Subject: Transparent Planes

Hdrider ( ) posted Wed, 30 August 2000 at 8:22 PM · edited Mon, 25 November 2024 at 3:14 AM

Hello, I am trying to use transparent planes and image files for some background stuff in Vue3 to cut down on polygon count. Problem: The planes aren't completely transparent. I'm getting a faint blue fringe. Anyone know the cure for this or is it just the nature of the beast? Thanks, hdrider

Goto Atmosphere, Sky and Clouds, Sky tab, double click the color pane on top. now you can choose from a variety of colors for the sky plane. when rendering I can get a perfectly empty white sky. Hope this is the problem's solve. Harry

Global Transparency should be set to 100% Variable Transparency should be turned on. In your Transparency Map, make sure that all transparent areas are completely white. Fade Out should be set to 0% (totally clear) CAUTION: Vue cannot render more than 5 layers of transparency on top of one another. At the 6th layer, all you will get is the fade out color (blue by default) -SMT

I have noticed from time to time, a bug in Vue where one of the edges of a transparency mapped plane will show up as a very thin line when rendered. It doesn't happen all the time, and I'm not sure what causes it, but it can be very annoying as I have to get rid of it in post touch-up. -SMT

Hello All, Well, I tried everyone's tips and am still getting the "blues". I'll put together an example of what I'm trying to do and post it. I think it isn't possible to do...yet...but we'll see. hdrider

Example1-2.jpg Here's a visual of what I'm working on. I've tried all the suggestions and they work fine with regular scenes but underwater is a different story. Any and all suggestions welcome. hdrider

I would need ALL the transparency settings for both the water and the plane. It's possibly a refraction problem.

heyas; dunno. here's a tip though: do NOT use a jpg for the trans map. they have a tendancy to make the blacks un-black, and mess up the flat areas of colour with those lossy thingies. use a 256-colour greyscale gif. (or tif... shoot, now i cant remember... vue doesn't do gifs, does it?) hmmm... it DOES look like a refraction problem. i can see the top darkening looks like the underside of the water wave things...

Example3.jpg Hello All, Narrowed my problem down to (as was suggested) to the transparency refraction. I upped it to 1.30 and the "blues" went away. However, if I increase the highlight, it comes back. I'll try bloodsong's suggestion of using other types of images for the trans (been using jpeg). Again, thanks to everyone for the help. hdrider
