Subject: Thoughts on S3 petite so far...

So far, she is a nice addition to my tools - but I can't see that she will replace V3 as the character base of choice. Not only do I have all the chothing and so on for V3 already (and hair, and morphs and so on) but it doesn't look like she gives me anythign totally unique. I had been holding off using V3 for a petite character I was workign on, hoping S3 would make the job significantly easier - but I don't like her shape enough and she doesn't seem to have as many morphs available (yes, I have the morph packs). So, I have one set of clothes for her, and some hair and that looks like it will be about it - I don't think I will build a new wardrobe and so on for her. I think you Daz did a great job with her - but I think there is probably only room for one "top dog" model to invest my resources in... and S3 isn't enough to take the title so far. We'll see. BTW - in the image below S87992 is my character in progress. No custom morphs, all tweeking the V3 dials and scaling her to 95%.

Puntomaus ( ) posted Wed, 24 December 2003 at 3:34 AM

The character you are working on looks nice, especially her face.

I think it would have been nice if Steph could take Vicki's wardrobe, like it was with the old Stephanie. Or if they would add an update to the available V3 clothes, if that is possible.

And since Anton isn't at DAZ anymore sigh ... :-(.

I agree with Puntomaus, I really dislike the morhing fantasy dress....no body handles since Anton is working for them any more! Whah!!

I've got the morphing fantasy dress for V3 and I don't want to have to buy another one especially for Stephanie. 8(

Thanks for the kind words. I have tried to respond three times now and the thought of the whole thing is just so depressing I am going to keep this short. It means so much to me when I see that someone out there understands what I was trying to accomplish with my work. Thanks and I think Soulhuntre's character V3 petite looks wonderful. It speaks volumes. -Regards, Anton

I e come to this forum because I got a mail by DAZ stating they have a new character, Stephanie3 "petite". I took a good look, compared with V3, and the numbers of poly's is identical. They claim, and why shouldn't this be true, that the UV maps are the same so all textures etc can also be used. Sounds good. But: 1/ What is the advantage this mesh offers? Soulhuntre says that there are less morphs that with V3? 2/ Making a "petite" character from V3 is possible, and not that difficult: make it between 90 and 95% tall, and make the head a bit bigger, so you get a 7 1/2 head character instead of an 8 header, (number of heads that goes into the total length of the figure), adapt length of legs etc... 3/ The main problem with V3: the armpit being too high, is not solved. (This probably cannot be solved due to technical problems with the incredibly complex set of muscles that join the arm to the torso.) So, without wanting to be negative (I really find the DAZ' figure meshes the sole survival of Poser, and, working in 3D I say hats off to their results): what are S3 Petite's advantages? Why do we "need" her?

I have tried prudent planning long enough. From now I'll be mad. (Rumi)

A: Companies need new products to generate revenue and people want something new to play with. many people do not turn body dials. The armit problem is solvable without JCM. Poser figure design just has to change.

Anton: Release him here and show DAZ how it's done, or, dude, quit griping about it. It's that old 'put up or shut up' thing. Either do it right or quit griping about how everyone else is doing it wrong. He looks great, from what I can see. Might I possibly see more of him? In any event, good luck with what you do in the future and happy holidays. *hugs Anton* Okay: Stephie Petite, the why of it: Simply, V3 cannot (And I speak from experience) do actual petite characters without a LOT of dial twisting, and then you get deformations you have to work with, ETC. I put Stephanie Petite into Extreme Morph and had a character I'd been wanting for YEARS within a few moments.

Anton, your insight is always appreciated :) I haven't bought S3P yet so I really need to someone to give me some info. A while back, DAZ3D released a brokered figure called Jamie which was based off of V3, only she was just scaled down and had only a few morphs. So has anyone looked to see how Jamie stacks up against S3P? Just based upon your experience, this is what I need to know: 1. Is S3P worth buying? 2. I expect the body morphs to be different from V3, but do V3's head morphs work on S3P? I know that V3's textures work on S3P so that will not be a problem. BTW, happy holidays everyone. I hope everyone has some time to relax and enjoy the season.

AlleyKatArt ( ) posted Wed, 24 December 2003 at 4:28 PM

Papa: The morphs work, but you'd need something like Morph Manager to transfer them. Steph's got different channels. Body morphs seem to inject, things like the Male Morphs obviously don't work very well due to the breast size change, but otherwise, Steph's a dream. She has the issue ALL the mil gals have at the base of the arm, where bicep meets tricep, that little triangle of pokiness, but that's the ONLY issue I've seen. Her shoulders bend better than V3's, too. Steph may never replace V3 in temrs of sheer clothing, but she's quickly becoming my favorite.

"lol....how long did it take you to render your pic soulhunter?"

I just re-ran the render to check. At 850 pixels wide it took 3:00 minutes to the second (from CTRL+R till the render progress box went away).

Some other scene stats...

  • Steph 3 has all her face/body morphs injected
  • Other than text, that image is how it came from the renderer, all figures were loaded
  • Glam Vicki is "stock"
  • Mike 3 is "stock"
  • The two Vickies on the right each have all face and body morphs injected
  • All the girls are running the Daz Hi Rez textures
  • Mike is running his Daz Hi rez texture
  • There are 30 lights (it's a daz complex global) cause thats the best way for me to see stuff
  • Firefly
  • NO shadows

NoteL It might actually be able to be done faster on this box, I didn't shut down my production environment so I have photoshop, outlook, a bunch of browsers and premier open so I don't think I have all my ram available for Poser.

The box isn't all that special. It's a 2.8ghz P4 with HT and 1 gig ram from Maingear; pretty stock for 3D work these days.

soulhuntre ( ) posted Wed, 24 December 2003 at 5:21 PM

Anton, that figure looks awesome. Your model?

"Simply, V3 cannot (And I speak from experience) do actual petite characters without a LOT of dial twisting, and then you get deformations you have to work with, ETC."

I would be happy to look at any examples of this. I am still willing to base my character on SP if it will help but I just don't see it at the moment. Of course, I am going to be rigging her in another tool for this project so the deformation problem isn't much of an issue ... but we will be using all dynamic clothing so that's not a killer either.

Again, I like her new look but why SP over a 90% scaled Vicky?

Someone, please, enlighten me!

AlleyKatArt ( ) posted Wed, 24 December 2003 at 5:26 PM

Okay, say you've scaled her legs down. Now, ideally, on V1/2, you could just scale down the thighs with no issue. Well, you cannot do that with V3. It breaks the mesh around her knee too much to do so. You scale down her shoulders because you want them more narrow, you get another break along the seam to her arm. You scale down her waist, her hips jut out too much. Scale down her her neck/up her head? More minor breaking. Take a good look. I don't have time to post examples now. And Anton, you weren't griping, but you were coming close, cutie. ;)

Attached Link: http://www.maingear.com

The machien comes from a company called Maingear. They are pretty much a competator to Alienware. The parts are pretty generic but they tend to pick the faste ones :) It's about 4 months old. As for V3 obviously if you scale her body parts to different sizes you'll get breakage... hell you would get that with SP as well. If you go to V3 and scale her "body" to 90% you are a long way there... and you can make a pose to do the same to clothing. So aside from size... what are the advantages? I am REALLY trying to understand here :)

dialyn ( ) posted Wed, 24 December 2003 at 8:44 PM

You can change the proportions, but just shrinking her 90% is not going to make enough of a difference. There is a good product example by Jackie Lewin on the Marketplace here that has height morphs for Michael 3 and Vicky 3. If you take a look at waht Jackie has done, you'll see that the petite woman is not just a shrunken Vicky. I am short, but my chest, waist, hips are all the same as that of a taller woman....my legs and arms are shorter. Some people, like Jim Burton, have figured out some proportions for smaller women that work pretty well. Stephanie is not only shorter, but she has a slight, slimmer build from what I've seen. That adds another dimension to the character that wouldn't look lifelike if you simply changed the scale. I'm not explaining this very well, but I assure you that being short is not simply being 90% of someone else, anymore than being tall makes you 110% of someone else.

A couple of early observations on S3 -- Hands and Feet are WAY to large. WyrmMaster's Veronica Vixen's deformers work on her and her clothing!! The breasts get messed up (deflated), but they can be fixed. VV SP3 on the left, Standard SP3 on the right.

The only major gripe I have with her so far are the hands and feet and the fact that her head just looks squished width-wise to me. Anyone else think her head is too narrow? Whenever I've been working with her I've been scaling her head to 102% on the X. I am kinda disappointed at the amount of morphs for her as well. Laurie

PapaBlueMarlin ( ) posted Thu, 25 December 2003 at 10:09 AM

The amount of morphs for M3 compared to V3 was a problem as well as Anton contributed much of what went into the V3 head pack but not for M3. Just curious, but did anyone compare S3P to the Jamie character brokered by 3D Universe at DAZ?

bijouchat ( ) posted Thu, 25 December 2003 at 10:10 AM

S3 buttocks and groin are finally improved however. V3 had similar buttock issues as her predecessor V1/2. I've posted a lot of renders at PoserPros illustrating the improved bendability of the thigh area. http://www.poserpros.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=20975 I think comparing Steph Petite to a vast collection of Jim Burton characters is slightly unfair. Put her up against a stock V3 instead, like I have. And yes, the proportions of the characters are very different, S3 is not just a small V3, she's actually reproportioned and stands about 6.5 heads tall, as opposed to V3 who is nearly 8 heads high. Jim's characters are nice, but they are also supermodel/fashion doll proportions too. Fine if you like that kind of thing... its not my taste. Stephanie Petite works very well for me, and fixes the one thing (buttocks, groin) that has nagged me for years with Vicky. Average women are between 6-7 heads high, 8 heads is supermodel/heroine proportions. go here if you want to learn something about proportion. http://www2.evansville.edu/drawinglab/body.html

Aeneas ( ) posted Fri, 26 December 2003 at 4:26 PM

The "ideal" figure is 8 heads tall. Hero proportions can go up to nine heads, and more. But A very good and realistic set of proportions was developed in the nineteenth century by great anatomists like Paul Richer. This figure is based on a 7 1/2 heads canon. As Khrys wrote, it is not sufficient to make the head a bit bigger: you have to adapt all proportions, and therefore you need other apps than Poser (Lightwave, Cinema4D etc) because you will have to tweak the complete mesh. I find Khrys' arguments very sound, and I probably will buy SP the moment I can afford the investment. For me also, Vicky is too "ideal". I only have to be shure that the textures I have bought for V3 will fit SP also.

I have tried prudent planning long enough. From now I'll be mad. (Rumi)

Aenaes... the V3 textures fit SP too :) 7.5 is good for men, but women are smaller. 8 heads tall is an ideal male, that's correct. But 8 heads on a female... that's fashion doll proportions. Hardly any woman is approaching 8 heads tall, unless she's RuPaul. ;)

LaurieA ( ) posted Fri, 26 December 2003 at 7:38 PM

Well, in art class I was taught 8 heads for a male and 7 to 7 and a half heads for a female.

8 is ideal, 7.5 is ideal for a female, but not the average actual proprtion for a woman (Victoria is taller than 7.5) but hardly any live woman is eight heads high (Victoria)... follow the link I provided and it explains that 8 heads on a male looks 'right' to the eye, but its not the actual average. If you are looking to make people that are more the average, and less ideal, then serious reproportioning is in order for most Poser characters, and you have to do it the whole body down. M3 is also heroic proportions. You put the ideal characters against a real person, and they look like a character, even with the best photorealistic textures. Wrong proportion kills photorealism pretty well. Great for comic book style though. I'm not into that. I like them to look more average in proportion, with body fat, natural bodies and faces. I don't want fashion models and too perfect people, its not in the style I want for myself. I learned 8+ heads for a female for fashion illustrations, yes, I took art courses also... Gee, you'd think some people would be happy that Steph Petite is more realistic with all the bitching I hear about Poser characters (especially Daz characters) never being realistic enough in anatomy. We finally get one and people arent happy with it either... No pleasing some people I guess. shrugs, walks away to continue morphing her
