I know alot of you do your own modeling, however, I was looking for spaceship models when I came upon this site of architectural models of some of the great buildings of the world....temples, circus', scottish towers, castles, craftsman houses, libraries, landmarks, it goes on and on, they're in .3dmf format (I think Bryce imports this) and they also offer free software, DesignWorkshop, for building models...so if you're interested take the link...:)

Hmmm. I tried the barcelona building and Bryce crashed. Anyone else get one to import?

dan whiteside ( ) posted Mon, 13 January 2003 at 7:30 AM

They use a newer .3dmf version then Bryce supports. I have to use my modeler to do a conversion. -Dan www.bryceworks.com

If you scroll down to the B section, you see my house, hehe. I forgot all about that site, Zhann. Nice recall.

Dan, which modeler did you use to convert 3dmf?

catlin_mc ( ) posted Mon, 13 January 2003 at 10:48 AM

Thanks for the link Zhann, I had this before but lost it after a reinstall.

dan whiteside ( ) posted Mon, 13 January 2003 at 11:31 AM

"which modeler did you use to convert 3dmf? " FormZ - one of the few apps that has a really good 3DMF interface and supports the entire specification. For instance, when I first tried the Barcelona building it was all white, turned out it was 21 lights! Anyway, if anyone really wants one of these let me know and I'd be happy to do the conversion (to .OBJ). It doesn't look like converting would be a violation of the copyrights (?). Best - Dan

tjohn ( ) posted Mon, 13 January 2003 at 4:53 PM

I wonder if Crossroads would do it. I don't have the shareware, but if you do, will it convert these to something we can use in Bryce?

No Tjohn, I checked! It can't read but could write the format but is slated to do so in the future. I can't believe there isn't anything else out there in common use that can do the conversion.

A page with numerous converters. I'm currently downloading MeshBox (15 day trial - full) which can convert 3dmf, with the help of Quesa, a freeware. http://www.quesa.org/

Hi I use an old copy of 3D exploration (version 1.5.30) This seems to open them ok and I can resave them as wavefront obj and 3ds files.

Zhann ( ) posted Tue, 14 January 2003 at 4:38 PM

Any body have a link to 3D Exploration, is it shareware, freeware or does it cost, my Bryce like 3ds files the most for import, and I have other things to convert...

I've had my copy for ages think I got a demo and then bought it. Dont think it was very expensive at the time but I beleve it has since become Deep Exploration sold by Right Hemisphere. I don't know if the old 3D exploration is still available anywhere.

Erlik ( ) posted Tue, 14 January 2003 at 5:15 PM

$249 now. They do have some excellent programs like Deep Paint 3D and Deep Paint. I've become enamored of DP 3D when I saw a review and a picture that looked like a regular oil on canvas, done with it. I believe that Deep Paint can do quite a lot of similar stuff, only not on 3D models. But I don't have a thousand dollars for DP3D, although I might have $99 for DP one day. www.righthemisphere.com

How dare people charge for software! You'd think they're trying to make a living or something. :^) Well, I can't afford to spend more on my hobby right now. Those sure do look like great building models.

$249 bucks don't even grow on bryce trees! Well, I guess we can make it happen in cyberspace but will they accept cyber money? Just a little too steep a price for just a few conversions me thinks.

Quest ( ) posted Tue, 14 January 2003 at 6:36 PM

Roch222, I've tried all kinds of angles on DesignWorkshop Lite to make the conversion on a 3dmf model I downloaded from them earlier, even in wiremesh mode and I can't get to do it. If you've done it, would you share with us your secret?

catlin_mc ( ) posted Tue, 14 January 2003 at 6:58 PM

I've got the DesignWorkshop Lite and 3D Exploration, so if I can get the buildings into .3ds or .obj then I'll post them in free stuff for anyone who wants them. Catlin

Quest ( ) posted Tue, 14 January 2003 at 10:19 PM

LOL...my point exactly tjohn! Nice render BTW! Good use of the leaf editor in Tree Lab. Dan, Catlin_mc, thanks for the offer to do the conversions but I'd hate to be a pain in the - - - if everytime i decided I wanted to use one of the models in one of my renderings I'd have to bother you. Erlik, thanks for the link but I've already been all through there and couldn't find a reasonably priced piece of software to do the required conversion. They want $150 for Meshbox and I don't think I need the model that bad. I'll wait until Crossroads gets it together.

Erlik ( ) posted Wed, 15 January 2003 at 1:59 AM

As I said, Meshbox has a 15-days fully-featured trial. I think you can do a lot in 15 days. :-)

Zhann ( ) posted Wed, 15 January 2003 at 3:32 AM

If a software has a free trial, then you work like h3ll to convert as many things as possible in the time you have, it's always worth it. First download the things you want to convert, get everything in place, folders etc, then download the software trial, install, and convert like crazy, you'd be surpised at how much you can convert in 15 days...:P

Phantast ( ) posted Wed, 15 January 2003 at 10:14 AM

This site has been discussed before. I never found anything that successfully read .3dmf after extensive looking except for some relatively expensive things. If someone is able to convert these buildings it would be nice if we could all share somehow, rather than each person downloading the Meshbox trial and each doing all the conversion work separately. Such a redistribution might be technically a breach of copyright, but the net effect would be the same as if a completely legal procedure was followed.

catlin_mc ( ) posted Wed, 15 January 2003 at 1:43 PM

If I convert and post in free stuff I don't see I'm doing anything wrong, I'm only helping out my friends. But if I convert and charge folk for the models then I think I would be doing something illegal. So hows about $10 a model.........only joking. 8P Catlin

Zhann ( ) posted Wed, 15 January 2003 at 11:42 PM

Seeing the site these models are on is offering them free, I don't see a breach of copyright should someone convert them and also offer them free, however, I think they're offered in .3dmf in order to get you to try out their software, and possibly purchase it...

Not to be judgemental here, but I think in order to be ethical, if not merely legal, permission to convert and post the objects should be obtained from those who created and posted the objects in the first place. Just a thought.

However, I don't see any problems converting objects for your own use. I do that everytime I download a poser or 3ds object and import it into bryce, technically.

Alright here's the skinny on the copyright issue; I emailed the site asking if it would be alright if we could convert their 3D models so that they could be rendered for exhibition purposes only without commercial gains. Their response was polite and even showed some interest. My email; I've looked and see no copyrighted notices advising viewers that although the models are in 3dmf format, that they should not be converted over to other, more common formats and was wondering if that presents a problem as long as it's not being done for commercial gain. In other words, we have a bunch of fans that would love to use your buildings in their 3D renderings only to exhibit. Would there, in your opinion, be a problem with that? We thank you for your exquisite work. Their response; Thanks for writing to Artifice. Copyright for all 3DMF model files at GreatBuildings.com is held by Artifice, Inc. Only private, personal viewing of the models is permitted. Any other use including conversion or distribution of the models requires prior written permission from Artifice, Inc. If you could explain in greater detail what you have in mind, we'd be glad to discuss how that might be possible. We'll look forward to hearing from you again. Best wishes, David Owen rights@artifice.com

catlin_mc ( ) posted Thu, 16 January 2003 at 10:33 PM

If thats the case hows about doing a render of one of there buildings converted to .obj and sending it to them along with a link to the Bryce Gallery to see our general work. Catlin

Zhann ( ) posted Fri, 17 January 2003 at 12:17 AM

Catlin, sounds like a plan, not to mention they receive credit for the models and that means more business to their site, it is personal use after all, and they may be unaware of Bryce (who knows) and the large following it has here...

Hope they see more of what we do than just NVITs (Naked Vickis in Temples) or they'll think we're just into soft porn and want to use their buildings for making that. They'll reject us immediately. Unless...they happened to be into that, I guess, LOL.
