Subject: HELP! I REALLY NEED SOME CHILDREN!

JettBoy ( ) posted Sun, 27 July 2003 at 8:31 AM · edited Tue, 24 December 2024 at 10:37 PM

No, I'm NOT some sicko pervert. Being a working-poor artist/illustrator/graphic designer, I usually cannot afford the services of a model. That's where Poser comes in so handy; I do all of the pre-production posing, lighting, staging, etc. in advance using Poser as a 'sketch' tool and add the fine detail in the final painted illustration. Shaves hours and hours off of my work time.

Problem is, I just accepted a commission for a series of about 8-10 children's book illustrations. Hiring a child model is so expensive it would cut my profit margin by almost half, and the children figures that come stock with Poser 4 are...not very good.

Actually, I could probably work with the stock Poser children IF I could find some clothing, props, hair, etc. for them. Barring that, I could consider buying some aftermarket Poser children if the price was reasonable (again with the 'poverty-stricken working artist' thing). Any suggestions?!

Aside from the usual way of squiring offspring ;0), have you considered Daz3D's Millenium Kids? They're not that inexpensive, but surely less expensive than hiring a model. Should be tons of clothing, props, hair, etc. for them. I'm certain that it would eat into profits, but consider this "expenses". Maybe you could get some compensation for the investment (?). Search for "flute" in freestuff here. If it's still up, it was a free pose that turned Vicki 2 into a child. It'll show you how to change the figures you already have into kids.

The one-time investment of the Millennium Kids, which can be used over and over, would be an asset to your business. You could probably write it off on your taxes, since you're using it as "work supplies." Any of the Vicki and Mike hair will work on the kids with a little scaling and repositioning. There are some free clothes out there, albeit not very much. Unfortunately, the kids have been sadly neglected in Poser. Serge Marck made several things for the Mil Girls (although I don't think his stuff is for commercial use, but you could write him and ask), and PoserWorld has some great things for both the girls and the boys (which are for commercial use to members). If you're doing this for a living, it's expected that you'll be making purchases for the business. It might be something to consider. Melanie

If you must buy get the Daz MM girls, forget, repeat FORGET the MM boys! Then get the Lit'l ones from Capsces here in the market place, with her morph package you can do pre-school to Teens boys and girls, all the stuff made for the MM boys which is very little, with the exception of Poserworld will fit the MM girls with, a little tweaking.

Some artists do far more with children and some have their own websites where you can see what they have done. Somd of them have free downloads. The trick is to find their websites. Also, other Poser links, have free stuff that you can check out.

Oh yes, go with the Millenium Kids. I do some childrens book illustration myself, and use the Millenium PreSchool Girl for most of my illos (granted, I use custom morphs and such, but still the base material is the MilGirl). Check out my gallery for other examples of how I use the MilGirls in my work. Both "The lure of the temptress", "Sophie with cat" and "Sophies Trunk" are made with the MGirl. :) -Hanz

ditch the Evil Poser 4 twins ... theres almost nothing out for them. At least the Milkids can use Victorias hair and textures, and clothing with a little fiddling.

spurlock5 ( ) posted Sun, 27 July 2003 at 1:35 PM

I remember seeing a utility somewhere for converting the DAZ(Zygote) hair for the millenium woman to ones that can be used by the millenium girls but I don't remember where I saw it.

Considering that you can turn Victoria III into a man (really a eunuch), it looks like there would be some way to use the Figure Height setting in Poser with the Body Morphing Pack and Male Morph Pack to produce a version of her at each age. That way, you could use the same texture for the same character at different ages. I've seen the results of the figure height changes(really freaky)but with the control of the morphing, it looks like there would be some common procedure for producing the character at different ages. It can't be that simple.

If you are using V3 the following will set up a teenager. Best place on the entire net for our little friends is FaerieWylde .. there are freebie characters (mostly based on the Daz MilGirl mesh), clothes, poses, backgrounds, faerie stuff, links galore, and a bucket-load of talented artists and modellers. Course, a lot of the stuff is for non-commercial use only, but I'm sure if you spoke with the various contributors, you should be able to come to some amicable agreement.

JettBoy ( ) posted Sun, 27 July 2003 at 3:19 PM

Thanks all for the suggestions. I may end up purchasing the Millenium Girls at some point. They look great, but that's probably much more detail than I actually need to set up a sketch. Most of the paid illustration work I do is traditional hand work (3D-computer stuff is a lot of fun, but most of my clients want the old school type illustration using paint, brushes, etc.). I'll most likely just use the stock Poser children and add all the necessary details; clothing, hair and such, in the painting process.

Go to Rubio's Room... she has turned the P4 girl into a nice young lady with a decent dress. Jackie's site has some kid-clothes, too. You'll have to ask for permissions for commercial use, but at least you'll be starting with free/inexpensive models. Also, you might be able to get Poser 5 for less than the cost of the Millkids and their stuff. Will and Penny don't look bad... and can be used in p4. Carolly

Wow, nice nickedshield! Do you have a pose/character file to make all of these settings? :) What Poser needs is "morph injection" files that you just type in the correct channel names/settings to be changed and run it on the required figure. 'Twould be much simpler (believe it or not). Kuroyume
