Subject: Lion walk cycle- okay, so how complicated do you want this?

I've completed a walk cycle for the Poser lion. There are 8-frame, 24-frame and 30-frame versions.

I have also got the lion walking using Walk Designer. Not wonderfully, but walking nontheless. However, to get it to work I've had to edit both the character file and the geometry file. The Walk Designer pose file won't work properly as a pose file for the unedited lion, and the Walk Designer compatible lion won't work properly with poses for the standard lion.

Now, I could simply post the 3 versions of the walk cycle for the standard Poser lion. It won't work with Walk designer, but it will work with the standard lion, and I can submit it to Freestuff right away.

/Or/

I could write out instructions as to how to edit the files for the lion and include the Walk Designer pose file, which will then make it useable with Walk Designer but will take a little longer.

For those who already know how to edit the files and want to know the trick, just change all references in the .cr2 and .obj as follows: lFrontFoot to lHand, lBackFoot to lFoot, rFrontFoot to rHand and rBackFoot to rFoot. Walk Designer will now condescend to work with the lion. It's also advisable to give the altered .obj file a new name and change the pointers in the new .cr2 file to point it at the new geometry file!

The walk applied using Walk Designer.

xantor ( ) posted Sun, 18 January 2004 at 12:27 PM

Are these animated gifs? On my computer they only show up as static images and bitmaps.

HaiGan ( ) posted Sun, 18 January 2004 at 12:40 PM

They were animated gifs when I uploaded them, and they're showing as animations now. Anyone else got problems?

neftis ( ) posted Sun, 18 January 2004 at 12:43 PM

I see it very well and let me congrats you!!! Yes it would be cool to know how to edit...I personally would like to learn, you can IM if you want. Thanks for these! It's always hard to find good movements for animals.

mateo_sancarlos ( ) posted Sun, 18 January 2004 at 12:59 PM

Yes, gifs running well here. Very nice work. My vote is for you to do the 3-version non-walk-designer Poser lion set, since most people aren't able to edit obj and cr2 files. Then later, do the tutorial for walk designer conversion.

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Sun, 18 January 2004 at 2:11 PM

xantor, check your browser settings. Internet Explorer, for instance, has an option to play animations in web pages. If it's toggled off, animated .gifs will only display frame #1. Do you suppose the DAZ panther poses any better?

HeavyRay ( ) posted Sun, 18 January 2004 at 2:28 PM

Xantor - Do you have ZoneAlarm installed? I have it installed, with cookies and ad-blocking set to "medium." I find that I often have to set one or both of these to "off" in order to see "animated" things. Such was the case here with the lions. HTH - Ray

xantor ( ) posted Sun, 18 January 2004 at 2:38 PM

I fixed it! I do have zone alarm, in the add blocking I had adds to block-animation set.

xantor ( ) posted Sun, 18 January 2004 at 2:42 PM

Haigan, now that I can see the animations they look great!

Lawndart ( ) posted Sun, 18 January 2004 at 2:44 PM

Man this is nice. The three non-walk designer versions first would be great. I wonder how well these would work on the Millenium cat? Probably need a little work for the kitty once applied but it would get you almost there. Very nice work. Joe

Lawndart ( ) posted Sun, 18 January 2004 at 2:46 PM

Actually the walk designer one would be cool too. A lion walking on a walk path thrugh a scene. SWEET!

FishNose ( ) posted Sun, 18 January 2004 at 3:06 PM

Excellent!!!!! Very good. :] Fish

iamonk ( ) posted Sun, 18 January 2004 at 3:27 PM

These are fantastic. My vote...walk designer because of being able to follow a path. You've done great!! :)

markdc ( ) posted Sun, 18 January 2004 at 5:10 PM

Nice work.

HaiGan ( ) posted Sun, 18 January 2004 at 5:23 PM

Thank you. :) Having read the suggestions, I'll get something packaged up to submit on monday; either just the 3 walks or, if I've finished the 'how to', the 3 walks and the Walk Designer file. If I haven't got that last part done then I'll add it as an update later.

catlin_mc ( ) posted Sun, 18 January 2004 at 5:24 PM

Very smooth movement you've got, it's very well done. 8)

Thanks again, although I'm afraid I sound like an award-ceremony actor for saying it :8} . I do like figuring out how animals move- not just the mechanics and the effect of gravity and velocity, but also the characteristic mood, or personality, or feel, that makes them what they are. The thing birdwatchers call 'jizz' (which reminds me, a friend has challenged me to animate the morphed Daz eagle so it's possible to tell what species of bird it is just from the way it flies. Now there's a challenge and a half!). As to animating quadrupeds specifically, Muybridge photo sequences are invaluable. I can also occasionally be found travelling along the hallway on all fours, with occasional stops, starts and rewinds :p . Joe, my cat walk cycles (already in Freestuff) work pretty well with the MilCat, apart from the tail. Much better than the lion. If anyone's still reading, I've finished the tutorial on lion editing. I'm putting up another post asking if there's a Mac user who can translate my instructions for editing the lion into Macspeak. I think SimpleText will do it, but I don't know specifics about menus, labels, and file types on the Mac.

catlin_mc ( ) posted Mon, 19 January 2004 at 6:36 PM

I haven't yet attempted to animate in Poser, but you have given me a push in that direction and I look forward to reading your tut. Thanks 8) Catlin

Lawndart ( ) posted Mon, 19 January 2004 at 6:41 PM

Going for the cat animations now. Thanks, Joe

my only quibble is that male lions tend to be a bit slouchier about the shoulder movement than your fella ... although this one is an alert and aware lion, which is also good. Excellent work as usual ... any pounces planned? I can see Bloodsong's Antelopes looking nervous already ...

"my only quibble is that male lions tend to be a bit slouchier about the shoulder movement than your fella" Yes, I preferred my first effort from that point of view- it had that 'looks like a great lazy slob but if he can be bothered he can kill you in less than a second' sort of feel to it. Not sure what's next, but there's been a surprising amount of interest in this so I may well keep working on more stuff for the lion, and Dedicated Digital's tiger as well. See how far I can push the limits of the models!

...follow the link in my previous post. :)

xantor ( ) posted Wed, 21 January 2004 at 4:19 AM

Haigan, when you do these in the walk designer with four legged creatures, is it only the back legs that the walk designer animates? I was just wondering as I would like to try your method myself.

HaiGan ( ) posted Wed, 21 January 2004 at 7:35 AM

Walk Designer animates everything, xantor- back legs, front legs, head, tail, hip, the whole shebang- if you use it the right way! You DO need to make sure the character that you load up as the figure type is set up the right way- IK chains off and body parts named correctly. The lion uses non-standard body part names, hence the need to edit the character before it can be used in Walk Designer. You can modify the walk using some of the dials, such as 'Stride' and 'Head Bob' and 'Arm Swing', although you have to use those subtly unless you want a cartoon walk. All my Walk Designer compatible animation freebies include an explanation in the Readme on how to get the animal walking properly, not wobbling along with its front legs stuck out to either side (which is the usual result of sticking an animal through Walk Designer without tweaking a few things first). I remember how frustrated I got trying to get animals working with Walk Designer, so I've passed along the information now I've got things figured out! Hmm... I need to go back and redo the cat cycle a bit- I've learned more since I wrote that one, and I want to update it to include the MilCat.

xantor ( ) posted Wed, 21 January 2004 at 10:58 AM

Excellent! thank you!

shadownet ( ) posted Wed, 21 January 2004 at 7:19 PM

Haven't had a chance to play with it yet, but I did want to say Thanks! This is something I have been wanting.

I am currently trying to animate a panther running. I just came accross your cat run and look forward to the opportunity to break it down and improve on my panther run. Very nice work as animating the walk cycle of an animal is probably 4 times as hard as a human. Steve
