, dickhead.'

You guys delve way too far into the hypothetical.

Well, anyway at least he or she now know where to get it. Sharen

Also, I am glad I know enough about poser and Daz and others now not to have given it out. Some newbies should take note to this. If a newbie has a question regarding this, best to ask. Sharen

Anton: both situations are hypothetical.

Beware of any email from Hotmail.com. There have been a lot of virus-infected files bombarding computers coming from Hotmail especially those with strange subject lines and attachments.

You mean those Big@Boss ones? I've seen a lot of those because it's gotten through one of the mailing lists I'm subscribed to. I ignore them and delete them, along with my tons of spam, immediately.
