Subject: If You Hate EdgeNet

bloodsong ( ) posted Tue, 19 September 2000 at 7:26 PM · edited Fri, 08 November 2024 at 4:20 PM

heyas; i can't believe you guys are doing this all over again. okay, if you weren't here a year ago, i guess you have an excuse; but the rest of you are just repeating history. there is NO cause for ANYbody to run around calling anyone else names (visitors or moderators), calling people nazis, dogs, blah blah blah; screaming and wailing and gnashing, and all those hystrionics. some people (you know who you are!) are even repeating their EXACT same statements and opinions they had last year. besides, some of the people who are leaving now, DIDN'T leave last year. so those who left last year were whiny sheep, and those who leave this year aren't? those who stay this year are nazis, and those who stayed last year weren't? this double-standard is just silly. look, edgenet and the (former) renderosity management had a disagreement and split. nobody likes that, but that's the way it is. yes, i would like to know what happened just as much as anybody else. screaming and ranting and ankle-biting isn't going to get anybody anywhere. if you have politely asked for an explanation, and didn't get one (or didn't like the one you got), then you should leave, if you feel that is in your best interests. there isn't anything you can do to change things. you certainly aren't gonna change anybody else's mind about THEIR staying or leaving. they are making their own decisions, which are just as valid as yours, so leave them alone. jack and ed don't want all this uproar and infighting to happen, so knock it off. also please remember, YOU can delete all your stuff, you don't have to wait for edgenet to do it for you. (granted, it'll take a while for you to search for all your stuff.) YOU can delete your membership, or change/withhold your personal information. YOU can leave renderosity at any time, you don't have to ask edgenet to ban you. if you need to vent your anger, frustration, rage, disappointment and sadness over this change... i dunno, rent a violent video game or something! :)

Jack and Ed have clearly stated... this... and only asked if they worked on a new site would people use it.. think that's a fair question... I don't agree with ANY name calling.. I have friends that may choose to stay here... but they are still my friends... and I respect them... I was not here last year.. But am sure Edgenet was... so what is their excuse...?

Good post, bloodsong. Thanks. I jumped on the bandwagon at the start, but as I watched the posts, I decided to do the same as I did last time, stick around and see what happens. When Jack and Ed build the new site, I will go there, too.

bloodsong, I also agree... well put, and very much in need of being said. I wasn't around for the PFO/Renderosity mess from last year, though, and I really wish I had taken my vacation this year right about now. Terrible situation, ain't it? It's amazing too, how quick so many people were to start jumping each other over it. I really don't think (anymore)that ANYONE ought to be jumped...well, maybe Edgenet, but then again I wasn't sitting in on the discussions, and so, the way I've tried to learn to look at things such as this is: "Who Knows?" Oh well, I just hope this place calms down soon. What really kind of makes me wonder though, is, "Will I too now get attacked for saying THIS?" It's happened to greater than me for lesser reasons! I'm reminded of a very famous quote from some unknown philosopher: "Shit Happens." Frankly, I'm amazed at how many people who arent' Ed or Jack or Jeff H, or Tim or Edgenet, or Renderosity have been taking this thing so seemingly personally. Do they get this angry all the time? Oh well..... Cheers! Mike< ducking for cover and wondering why

Mike JM, I think we are dealing with artistic and creative people who are accustomed to expressing their feelings. Occasionaly thta happens before the brian takes over and we have fights and name calling. As bloodsong has pointed out here and elsewhere, it is ashame that it has happened, but it has lets amke the best of it. I DO take note of the fact that Edgenet and Tim Choate are at the very center of the storm this year just like last year. If I leave Renderosity, it will be because of what the new management do or fail to do, not becaus eof anything that anyone else has done. On the other hand I would think long and hard about donating time, effort or money to what is clearly a commercial operation just like General Moters or Microsoft. If Edgenet/Renderosity wants moderator to work for them then they should PAY for them just like any other commercial opertion does thier employees! Mike W

I'm young to this site and too, almost jumped on a bandwagon. But I Jumped off! I got to see that it was becoming unproductive and unhealthy to myself. Now I can go back to playing!! (One of my favorite things!)

I've been buried in work for the last couple of months and havent been posting. Now I come back and it looks like the shit really has hit the fan. Looking at it all I can only say that if things carry on the way I like here I'll still use it, and, if Jack and Ed's site rocks I'll go there as well. try not to get too hot under the collar over this. Whether you decide to stay or go to the new site is irrelevant. It might be best to remember that most of us are in this to share our work and improve our work with others, any site is only a tool to do this.

CGAS!! you say exactlly what I mean.

bloodsong ( ) posted Wed, 20 September 2000 at 10:55 AM

heyas; i'm all for catharsis.... but there's really no point. ti didn't achieve diddly last time, and it won't achieve diddly this time. well, i can't say that, it DID achieve a very long, brutal, bloodthirsty feud last time. if that's what you want again... don't look at me, i ain't into it.

No, I don't hate EdgeNet. Why should I? But it's a company, and any company wants to earn money by its nature. This means, EdgeNet wants to make profit with Renderosity, and (among all other things) with my (very few) images, I've posted in the gallery! But my pictures are not ment to be sold in any way! I'd posted them for free as a Thank You for all the free downloads I've gotten from R'osity and their members. I'll withdraw my images from the gallery now, and certain forum postings which contain images, too. But I want to get my membership up, so I can come in from time to time and look, how things are going on. Goodby to all friends for the moment. I felt well here, and may come back later. Good luck to EdgeNet and the new Renderosity-team. - Werner

bloodsong ( ) posted Thu, 21 September 2000 at 6:19 PM

heyas; nobody is selling the art you post here, and they're not going to. if they try to put that in their TOS... there wouldn't be a site, for real! but they do want to sell user info to advertisers, or 'rent' it to them, or whatever they do with mailing lists or demographics.

rcook ( ) posted Thu, 21 September 2000 at 7:03 PM

As far as I know, Edgenet has no intentions to sell or rent any of the user info to advertisers. The only demographics our advertisers get, is when a user fills out the survey banner. That info goes directly to BurstMedia.

wal ( ) posted Fri, 22 September 2000 at 3:16 AM

I didn't speak about direct selling or renting of my or anybody's images or user infos. My concern is: 1) My (now removed) images were part of Renderosity 2) Renderosity has become part of EdgeNet, a company 3) Any company's goal is to make profit 4) Conclusion: EdgeNet has tried to make money with my images without my permission! - Werner

rcook ( ) posted Fri, 22 September 2000 at 7:32 AM

Edgenet has never claimed any type of ownership of your images. You are free to post them here. You are free to remove them. As stated in the Terms of Service, total ownership and copyright to your images always remains with you. The only way Edgenet makes money from your images, is by attracting an audience to view your images and showing that audience banner ads to recoup our costs in maintaining this site.

PJF ( ) posted Fri, 22 September 2000 at 1:35 PM
  1. Your images were not part of Renderosity except in that they happened to be posted here, by you. 2) Renderosity has always been part of EdgeNet since before it was called Renderosity. It belongs to EdgeNet. 3) Yes, all commercial enterprises are designed to return a profit. This includes DSI, the company owned by Jack and Ed which was contracted to run Renderosity for EdgeNet (recently dismissed). You might want to remember that DSI is a company if and when you choose to post your pictures elsewhere... 4) Renderosity/EdgeNet has been trying to make a profit with this site almost since its inception. The structure has been clear to see for anyone with open eyes. When you posted your images, you should have made yourself aware of the setup. It's your problem if you 'gave permission' by not actually looking to see what the place was really all about. As far as the ownership and indirect dollar value of your artwork is concerned, nothing has changed since EdgeNet dismissed DSI from running their site. Your artwork would have been just as safe, or unsafe, as it has been from the day you first posted it. You might want to look upon it that you made a kind of deal. You wanted to post your pictures in a popular, publicly accessed, online gallery; and the payment that you made for that service was that EdgeNet could, very indirectly, make money from them.

wal ( ) posted Sat, 23 September 2000 at 3:46 AM

PJF, you're right in all points. I've withdrawn my images anyway because of the way the recent changes at Renderosity took place. But I'm still a member, and I want to stay a member. I think, as soon as things have calmed down a bit, I'll also repost my images or post new ones. I'm trying to stay in a save distance off all the mess. I'll wait and look until the smoke has settled down and gives a clearer view to all of us. - wal
