THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: OT XP questions

Nukeboy ( ) posted Wed, 20 August 2003 at 5:32 PM · edited Mon, 25 November 2024 at 8:18 PM

Greetings All, Gad, I've been so busy that I won't get a chance to do a challenge (going to Minneapolis on Sunday for a week on business). Anyway, two issues in XP; one, I'm running the Home edition and I am the "administrator", however, I just tried installing some software and was told, "You have insufficient administrative rights to install this software. Please contact your system administrator" Huh? I am he. #2, although I am constantly asked if I want a password memorized, they never are. Services are all set to default, Explorer is set to remember, etc. But it ain't happening. Any ideas?

LOL...I have XP and don't have those problems, maybe you should check your Internet Options for Explorer, you may have to turn that option on...as far as insufficient administrative rights.....I am stumpted....Sharen

catlin_mc ( ) posted Wed, 20 August 2003 at 6:00 PM

For your second Q you must have told it no at some point because after that it won't ask again and it won't memorize them. Only thing you could do is reinstall XP but that's a lot of bother. I did that one time and lived to regret it, too many passwords to remember, to many places to put them = a lot of typing. Your first Q I'm going to have to think about 'cos I'm using professional and they are slightly different. Catlin

Nukeboy ( ) posted Wed, 20 August 2003 at 6:00 PM

I'd like to go back to 98, and the OS, too. :-)

SAMS3D ( ) posted Wed, 20 August 2003 at 6:05 PM

Actually I did think about it, the second question can be done in the Internet Options area....I just have to find it. You must have turned it off. Let me go look for you. Sharen

Nukeboy ( ) posted Wed, 20 August 2003 at 6:05 PM

I talked to the "Admin" at work, and she's stumped too. I get the "do you want to save your password, blah, blah, blah, but it doesn't remember them. As for a re-install, this is my laptop with pre-installed XP. to reinstall would mean wiping everything out... not my first choice. Fortunately, this is only a minor inconvenience and probably for my own good. It's just that this IS a laptop and it never leaves my side. I'm just curious about these XP "features"...

Nukeboy ( ) posted Wed, 20 August 2003 at 6:07 PM

Oh, and Catlin and Sharen; everything that I could find to enable, disable, turn on or off, I've tried. I'm thnking it's some deep-rooted thing that only gurus are aware...

Found it, for your second question Go to your internet options in your explorer window....then click the content tab, then click AutoComplete in the personalized window, then in the new little window put a check mark in the User Names and passwords. Tadaaaaa....Sharen

SAMS3D ( ) posted Wed, 20 August 2003 at 6:13 PM

Oh, Oh, Oh, I think I know the answer to the first question, this actually happened to us....first is the software compatable with Windows 2000 or XP? If not you let me know and I can show you how to fix it, then it won't ask you that silly question. Sharen

Nukeboy ( ) posted Wed, 20 August 2003 at 6:15 PM

Dang, thought you had it there, Sharen, but no joy. I just went there and every box is checked... I'm getting really confused. I might have to resort to alcohol....

catlin_mc ( ) posted Wed, 20 August 2003 at 6:16 PM

Sharen, I'm so impressed I didn't know you were a XP guru..........8)

Nukeboy ( ) posted Wed, 20 August 2003 at 6:17 PM

Cross posted with you Sharen, the software I'm trying to install probably is pre-XP, although I had no problems with Bryce...

SAMS3D ( ) posted Wed, 20 August 2003 at 6:24 PM

Don't put the check mark in the promt me to save passwords, have it just like I do.... Cat....LOL...I play with these silly little toys during the day, I train people on Windows OS, all of them from the oldy Windows 3.1 to XP....not to technical just the OS and error messages....I kind of know the techniques of these OS's and lots of other software....

SAMS3D ( ) posted Wed, 20 August 2003 at 6:25 PM

Oh yes and don't forget to say apply then okay. Sharen

SAMS3D ( ) posted Wed, 20 August 2003 at 6:26 PM

Now as far as you other question, find the set-up file to your software and right click and go to properties, it should give you the option to have it conform to Windows 2000, check that and it should work. Sharen

Nukeboy ( ) posted Wed, 20 August 2003 at 6:42 PM

Cool. I'll try that. You gals/guys are great!

catlin_mc ( ) posted Wed, 20 August 2003 at 6:46 PM

Gals Nukeboy...............8)

Nukeboy ( ) posted Wed, 20 August 2003 at 7:57 PM

Didn't want to be sexist :-) (with all the cross posting, I incorrectly assumed that some guy might pop in... well, you know what they say about assuming.) But, still no soap. Sharen, your suggestion worked, although I still got the admin error, the software did install. I still can't get passwords to save or be remembered. Ah, me. Anybody been to Monticello, Minnesota? I'm leaving on Sunday and will be there 'til Friday...

bikermouse ( ) posted Thu, 21 August 2003 at 5:01 AM

Nukeboy, You might have to enter safemode on a reboot to set adm rights but try logging off and log back on as owner. If that doesn't work let me know and I'll try to see if I can figure out/remember what I did to solve that adm problem. BTW: Did you save the link I listed in this forum a while ago to winxpnews? if not I'll dig it out of my favorites for you. The moderator there can answer this one for sure. -TJ

I'm not sure, but I think the passwords are stored in cookies. When I delete my cookies I have to log in to Renderosity manually again. When I leave the renderosity cookies, but delete everything else I log in automatically. So if you have an automatic cookie deleting option somewhere that could be what's causing the need for a manual password input.

My cookie based passwords (i.e. Renderosity) work just fine. It's the other passwords, like on-line banking, etc. that aren't being saved. What's also weird is that autocomplete works in windows explorer (like when I type in a file name to save) but not in inernet explorer. Just plain weird.

catlin_mc ( ) posted Thu, 21 August 2003 at 9:43 AM

No, that can't be so Rayraz 'cos I delete all cookies and internet rubbish every time I come offline and my user name and passwords are always intact the next time I log on. Catlin

Rayraz ( ) posted Thu, 21 August 2003 at 9:45 AM

I use ME. Maybe ME us different with that, or maybe I deleted something else and I fogot about it.

Same thing applys to me like Catlin....I use XP also, but I have used ME and it worked the same.

unclebob ( ) posted Thu, 21 August 2003 at 10:10 AM

ahhhh Nukeboy ... some light on the subject. I have XP home and when I go to a "secured" sight .. ie: my banking..I don't get asked to "save password" even though it is on and does show up on other sites (non-secured) like 'Rosity. It could be something there. Try going into TOOLS->Internet Options->Security and try Default OR go through the options Custom Level and see what you have checked and what level you have selected and/or hit reset, to return to default. Sorry if you have already gone through these steps, just trying to help.

Incarnadine ( ) posted Thu, 21 August 2003 at 12:04 PM

regarding the admin rights issue, are you logged in as a user or as the admin when you try to install? (ie do you have separate login/access/passwords?) I haven't put XP in my machine yet but this is the way my Linux side of the box works.

Pass no temptation lightly by, for one never knows when it may pass again!

Nukeboy ( ) posted Thu, 21 August 2003 at 2:46 PM

I'm logged in as the computer administrator. I even created bogus accounts for me to "administer". I think it was just that particular software, I'll probably never know why. As for the password thing, I do get the "save password" prompt, even on secure sites, it just doesn't retain them. I'll take bikermouse's advice and check out winxpnews.

Nukeboy,
here's a link to the winxpnews site in case you need it.
