Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 14 12:36 pm)
If you didn't like the interface, why did you buy it? You could have purchased a CAD program if you wanted sterility of ugly and barren boxes. All of the Metacreation's lineup has/had artistic, friendly, curvaceous, soft, gooey, interfaces all the way along their development cycle... at least a decade! A screen shot with the interface appears on the back of the box, in case you are new to Poser. Carolly
For the most part I have liked the Kai or Kai inspired interfaces. The ones that work and make sense, anyway, like Bryce. Poser's was fine when the capabilities of the program were fewer and the meshes and textures smaller and the demands on the video card less (yes, I know Poser doesn't use OpenGL but the video card still handles the screen display). But now the interface just gets in the way. Our pictures are larger..we need more space. All the doodads are just clutter now. They need to be cleaned up and organized. The doodads don't help the workflow one iota. And, it IS slow. Especially Poser 5. Poser 4 is still okay, even Propack. But Poser 5 is abominable for working speed. What bothers me the most is that Curious Labs is working with Poser 5 as their new base. They should simply scrap it as an idea that was too early. The interface should have been worked on FIRST instead of tacking on the new features.
What is wrong with the interface - you can arrange everything the way you like and I cannot say that it is slow on XP. I use XP Pro and P5 is as fast as ProPack.
Installing all the update patches might be a good idea and maybe optimizing XP and cleaning it with XP antispy could help as well.
I prefere P5 over Poser 4/ProPack and I like that I can use subfolders and seperate Runtimes.

I run a very clean XP machine. I know what I'm doing. I had Poser 4, Poser 4/Propack, and Poser 5 all at once so it was easy to compare them. And Poser 5 is much much slower than the others at screen refreshing, changing 'rooms' and coming back from renders. (BTW, ProPack is slower at these things than Poser 4, but not as much slower as Poser 5 compared to Propack.) Besides which the Poser 4 renderer in Poser 5 is slower as well. I like the Poser 4 renderer for certain things. When I raytrace, I usually go to Bryce. Re-arranging things is simply not good enough. This goes for Poser 4 as well as Poser 5. Now that we have faster machines and larger monitors, squeezing our test renders into the interface is getting tiresome. I have several interface dots saved for various workflows, but it should be much better. Oh yes, I love the subfolders and separate runtimes. No question about that, which is one of the few things Poser 5 did right.
Ranting about how bad Poser5 is without telling us anything about the machine you're runing it on doesn't help much. How fast is the processor? How much memory do you have? What do you have running in the background while using poser? Which characters are you using? Do you have the latest SR installed? You know important details like that can go a long way helping us to help you speed up poser.
This goes on - telling people who speak out negatively on Poser 5 that "they can speed up Poser", and the same ol' plug for how good Poser 5 is and it's "all the user's fault for buying it." (What, pray, are they to buy instead?) Gimme a break, and cut the original poster some slack. What Spit said is 100% correct. Poser 5 is significantly slower than Poser 4 / Propack ON THE SAME MACHINE, under the same conditions, each and every time you load it. Ergo the problem is with the creators of the code, not the user, not with the computer and not with the OS. Can you spend money to upgrade your system so as to get your performance back? Yes, but only if 2 conditions prevail: 1. You initially had a very slow machine with little memory - say 1GHz, 256MB on Win98/ME - and you upgrade to the latest and greatest P4 or AMD system with a very fast CPU AND a fast FSB AND 512MB or better memory AND Win2K or XP; and 2. You never install Poser 4 / Propack on your new system for a back-to-back comparison :-) IMO, outcha is correct, the UI design - at least those changes done by CL as against MetaCreations - are one of the 2 primary reasons for the slow down. Memory (mis-)usage is the other.
Hey ouatcha - If you're running XP try turning off the fancy curved windows and scrolling interfaces in your windows/properties. Those are useless anyway and slow the whole machine down for more than just Poser but Poser doesn't work well with those UI enhancements. Also switch on fast tracking. I sometimes have to switch down to ctrl-8 smooth poly preview mode when I have large scenes. BTW Max will make you do the samething. You can't load up huge environments and preview them fully textured with any decent speed.
For a change I didn't give any opinion about how good or bad poser5 is & I'm not going to now either. All I was trying to get across in my post was that there are lots of reasons why poser5 is slow apart from sloppy programming & if he's trying to run it on a 200Mhz P1 it'll be slow, but of course only he knows what machine he's using as HE DIDN'T TELL US!!! Oh yeah I have to agree with you layingback Poser5 is slower than Poser4 but even that slows down more with all the fancy stuff running in XP.
Be more specific. You know, all this yakking about 'fancy stuff running in XP' is really misleading. Most of the stuff has no effect whatsoever on Poser. ControlPanel:System:Advanced:Performance Settings Button:VisualEffects tab The ones I recommend disabling for Poser are: Fade or slide menus into view Fade out menu items after clicking Show shadows under menus Smooth edges of screen fonts The last is the most important overall for any machine. The rest such as Fading Tooltips in the list don't even apply to Poser. Even those I listed don't make much of a difference at all on my machine (2gz with a GEForce 3). As for Fast Tracking. Yes, don't use it in Poser 5. Which just proves my point. I use Fast Tracking in ProPack...no problemo. But it's molasses in Poser 5.

sorry all there but i'm just fed up with poser5 and its dumb graphic interface. well some here might find it stylish but its sllloooooooooooooooooooooooow. click and wait 20sec and click and wait and NEVER! click somewhere else cause poser will lost itself in the many tasks on your winXP.... slow slow.. plus lots of empty spaces.. sometimes i'm just mad waiting and bang a big crash and you just have to redo you work again and again don't talk me about a professional gui on poser 5 !! (talk me about lightwave or photoshop for instance) sorry about the bad mood post but !! argggggggggggggggggggg ; )
