anything could work, there's tons of sites out there with Bryce objects, and a good rust mat would 'tarnish' any of them..;) just a thought, but I'd dunk it on the lower left, where the ripples start looking squarish, which would help..Bryce water's one of the few headaches this program gives me..;)

Rusty things don't usually float.

Could be worse, could be raining.

What if it weighs as much as a duck? Then it's made of wood... and therefore, A Witch! Burn It!

rickymaveety ( ) posted Tue, 20 January 2004 at 2:58 PM

It's a fair cop .... but rusty things don't burn, and therefore they are not made out of wood, they do not weigh as much as a duck and therefore they are NOT witches!! Ha .... ran rings around you logically!!

Could be worse, could be raining.

Erlik ( ) posted Tue, 20 January 2004 at 4:11 PM

ricky, would you join my round table? phil, go to planit3d.com. There are many interesting and useful objects in 3DS format, from cars to planes and water plants. You'll certainly find something that can be sufficiently rusty and will stick out of the water.

OK, it must be late, 'cause I don't understand what you peeps are talking about with rusty wooden ducks and stuff. Andnormally I can keep up with the twisted minds around here. In fact, I am one of the twisted minds around here. So all I can say is ANYWAY...... Rusty things can float. Look at old boats. Something to do with the weight of the thing must be less than the weight of the water it displaces? But thatsounds like witchcraft to me. As for objects, I think a shopping cart sticking out of the surface. OK, it's not a traditional object for such a tranquil scene, but realistic. Rather than something floating on the water, how about assuming that the land has looped around and get just part of the land in view and maybe a few plants. I'd do it in silhouette, but that's just me.

Sorry, I started thinking about things floating or not and my mind went to Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Try these for things that float,... or don't. http://www.3dcafe.com/asp/meshes.asp Hundreds of everything http://3dplants.0catch.com/index.html They have water plants including cattails and lillypads. Hope these are more help than my last smart alec remark.

rickymaveety ( ) posted Tue, 20 January 2004 at 5:40 PM

Sure, Erlik .... have coconuts, will travel. But, drawbridgep, if a boat's reeeeealy rusty, it'll have holes and it'll sink. Most really rusty things have holes in them. Of course, you're saying to yourself, "but, ducks have holes in them and THEY don't sink!!" ... however, then you're getting into that whole weight issue, and rusty things weigh more than ducks or wood. So, how about a big ol' rusted out car???!!

Could be worse, could be raining.

drawbridgep ( ) posted Tue, 20 January 2004 at 5:49 PM

Oh Monty Python. Duh! Sorry, missed that reference totally. Ricky, you never mentioned anything about it having holes in. That's a whole different kettle of fish, which would probably not float either. And most of the holes in a duck are above water. So, if a duck rusts, it gains weight? Where does the extra weight come from? A rusted out car? I would think that would float about as well as an unrusted one. Maybe i'll try that with my car. Which is the rusted one BTW. Night all, I'm sure we'll continue this tomorrow.

rickymaveety ( ) posted Tue, 20 January 2004 at 6:06 PM

The extra weight results from either: 1. The accumulation of duck oxide from contact with the air, OR 2. The accumulation of duck oxide collected from other rusting ducks and brought to the non-rusting ducks in hollowed out coconut shells transported by European swallows. It's all rather complex, really. (Nudge, nudge, wink, wink.)

I would recommend a small ship/boat of some sort.

Mrdodobird ( ) posted Tue, 20 January 2004 at 7:14 PM

This is a shallow pond! (at least, that's how it appeared to me) so having something stick out would be fine. Though if you wanted to be sure people understood, you could maybe have a little sand bar poking up through the water so people know how shallow it is.

Bothered me so much, I looked it up. Not certain whether they said "counteth" or "countest" in the film, but, both forms were used interchangeably during the period. So = hast = hath, dost = doth, countest = counteth ... all archaic forms used during the same medieval era. And, just to give you an idea what an anal retentive I am ... I actually lost sleep over this last night until I routed through my library for the information. I now return you to your regularly hijacked thread.
