zapper1977 ( ) posted Mon, 17 February 2003 at 8:24 AM · edited Mon, 02 December 2024 at 5:58 AM

Is there a way we could get some room for a Gallery for Sci-Fi work, I was just curious if you people could put up a gallery dedicted to Sci-fi so we could show of artwork that is really Sci-Fi oriented That would be so cool to have a Sci-Fi Gallery all Programs would be honored for like a large Sci-Fi Theme Gallery Just Curious if you all would think that would be feasable ??? zip zap

I'd be in favor of that idea too. Just be sure that it's known up front that it's the artist choice to place a sci-fi image in the sci-fi gallery and not a rule, otherwise you will be begin to hear people complain of "there's a scifi picture in the wrong gallery blah blah blah.." Other than that, I'd love a sci-fi gallery :-)

CryptoPooka ( ) posted Mon, 17 February 2003 at 3:19 PM

And open platform Sci-Fi, too. I'd love to have all the Bryce, Maya, Lightwave, Poser, and other apps in one easy place for viewing and jealous muttering. ;)

ShadowWind ( ) posted Mon, 17 February 2003 at 3:55 PM

I think we should be able to search out all Sci-Fi or any other category we desire in any number of platforms, but I don't think having a gallery specifically for sci-fi, pinups, etc, is a good idea.

We will have people reposting images into these new categories making even more images to look through, not to mention making their galleries look kinda messy.

Under the current system, it should be possible to do what you want with out all that craziness. Just have a genre flag option when you upload an image. Then make a new menu or search that does these genre searches. Then any picture, no matter what platform, could be found using these searches and in essence making a Gallery for whatever category that people want, while still leaving these images in their proper platform galleries.

Course I don't know anything how the system is setup, but I would think this would be easiest for all that are involved...

ShadowWind ( ) posted Mon, 17 February 2003 at 3:57 PM

For instance, if the category is SciFi/Fantasy and then later on you want to break out Fantasy into it's own gallery, people will have to move their images (somehow) to that new gallery where with a genre flag, one could just click [Edit] and change it...

Gorodin ( ) posted Mon, 17 February 2003 at 4:49 PM

ShadowWind has a good point. I spec'd a similar feature for my personal gallery software (... which will probably never get built now... ) I would allow people to choose more than one genre, however...

davo ( ) posted Mon, 17 February 2003 at 5:23 PM

sounds good to me

Flak ( ) posted Mon, 17 February 2003 at 6:38 PM

I also like ShadowWinds idea. As well as the app field on uploaded images, have a genre field as well and do searches on genre or app.

Illusions' idea for a genre, rather than product, classification is definitely a good one. I model across a number of different applications, but usually send pix to the Truespace gallery because that's the app I happen to render in. But how many genres would there have to be? BTW, why isn't there a Povray gallery/forum? Mick.

Anthony Appleyard ( ) posted Tue, 18 February 2003 at 6:14 AM

As long as it is policed to stop it from being swamped by images which are slightly sci-fi but mostly in for sex appeal. Some people like sexy stuff, but to some others sexy stuff is irrelevant clutter to have to wade through. Another useful gallery would be for "Action", i.e. army and police type action in a realistic non-sci-fi context, again so that fans of such images don't have to wade through reams of sexy stuff. It should be possible to classify an image under a genre gallery AND ALSO under a software gallery, e.g. with a Star Trek image that was made using Lightwave.

ShadowWind ( ) posted Tue, 18 February 2003 at 8:52 AM

I don't think Rosity should scrap the current system of galleries by software. I think by adding the genre flag as I mentioned, you will get the best of both worlds and be able to find images by platform, by genre, or maybe even both depending on how it's setup.

I think policing would probably be a function of other members suggesting a move rather than an official policing policy. Where would one draw the line between one genre and the next? A sci-fi scene that is well done, but may have a girl in a tight outfit could be seen as sci-fi by some and a pinup by the other. I can just imagine the arguments that are going to come over that one. I think some degree of tolerance will be necessary as it is now in suggesting what categories (just like what software) to avoid such major arguments. From what I've seen, if a picture is inherently in the wrong category, they are usually asked to move them (a Bryce image in 2D for example) But as long as it relates to the category, it's usually fine and that is probably how it would have to be approached on a genre field too.

Another 2c

It would be useful to be able to put an image into more than one classification at a time. As well as language and genre, as here: for example. some of my Sea Patrol images could be classified as "diving" and also as "army or police type".

Thanks for assisting us with the application. These are very good ideas. We were thinking of allowing the program category and a genre catagory. Will be discussing today and getting prioritized on the programming list. thanks tammy

I guess this is too sexy for some of our pinup-a-phobic members... but seems its not too sexy for the official StarWars website. :) I feel inspired to put pinup scifi just like this in there, and let ya scream :)

I agree Illusions that there should be a switch in the profile, but I think there should also be a link in the gallery menu that sets this for that session. That way people who may usually like to have their images sorted by platform or genre can easily switch to the other mode if they decide they want to for that look through without having to constantly change their profile.

ShadowWind ( ) posted Tue, 18 February 2003 at 8:04 PM

Not even going there on the multiple choice...

Calanthe ( ) posted Fri, 21 February 2003 at 4:12 PM

Being a Science-Fiction fan, I would think this is a good idea, but this gallery is organized othervise. And what is a Science Fiction image? How would you distinguish it from fantasy images of cities, unless there are dragons and unicorns? Or from pure space or surrealistic images? The boundaries of genres are blurred at best, Anne McCaffrey's novels are considered Science Fiction, yet they are talking of dragons. Not to mention the sciencefictiony pinups..Better reconsider.

Just so ya'll know, I haven't given up on wanting the animations to be integrated into the official Art Galleries instead of in the Free Stuff. I do recognize that other things are a priority, however. ;-) Tammy, I appreciate all the hard work you and the rest of the staff are doing! See what a big, positive difference it made when you all accepted my Free Present!

Can you tell me what the animations art gallery would look like? Animated gifs or still shots? we have added a genre called animations within the art gallery. tammy

Bobasaur ( ) posted Wed, 05 March 2003 at 7:11 PM

Ideally, it would look like the other galleries with one critical exception. In the area below the still there would be a clickable link to the animation itself. If you look at the other galleries there's an area for the write-up/credits, etc. The link would be in there. When a viewer clicks the link, the animation would pop up or in a seperate window. After watching the animation, viewers could close the new window and post comments or ratings under the still in the original window. Essentially, it would be a combination of the Gallery and free stuff technologies. Animations coud be hosted elsewhere (like they are now) or perhaps Renderosity could provide server space for a low monthly fee. The main reason for wanting it in the Art Galleries is because that's where people go to look at things. The Art Galleries also have technology for feedback (comments/ratings) that would be nice to have available (for those of us with thick skin [grin]). Although I'm very greatful we've got a spot in the Free Stuff areas, that's not an intuitive location for potential viewers seeking animations.

There have been a number of discussions in the Community Ideas forum and Tutone1234 has been a great help. He probably has more details as far as what's involved on the Bondware side. Thanks for your considering it!
