Subject: Is there a utility making posing easier?

tantrikk ( ) posted Thu, 08 May 2003 at 3:01 PM · edited Sun, 01 December 2024 at 11:06 PM

Does everyone strugggle like I do trying to tweak purchased poses? Have I seen some kind of utility around here that makes posing a bit easier? Thanks a lot, tantrikk

Lol - there's some kind of utility around here that makes posing easier - well ... it's me (giggle)

igohigh ( ) posted Thu, 08 May 2003 at 5:20 PM

You beat me to it Schlabber! My most important utilities today are: for posing I use 'Her Schlabber' for lighting I use 'the Traveler' ;p

hankim ( ) posted Thu, 08 May 2003 at 6:41 PM

Actually, it seems apparent from some of those that know Lightwave or Maya that those apps turn Poser into a no-talent-needed toy :-) With tongue firmly in cheek, hankim

who3d ( ) posted Thu, 08 May 2003 at 6:59 PM

yup - the utility that makes posing easier is Poser 4. On the horizon we have DAZ Studio which may be better for this - or maybe not. Wait and see :)

Poppi ( ) posted Thu, 08 May 2003 at 8:10 PM

omg...this is the last straw in this forum...i'm gonna scream........ you BOUGHT the poses and are having stress about them? some people actually can pose, light, texture, AND create a reasonable background in poser. and, they do it...even though there are so many poser paint by numbers help aids out there. no wonder users of other 3d apps laugh themselves silly when you submit a render to their sites, that is "rendered and "MODELLED" in poser. i don't hate poser...i use it....but, geeze louise...it should not be the 3d equivalent of "tubing". here the clue fairy walks in...self composed....some of us can actually "pose", "light", "texture" and, "animate" our own characters. however, even if you can do none of the above....feel blessed. most likely renderosity will let you do your part in flooding our marketplace with 3 renders a day, as long as you keep on buying those poses. not to be a bitch...but, i had a really wrong day, and this hit my last 1/2 of a nerve. Pop...Pop...Poppi!!!

Just can't wait to check out all your "work". Nice of all of you to take the time from your busy day to answer here.

SWAMP ( ) posted Thu, 08 May 2003 at 10:49 PM

tantrikk,Don't think of it as a struggle, but as a refinement. Pose files free or purchased get your figures close to where you want them to be and most people leave it at that. It's when you take the extra effort, as you are, that makes for a more "realistic"image.I've seen your images before in the gallery, and your "stuggle",as you call it,sets them apart from most of the unnatural stick-up-their-ass looking images found there. Your use of light is among the best I've seen. As far as a utility to help you refine your poses...I know of only one..a mirror. SWAMP

No utility, but I have a coupla tutorials at DAZ Arcana which cover some posing basics and posing with props.

All I know is I depend on Schlabber and a few others great talented people, I love their poses and use them alot. Sharen

Lyrra ( ) posted Fri, 09 May 2003 at 10:45 AM

I use Schlabbers poses as a base and adjust from there. I do some of my own posing, but most of the time I'll leave it to the master, so I can get on with the rest of the image :) Poppi, Might I suggest you go get a cold drink? or go pet the cat for a few minutes? :) you sound a little stressed. No reason to pop off at the poor guy who just asking a question Lyrra

igohigh ( ) posted Fri, 09 May 2003 at 4:53 PM

Poppi, I in no way intended that the 'utilities' I mentioned were for 'tubing'. Like Lyrra and Sharen said, I find one that gets me half way there. I have hardly finished an image with "boxed" poses and lights, almost every one gets altered and sometimes, Spring Garden, for example I pose from scratch using the fine tips that Schlabber and others have provided (also some excellent writings on the subject at RDNA Tantrikk!). Lights are my worst subject, one I am working on now began with one of Traveler's sets but as I have been working it into the scene there is now very little of Traveler's settings left in it. It's kinda like using a drawing or photo to get things started and then mold it from there. And I have spent as much as a month working on a single image; attempting my own textures, lights, poses, and even some crude modeling. But for me, it's mostly hobbie - any aids to get to the end is highly appritiated, and have (and do) love your work as well, ever since the old Fairy Woods day right up to your Pirate Collection I just purchased! ;p Blue Skies & Happy Rendering!

Poppi ( ) posted Fri, 09 May 2003 at 5:29 PM

actually, i have read a couple of anti poser threads that tantrikk participated in in the c4d forum. i responded as i did because i truly felt/feel that he/she posted this message to pull the collective "leg" of the poser community. also, i clicked on the name to im...and, no such member. hummmm....how can that be?

Poppi ( ) posted Fri, 09 May 2003 at 5:31 PM

igohigh...lights give me alot of trouble, too. i'm fine with poses as long as i type in the values instead of just trying to drag my limbs around. i generally render in bryce because i am better with bryce lighting :*(

igohigh ( ) posted Fri, 09 May 2003 at 6:17 PM

I used to import everything into bryce for the same reason untill I saw what others where doing with Poser, now I haven't used bryce aside for making terrians, textures, and skies for some time and now that I have P5 (just about as slow rendering as bryce) I'm determained to get a grasp on it. Besides, I have one bryce project I abandoned cuz it wanted 7 days and 7 nights to render! I was going to make my Elf Soccoress (gallery posting 2 years ago) animate with a 360 turn, the low res test looked great (lights and shadows where awsome) but I just never had the patiance to go the full 7 days without :(

Poppi ( ) posted Fri, 09 May 2003 at 7:28 PM

yeah, bryce is a bear to render in. i bought lightwave, last month....but, am taking it soooo slowly...i'm still trying to memorize the hot keys in the modeller. soooo, looks like i'll be rendering in bryce for a good future time . one 'o these days, right? lightwave has sooo many things it does. and, i am trying to crawl before i walk.

igohigh ( ) posted Fri, 09 May 2003 at 7:35 PM

How do you like Lightwave? It sounds like a very popular modeler. If I get qualified for the schooling aid I'm looking at I may be able to finally purchase a real modeling app, I've been dying to learn and playing here and there with Anim8or and Wings3D.

SWAMP ( ) posted Fri, 09 May 2003 at 7:54 PM

...tantrikk's remarks in the c4d forum are sarcastic "tongue in cheek" pokes at people who put down the use of Poser...(he uses Poser in all his images). ......."and, no such member. hummmm....how can that be?".. Because he quietly, without fanfare, and without "pulling any colletive legs"..removed himself and his few (not three a day)OUTSTANDING images, from this very helpful Renderosity site. SWAMP

Ahh - lol - came back to late (giggle) Actually I have done a tool to ease Poser a bit (well - for me it is allready very easy - but I'm using this for many years now). However - there's a new tutorial in the work - it'll capture a lot more then just the technique of doing poses. I'll try to explain 'how' to make 'speaking' poses - this leads then more to some comic and image - basics. Well, if you don't want that - I'll not doing it ;o). Some words for poses as product: Yes - it is right - poses are easy to make. Finally I'm not working for a pose longer than 15 minutes (if it's a combined one) - the average time of making one pose is around 3-5 minutes. But maybe it's the same for me - then (e.g. Rena) for a texturer - we're just specialists (should I say I really suck in making props ?). I try always (when making a poses-product) to give away more then poses (normally there is a poses-database included in my products) and finally I really hope I found reasonable prices for my poses (If you buy a CD - e.g. - of mine you'll get a few thousand poses). Poppi - I absolutely understand about your POV - I for myself would never buy poses - I would just do them (lol). I can also not understand what is so hard about making a pose - so I try to imagine that I'll help a person saving some time in not starting from a total scratch when doing a pose. About the use of low-quality programs like Poser: Well, it is the result that counts - no more need to say to that (lol). But - well - I allready commented that poses-product as is in that post: http://www.renderosity.com/messages.ez?Form.ShowMessage=1161533

Poppi ( ) posted Sat, 10 May 2003 at 7:34 PM

thanks, Schlabber...you've done some really good stuff for this community. i try to do all that i can by myself...but, i do have some of your poses to use as a basis for my own stuff....i use them and change them, a little here, or there..or alot here or there. they are a starting point. i think this was a bogus question because it read: "any utilities to make premade poses easier?" and, well, the person who posted this thread commented a couple times on the "worth" of poser art..in the c4d forums. also, after i wrote my opiniion, here....i did get a mean comment on my last gallery upload from the author of this thread. oh, well, takes all kinds to make an internet. posing is an art....it takes time, and, even some learning....typing in the variables is a skill that cannot be bought, simply learned. as far as poser being a "low quality" program. i have a number of programs that cost more than poser. i purchased lightwave, last month, since my taxes killed me less than i had expected. poser is down and dirty, and, gets the job done quick, for some of us. apps like lightwave WILL bone, pose, and animate....but....THEY TAKE MORE TIME. time, is money. Pop...Pop...Poppi!!!

Quality is in the eye of the beholder :)

fauve ( ) posted Sun, 11 May 2003 at 8:38 PM

Something I've found to be very useful are "part pose" sets (these are pose sets which are broken down into files for posing specific body parts, like palms, hands, chest, legs, etc.) When I'm doing a pose, often I can get the figure almost to where I want it, but I just can't get that arm or neck or what have you at the correct angle. So then I look through my part-pose sets until I find one that matches or nearly matches what I want, apply it, and tweak from there. It's a huge timesaver. I haven't seen any freebie part-pose sets, but if you look in the Marketplace there are some for sale from Wyrmmaster and WWhitney which are very good. They're not expensive and they've saved my sanity bunches of times when I'm doing custom poses. Posing is one of the more difficult things to do in Poser! This is why we all love and admire Schlabber. ;)

SnowSultan ( ) posted Mon, 12 May 2003 at 12:08 AM

I have a set of 100 free partial poses in Free Stuff here, search for SnowSultan and it should come up. They're not great, but might help. :) SnowS

I do not speak as a representative of DAZ, I speak only as a long-time member here. Be nice (and quit lying about DAZ) and I'll be nice too.

Poppi ( ) posted Mon, 12 May 2003 at 6:17 AM

SnowS....I use yours in almost every one of my mediocre renders. with mirroring, and all they pretty much run the gamut in being helpful as a starting point for almost any pose one can think of.

Same thing Merkynz, I was just pointing to the latest build. I use an older build myself (4.03). I prefer the stable over the newest.
