Topic says it - I just added a new tutorial to my web page. Realistic lighting easy and fast!

This picture contains exactly zero light sources! All done with the probelight node.

Great, Stewer! I've been trying to figure out what this Probelight thing was, but so far with little luck! Now I can read about it :o)

Let me know if the tutorial and the program work for you - I'm not fully sure if everything is coming across properly.

Literata ( ) posted Thu, 01 January 2004 at 9:39 AM

I've got one question: In the output from the 'probelight' program, it lists three values for each Lxx parameter; which one do we set the corresponding node value to? For example, when I go to set the L00 parameter in my node, I look at the output from probelight (using the kitchen probe): L_[0,0] 6.407946 6.751895 7.296709 I'm not sure which number I need to use, or if I should be doing some kind of summing, &c. Thanks!

Literata ( ) posted Thu, 01 January 2004 at 9:41 AM

Doh -- the node parameter takes THREE values... Sorry about that :)

Literata ( ) posted Thu, 01 January 2004 at 10:02 AM

Hi again -- Would you mind listing the settings (ball texture, ground texture, light probe used, &c) on that final image in your tutorial? I'm able to follow the tutorial fine, but just can't make the jump to that last image! Thanks

The light probe is the one used in the last step of the tutorial, kitchen_probe.float, and the lightprobe is plugged in the ball's Alternate_Diffuse like in the very beginning. Don has the same material, except that his skin textures are plugged in the lightprobe's Surface_Color. Both Don and the ball have pretty much the materials that were used in the tutorial before. The floor has no lighbprobe node, it's just a tiles node plugged into the Ambient_Color (with Ambient_Value set to 1). The pattern comes from a cloud node that's plugged into the tile's colors.

ey kewl man! the Calculus i took in college was retarded Calculus i.e. Business Calculus....but i'll try tha follow that Stanford paper anyway....but of course um gonna play around with that probelight thingy.... =)

It's definitely weird. Maybe PoserShade6 will have the logical culmination of this - a "glow" channel that allows objects to emit light and cast shadows, which I suppose Shade 7 and most other 3D apps already have.

I accidently used Photoshop 5 LE to save the PNG file for that tutorial, IE was unable to show it properly. I resaved that file from Fireworks, it should show up correctly in IE now. -Stefan, not having used IE for ages.

Stew, would it be possible to post those Values for the Probe Lighting??? I tried downloading the files. They have a GZ extension and neither WinZip nor WinRar will open them for me. Cheers DR I tried this one. The cylinder and miki have Probe Lights. All normal lights are turned off. I didn't notice that you added Skin Shaders.

Winzip should be able to open gz files thought. Have you tried associateing Winzip with them? (or Open With...?)

I was using PowerArchiver to unpack .gz files, but WinZip should do it just as well. If you're really lucky, your web browser will automatically unpack .gz while downloading it (I think Safari on the Mac does). The values I used in the example should be the ones in the screenshot on the web page.
