Subject: How many of you use Poser 5

Hey I was just wondering how many of you use Poser 5? Maybe you could post some of your new beautiful renders too

Here's one I just did with the hair. I didn't make this hair prop = it's from RDNA, but I've made others and it's not hard to do. I also love the material room. The cloth room is taking me longer to learn, mainly because my machine goes really slow on the simulations (I know nothing about animation and I think that would really help in the cloth room)and I don't have enough patience and time to mess with it unfortunately. I've also been using P5 since it's release with little problem on my machine.

rogergordian ( ) posted Tue, 28 January 2003 at 8:15 PM

I put Poser 5 on the shelf for a time because it wouldn't render one character's hair at all. Then I tried Poser 5 with Vicky 3, and a good scene. It took forever to render, and I said screw it. Besides I've yet to find a good source of info on the more advanced Poser 5 features. The manual is faulty and I haven't found any good tutorials either. Maybe I'll retry Poser 5 in a few months.

dialyn ( ) posted Tue, 28 January 2003 at 8:20 PM

I use both Poser 4 and Poser 5 because some products made for Poser 4 don't work as well in Poser 5, but I do find myself using Poser 5 more and more. My graphics aren't beautiful but they are in a gallery under my username. The lack of artistry is not the fault of Poser 5...it's mine. I do find that the more I use Poser 5, the easier it is for me to use and the better I like it. I know not everyone agrees but that's how it was for me. The last patch cleared up most of the problems. I am not saying it is perfect by any means, but I am also running it on a Windows ME with not much power behind it. I find it a heck of a lot easier than my current struggle to learn how to model. :(

galactron22 ( ) posted Tue, 28 January 2003 at 8:44 PM

I'm Still on Propack, In My opinion P5 is too complicated with it's Hair room, Cloth room, texture room ect.

Ask me a question, and I'll give you an answer.

iamonk ( ) posted Tue, 28 January 2003 at 9:04 PM

Just count all of the bald heads! Renders? They should look the same. Buy P5, and you still have to use the P4 renderer if you want to get anything accomplished. That is unless, of course, you are on wellfare and/or have no life. Where is the speed that CL said FireFly had? It does make nice fuzzies if you use displacement mapping!!!

chanson ( ) posted Tue, 28 January 2003 at 9:28 PM

It seems this debate is very old in the forum now. Some are die hard one way, and others the other way. If you want to see renders, search the galleries. I poked around a lot before ordering P5. If you're happy with P4, stick with it. If there are features you want to expolre in P5, go that way. Eventually everyone will go to P5 (perhaps with pro pack after that comes out), or they will go to Daz's proported new potential poser replacement. This whole debate is not unlike that which goes around operating systems. "Win 98 stinks. We need a new version" "XP is no better, I'm staying with 98" "I'll go to Linux" "Linux doesn't run my programs well" "Settle back on XP" etc.... P4 wasn't perfect so we griped and asked for new features. P5 isn't perfect so we gripe about the new features. It seems that someday we'll understand that products made by people will never fully meet our expectations. If it's good enough and useful enough to warrant the purchase price, we'll buy it, use it, and not stress over it!

RNKarenER ( ) posted Tue, 28 January 2003 at 9:30 PM

I just bought poser 5 and installed it. It was so confusing to me that I un-installed it until I learn everything there is to know about poser 4. It will sit on it's disk until then! I did try to render a character first, but it was taking longer then 15 min to render a small test run!

ivyroses ( ) posted Tue, 28 January 2003 at 9:38 PM

Im using 5 but really havent had the time to do gallery type renders.

EsnRedshirt ( ) posted Tue, 28 January 2003 at 9:47 PM

I use P5 exclusively... actually, I never owned a poser program before P5. I guess the reason that more P5 users aren't replying to this message is that we're too busy rendering cool things. Frankly, I love all the rooms- the setup room is great; most of my props are now figures, the hair room is nice (if a bit tricky to work with), and the possibilities of the Materials room are incredible. Try a raytraced reflective metal texture in both the Firefly renderer and the P4 renderer, and you'll see that P5 is truely impressive. I've never had problems with the speed of the rendering, then again, I do have a semi-buff machine. Sorry if this seems like a flame-bait post- I just thought some of us P5 lovers should speak up, since we seem to be under-represented.

MachineClaw ( ) posted Tue, 28 January 2003 at 9:55 PM

I'm with EsnRedshirt. Never owned Poser prior to Version 5. Poser5 works fine for me, though I prob am not feelin the difference since all I have is Poser5. I also do not do animations, and that seems like where all the major bugs are found. I haven't posted any of my work, it's not ready for prime time.

Mock ( ) posted Tue, 28 January 2003 at 10:02 PM

Poser5 is just one of those things you have to get used to. I got it as soon as it came out and disliked it right away it was buggy and slow and all my previous projects had to be adjusted to look right. Now Im using Poser5 almost exclusively (I still wish materials translated from Poser4 to Poser5 more accurately and I wish that P5 had both its current material room and a simpler P4 room). I like how the menus work and how the morph and property dials are sub divided. And I like the variety of options for the material room. Ive done my own face in the face room and dang it didnt look half bad. Ive played with the hair a bit but thats going to be my next conquest.

Niles ( ) posted Tue, 28 January 2003 at 10:19 PM

Like them both, ... but using P5 more, I would have bought P5 just to get rid of p4 crosstalk. ... but it is, to quote Forrest Gumps Mom "like a box of chocolate... you don't know what you are going to get". But hey, what ever you needs are... like "Poser, rendered in Bryce, lots and lots , of Postwork in PS"... like I said what ever your needs/style require.

Cage ( ) posted Tue, 28 January 2003 at 10:20 PM

I found Poser 5 almost completely impossible to use until the most recent patch. Now I have been using it almost exclusively. There are a few quirks left, but it is stable and fairly friendly now. Although I do spend a lot of time cursing whenever I go into the cloth room.... The new materials room is a beautiful thing. Now that I've adjusted to the new materials, I don't think I could use P4 to render anything. It would feel like trading Vicki for a Poser 2 figure....

===========================sigline======================================================

Cage can be an opinionated jerk who posts without thinking.  He apologizes for this.  He's honestly not trying to be a turkeyhead.

Cage had some freebies, compatible with Poser 11 and below.  His Python scripts were saved at archive.org, along with the rest of the Morphography site, where they were hosted.

When I got P5 I uninstalled P4 and haven't looked back. This is my latest render in p5. Firefly, vicky 2(started this before v3 came out) mike 2 with warlord, all those trees are variations on Anton's bonsai, garm the hellhoud, house mouse, ud long hair, anton's changing ponytail, staffs, antons magic, mouse vest(little dragon?), oz landscape, sky dome, textures on garm and trees and grass done by me in the material room, grass combination bantam 3d and p5 hair room.....questors glaive too...I think that's it. :) Post work needs to be done on the hair..might go back, OH gypies and genies(daz) and change vicki's clothes. Took about 1hr 1/2 to render...did it last tuesday while watching buffy, and a tape of gilmore girls.

BeatYourSoul ( ) posted Wed, 29 January 2003 at 12:32 AM

I'm now using Poser 5 exclusively, especially since the latest patch, finding that most P5 scenes (new features do not transfer) can load into C4D, and then finding that the Poser->C4D plugin can be made to work in C4D R8. Moved my entire library (etc) to P5 and haven't looked back (yet). Still, must keep P4Pro installed for the Poser->? plugins, but that doesn't bother me.

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Wed, 29 January 2003 at 12:44 AM

I'm still using both P4 and P5, at least until the Walk Designer is fixed.

I haven't added anything to my gallery in months, but I've posted images here in the forums.

http://www.renderosity.com/messages.ez?Form.ShowMessage=1020351
This was a comparison of P5's displacement mapping to P4's bump mapping.

http://www.renderosity.com/messages.ez?Form.ShowMessage=932865
Most of these were rendered in Poser 5 (mine, anyway; MaPPer's are P5, also, I believe). Note the first image; no crosstalk between figures. The stream images demonstrate raytraced reflections.

http://www.renderosity.com/messages.ez?Form.ShowMessage=1016982
More P5 renders; no crosstalk. The grassy field was achieved with displacement.

http://www.renderosity.com/messages.ez?Form.ShowMessage=994366
This thread demonstrates some of P5's animated-material features.

Firebirdz ( ) posted Wed, 29 January 2003 at 3:47 AM

I bought Poser 2 way back in 96/97 but thought it was too complicated (lol). Never touched Poser again but saw an Ad on Poser 5 last year November and upgraded it with a discount to Poser 5. It took me about one month to read the Manual then posted my first image. Now I try a bit of everything - Materials Room, Hair Room, Cloth Room, Setup room etc. It really isn't that mind boogling if you have the patience to read the manual and ask questions and read the wonderful tutorials the community has contributed. Poser 5 is great! it was even better of course after SR1. I did experience crashes before that release.

Firebirdz ( ) posted Wed, 29 January 2003 at 3:48 AM

I meant SR2

quinlor ( ) posted Wed, 29 January 2003 at 3:50 AM

I use Poser 5 and never started P4 since I have it. It is so much more powerfull. Expecialy the material room. Stefan

Spit ( ) posted Wed, 29 January 2003 at 4:16 AM

I have both but mostly stick to Propack. Poser 5 is stable for me with the patch, but slow. Cloth is complicated, I don't care for the hair, face room is fun but kind of a toy. I'm not that impressed with Firefly and the new materials since I use Bryce which also has scenebuilding tools that Poser sorely lacks. If I avoid the hair I don't have to use Firefly so I just do stuff in ProPack which is faster. Some nice features in 5 though like the libraries and parameters. Sigh. Put those in P4 Propack and I'd never look at P5 again.

fauve ( ) posted Wed, 29 January 2003 at 5:23 AM

I use both. I was mostly using P5 until recently, because it was running well on my machine. Then I installed the latest service pack. After I did, P5 developed all sorts of memory problems (crashes, hangs, etc.) Since then, I have reluctantly gone back to PPP (reluctantly because I really miss the hair room, cloth room, nested subfolders, etc.) I like the new features in P5 very, very much, but damn, I wish they'd solve the instability issues once and for all.

dona_ferentes ( ) posted Wed, 29 January 2003 at 6:20 AM

I been using Poser since version 3. I loved 3. I really loved 4. I really REALLY loved 4 with the Pluspack. I have P5, and think it will be a great program if they ever finish it. I play with P5 sometimes, but to get stuff done, I use P4

I do. All my new Poser pics are done in P5 using Firefly. I install everything into my Pro-Pack install and use a linked runtime.

mjonesboy ( ) posted Wed, 29 January 2003 at 6:47 AM

Just got P5 installed a week ago, still learning new features...(actually still learning P2,P3,P4). I've been using Poser since P2, but not often enough to get good at it. So far, I really like P5 but haven't transitioned completely away from P4. No renders to post or brag about... right now ;-). I'm fascinated with the Firefly renderer doing ray-traced reflections and tweeking the node settings.

Switched to P5 & wouldn't switch back if you paid me. Loads faster, renders faster and in P4 if I tried to bring in a scene with 8-10 characters it would take over an hour and body parts would be missing. In P5 it takes 2 minutes and everything is there.

I finally got the handle of P5, but I still keep P4 around just for emergencies.... I haven't gone back Yet!(knock on wood) The first 8 images, when you go into my gallery, were all done in P5, if you still want to see some P5 renders. It took a while to get used to, but I think I can hang with it now, despite some little flaws. But then what program doesn't have it's little problems?!

a_super_hero ( ) posted Wed, 29 January 2003 at 9:21 AM

I prefer P5, because of keeping track of all the stuff I have in my library.

I got P5 for Xmas. All the images in my gallery from Xmas on are P5. I love it. It installed easily. I lonk my 25 gig library on a second drive so I can keep my OS drive backed up. I keep P4 Pro Pak installed so I can use it for the Tailor or export to Max. ockman's "delete lights" saved me. Before that script my firfly render hung up or was incredibly slow. Now I run the script before every light change and the firefly render is a s quick as the P4 render. I also make sure there are only necessary lights casting shadows and I find the reay trace is actually faster. This image was my first Firefly render and my first V3 render. The only postwork is a slight blur.

lululee ( ) posted Wed, 29 January 2003 at 9:39 AM

The diamonds on the necklace did not render properly because i forgot to set the materials properly.

I use Poser since Poser3. I got Poser 5 as soon as it was released, got angry at the beta version, and love it since the SR2 patch. This was my first try at it, with "straight from the box" features. The learning curve is getting better now, but this was a start. I would not go back to Poser 4 now. Poser 5 is so much more convenient and comfortable. It's just more complicated, but much less so than many a modeller program... Compiler

Ajax ( ) posted Wed, 29 January 2003 at 2:48 PM

I'm using both P4 and P5. P4 runs so much faster that I do all of my posing and scene setup there, then load the document in P5 to do materials and hair and cloth. I haven't posted any P5 pics yet.

I started with Poser 4, added ProPack and now use Poser 5 exclusively (since the last patch). My box says I was order #100 and I pre-ordered it the first available day. I still don't do much with the hair or cloth rooms and nothing fancy with the materials room. I do play with Serge Marck's tutorials for the cloth room and I'm learning...but it's a really steep learning curve for me. I also must admit that I've mainly done still pics and not animations with P5. I love the way FireFly renders--usually. Sometimes you get some weird effects. The main reason I use P5 exclusively is the ability to sort all your libraries into separate ones. Now, I can occasionally find the MAT file I'm looking for. (My new 128 gig external hard drive is already 2/3 full of Poser stuff.)

BeatYourSoul ( ) posted Thu, 30 January 2003 at 12:24 AM

pigfish, God, man! Seek counselling! 85 GB of Poser stuff!!!! :) Yeah, the library with hierarchy is the best thing they could've ever done. No more infinite scrolling or lost items due to overflow (255 is the limit, IIRC).

soulhuntre ( ) posted Sun, 02 February 2003 at 1:22 AM

I am a bit late in posting but we use Poser 5 pretty much all the time at our studio. The netter lighting, better library managemenbt and the materials abilities are exactly what we needed!
