Subject: How did I screw grayscale up?

As you can see, my grayscale documents have acquired an ugly greenish-blue cast compared to rgb documents. Both docs in this pix are filled with 50% gray. In the grayscale document, when I set the gray value in the Color Picker it looks right, but when I close the color picker the foreground color swatch in the Tools window turns ugly. I don't know how I did this - can someone tell me how to fix it? This PS 7.01. It's gotta be somethin' in PS 'cause grayscale docs look fine in Painter. I already tried re-installing PS, BTW. - Bill

um it sems that you have the slice layer view on perhaps when you hide the slices you will have a complete grey... with no un-wanted cast... also have a look at the proof coulour set up you have... you may have photo shop viewing the greay space in cmyk or something heav a look at the proof set up... perhaps. not dure what you mean by swatch but normally the colour you pick to be your forground will become your foreground...

Maybe the 'monitor' part of the colour settings has some strange foreign monitor selected. My greyscales were all brown once, due to that. But then again, I am on Mac. Maybe someone else has a slightly more helpful answer.

Thanks for your suggestions, ppl. The pix above shows what I mean about the swatch in the tools window not matching the 50% gray that I choose in the color picker. I have color management turned off but I made sure that the correct monitor is selected in the Color Settings dialog anyway. No change. Also, Proof Colors on the View menu is unchecked, BUT if I make a custom Proof Setup and specify "Working RGB - NEC MultiSync FE2111SB" (my monitor) then turn proofing ON, the greyscale image looks correct, however, the color swatch in the tools window still looks like above, so I've a feeling that isn't quite the fix! Thanks again! - Bill Here's what I've found out

hit control H.... or apple key h.... i see you got your little extra help grid up... might wanna get rid if it... see if that works..

yolkworm ( ) posted Tue, 27 May 2003 at 6:56 PM

Sorry, GODspeed, I don't understand your post. According to the V7 ref card, Ctrl+H means "Shows/Hides selection on selected type". Tried it anyway, but made no difference. Thanks, Bill

GODspeed ( ) posted Wed, 28 May 2003 at 10:02 AM

on your post.. the 1st pic... see at the top left corner of each file... has a little grey box.... 01[] ctrl H Shows/hides exztras... liek that little 01[] and grids.. and so forth... goto VIEW-----Extras youll see a CTRL H hot key... but if that didnt work.. i dunno then... if i was in fron of you pc id figure it out in 2secs... =(

Yolkworm,

I tried to get a medium shade of grey using your HEX (808080) and found that PS doesn't like that. It swaps it for 999999 for a lighter match or 666666 to match your darker swatch in your screencap. I can't tell if you have the option "Only Web Colors" checked. Does this happen with different shades of grey??

let us know...
:)

ps
What GODspeed was talking about is the little icon in the upper left of your screen. It's caused by clicking on the SLICE icon in the tool bar and it will stay there (the little icon that is) until you go to VIEW --> SHOW --> SLICES and toggle it off.

yolkworm ( ) posted Thu, 29 May 2003 at 3:46 PM

Thanks for all the suggestions, folks, I really appreciate it. I am running full RGB, now web colors. In my original posting, both windows were filled with 50% gray. The only difference is that one of window is in RGB mode and the other is in Grayscale mode, as you see from the title bars. Yes, it happens with all shades of grey but not black. In the view menu, I've unchecked the Extras item and the little thingy in the upper right corner of the window disappears, but that's the only difference. I also turned off all extras (actually, none were on). Just to be sure I opened the Show Extras Options dialog (View/Show/Show Extras Options...) and unchecked everything (Selection Edges, Target Path, Annotations, Grid, Guides, Slices) but it makes no difference. I've found that if I choose "View/Proof Setup/Monitor RGB" then grayscale images loose the color cast and look correct, but the color swatch in the tools palette and the thumbnails in other palettes (layers, navigator, etc) still have that greenish cast. So I can work ok, but I just hate mysteries like this! - Bill

yolkworm ( ) posted Thu, 29 May 2003 at 9:57 PM

That was the first thing I tried. Didn't clean the registry, tho -- you think I should?

antevark ( ) posted Thu, 29 May 2003 at 10:09 PM

Couldn't hurt, I s'pose.

RHaseltine ( ) posted Fri, 30 May 2003 at 8:12 AM

Have you actually tried re-running Adobe Gamma - funny colour casts are almost always a bad screen profile.

RHaseltine ( ) posted Fri, 30 May 2003 at 8:14 AM

But not if you are using an LCD - Adobe Gamma doesn't work with them, only CRTs.

GODspeed ( ) posted Fri, 30 May 2003 at 8:33 AM

did u Uninstall adobe or just reinstall over it... goto control panel uninstall PS7 this takes every PS file on that cpu OFF.... THEN reinstall... after this you should be promted with a color sceme window the 1st time you run the program.... if you still have a problem after this... i dunno...

RHaseltine ( ) posted Fri, 30 May 2003 at 10:04 AM

You can edit the colour prefs from the Edit menu, and run Adobe Gamma from Control Panel, no need to reinstall for that.

howzit-eksee ( ) posted Mon, 02 June 2003 at 12:29 PM

hmmmm, this is a vexing one!!!! im not sure if this post will help. i see that you are using a pc. on a mac you can run coloursync utility, kinda like a disk utility but for all the colour gammas and profiles and all that good stuff on the entire machine. it will tell you that x number of profiles over time have shifted and need to be repaired. click ok and it repairs it all for you. check if your pc has a similar utilty and run it. you will be shocked at how much things get damaged! if it does not solve the problem at least all yor profiles will be as good as new.

RHaseltine ( ) posted Mon, 02 June 2003 at 1:05 PM

Unfortunately, and despite promises, no version of Windows yet includes any profile generating software. Adobe Gamma (not Gamma Loader) is an on-screen, by-eye monitor calibration and profiling utility, similar to what I believe Colorsync does. There are other, similar, tools (Powerstrip(?) or Wizzywig by Praxisoft) available as free-or shareware.

yolkworm ( ) posted Mon, 02 June 2003 at 10:28 PM

Thanks for all the suggestions, ppl. Re the re-install questions, I uninstalled, rebooted and then re-installed. I'm a bit dubious about the gamma issue. If the monitor gamma were wrong, then how come the two color swatches in my second pix are different? To get that picture I used the color chooser to set a 50% gray, OKed it, then opened it again to take the screen shot and to show that the gray swatch in the color picker is correct, but the one in the tools palette is not. But, nevertheless, I fooled around with the RGB gammas using Adobe Gamma and sure enough, I can get the gray fill in my document and the tool palette color swatch to look gray. But then, all the other grays (e.g., inactive title bars) which looked correct before, now look wrong! This really has me baffled. I guess nobody from Adobe reads the forum, eh? Thanks again, Bill

"I have color management turned off but I made sure that the correct monitor is selected in the Color Settings dialog anyway." How do I select the "correct moniter", where is the monitor profile? Color settengs dialog? :O(

retrocity ( ) posted Tue, 03 June 2003 at 11:29 AM

Phily,

yes, if you want to poke around, look in the EDIT --> COLOR SETTINGS menu and in the dialog box select the dropdown menus from the Working Spaces segment. You'll find various printers and monitor.

I found it Retrocity, thanks. I'll post my problem in a new thread, I don't want to mess up yolkworms thread.
