The "pros" (and anybody else lucky enough) use live models. Most stuff that you'll find in magazines and online are not hires enough or contain "printing artifacts" that will interfere with the quality of texture. To compound the problem, most photos will not be optimal for transfering as textures - highlights, shadows, clothes, hair, facial expressions (you want neutral), odd angles, occluded features, etc. If you are not looking for hires textures, you might get something good from very high-quality color prints (books, mags, posters) that are large (8.5x11 min.). You'll have to either make the texture small enough to remove the printing artifacts as subpixel or use a tool to remove them. Some image scanning software does a good job of removing the "print masking".

If some enterprising photographer wanted to rake in some cash, they could create a site devoted to hi-res photos of all different sorts of people. Mec4D had one, but it was way out of the price range of most Poser users. And just think of the opportunities to meet attractive people of the opposite sex.... ;) Back when I was painting sci-fi and fantasy, I had the most fun walking up to a drop-dead gorgeous guy and, brandishing a camera, asking if I could photograph him in exchange for a print of any paintings I used his image in. Took me a couple of years to work up the courage to do it, but after the first time, it was dead easy. Of course, I wasn't doing nude shots, which might take a bit more finesse. I did find that people who were used to posing nude (I painted Suzy Owens a number of times, for example) hadn't the slightest hesitation in providing me with files full of pics taken by pros. But that was all before the era of digital hi-res....... Why not suggest the idea to all the budding photographers we know? There's money in it for them and more textures just waiting to happen for us......

Elgyfu- The URL is saying it doesn't exist... I am a beginner at Poser...I barely even scratched the surface of how to find and use all the features in Poser4ProPack. I just found a really nice step by step tutorial of how to make your own textures using photos...I made the texture on a seamguide but I have no clue of prepareing it to be able to be used in Poser....I used the P4NW seamguide...I just don't know how to upload it onto the P4NW figure. I mean I have ABSOLUTELY NO CLUE how to do this =/

elgyfu ment www.fineart.sk just a typeo. it's a good site for references of bodies, hands, faces etc. I agree the pictures aren't the highest res though. Pharsyde read the poser4 pro pack manual on applying materials and textures to models. I only have Poser5 or I would give you the page number, sorry. You can also do a search of threads about MAT files and create a MAT that will apply any texture settings that u have to a model. Daz3d.com has a few tutorials on texturing, and creating MAT files. hope it helps.

But the manual is a billion and one pages long LOL...ok lowers head and sighs...I will bite the bullet and read the boring manual =b -Pharsyde

Oye, Pharsyde! You haven't seen the LightWave3D or C4D manuals, have you? ;) Let's see, between LW3D, C4D XL R7, C4D XL R8, and BodyPaint3D module (for R8), that's 9" thick of manuals (!!!). I've neither read all of LW's or BP3D yet. Why are my eyes crossed? :) As always, all things come with time.

Pharsyde ( ) posted Thu, 30 January 2003 at 1:29 AM

OUCH! LOL...well that saying about all things come in time...I agree with that whole heartingly...took me 2 years to master completly all the features of Adobe Photoshop 4.0....though now I am using 7.0 with new things to learn =p... I got Poser 4 Pro Pack as a gift...Mt mother knew I was into 3D animation and creating 3D rendered characters but honestly...I never worked with any type of program that is 3D ever...It was just me and my Adobe Photoshop...I don't know anything about Poser and I am not exactly sure what you do with it other than make 3D models... but other than that...I have no idea what it is capable of doing...I did play arpund (I do mean just play around) with 3Dsmax for a lil while...I am new to not only Poser but everything that is in the 3D art world... BeatYourSoul- all those programs you listed I have NO IDEA what they are...not sure if I need them to be able to make all the beatiful artwork that is featured in this website... I do have a goal though...I want to be able to make 3D fantasy artwork with characters and backgrounds...I want to be able to make elves...monsters...dragons...and the likes...that is my goal...I do not know what I need besides Poser4PP to do this... I went to sites that suggest that using Bryce, 3DsMax, Lightwave, Photoshop are all great programs to use alongside Poser...As I said...Poser4 was a gift that I never asked for nor I knew existed...I do want to know everything I can do with it...I have been reading the manual though I still feel a little in the dark because the manual seems to explain things that a more knowledgable person would understand...This is a whole new world for me and I want to grasp it no matter how long it will take! Thus far I know I need seam guides to make textures for whatever reason....I am trying to learn how to prepare them for using inside Poser...ahh well...it looks like I am going to be a very lost newbie for a long while...I just hope this phase won't be longer than it needs to be =/ back to reading my manual! Perhaps I need to find a Poser Bible like they have the 3DsMax Bible that shows you stp by step all the features within the software and how to use them...That is what I REALLY need! -Pharsyde the Lost

Here are some great tutorials on using photoshop to create skin textures, painting clothing using renders from poser etc. These are tutorials from Daz3d's Arcana web site, but you don't have to buy Daz3d products to use the tutorials. You've mentioned texturing and clothing so I thought I'd send ya a link you might not have seen. Poser can be as simple or as advanced as ya want to use it. Just depends on what kind of art you want to create. hope it helps. Never be afraid to ask for advice, people here help in different areas (just saw the thread "where is the toilet" haha!) I haven't found a Poser Bible per say, all the books on poser I've looked through were rehashes of the manual or just not to my liking, but there are a few books floating around out there. I find Poser tutorials on the web have been best helping me learn Poser (I'm still a newbie myself). hope it helps
