Now available (for free) at Vanishing Point: the TIE Fighter, from *Star Wars*, *The Empire Strikes Back*, and *Return of the Jedi*. This model has been "optimized" for use in Poser... but unlike my other vehicles, this model is a prop (instead of a figure). No moving parts or texture maps are needed, but it's scaled to the Poser people Please note that this item is available only to members of Vanishing Point. Excellent, there is just one small thing though, on your x-wing there is no phong shading on some of the parts and the hull of the tie fighter has no phong shading too, it would probably look better with the phong shading.

If you smooth the whole thing and load it into uvmapper and do split vertices, then the hull will be smooth but the hard edges will still be hard edges.

Both the X-Wing and TIE Fighter were brought into UV Mapper and then I applied the "split verticies" option. The dead give-away is the sharp, straight edges- without the "split verticies" option, the wing edges would look rounded. And how do you do "phong shading" in Poser 4? :) --John

I am used to using other 3d progs that`s why I called it phong shading. There must be some way to make the tie fighter hull "smooth" though.

Here are methods that I can think of: 1) You would have to not split the vertitices, which would give a nice, rounded look. However, this would affect the wings and any square detailing on the cockpit area. 2) Make the model as pieces: the cockpit area can be imported without splitting verticies and the wings (and detailing) could be brought in with split verticies. I may give this method idea a try with the TIE Interceptor. :) 3) Be able to adjust the "smoothing angle": edges (90 degrees) would not be smoothed, but polygons on a sphere would be smoothed. Unfortunately, Poser has no way of doing this: the smoothing angle is locked at around 120 degrees (or so). --John

or there's another way in UVmapper select everything but the sphere and split by region...

xantor ( ) posted Sun, 14 March 2004 at 5:09 PM

I know number 1 is useless the second idea does sound like the best. I have done split vertices using uvmapper and the rounded parts stayed smooth, maybe I did it wrong, though.

okies.. got this baby in UVmapper right now.. let you all know when it's ready...

hows this?

xantor ( ) posted Sun, 14 March 2004 at 6:47 PM

That is great! what did you do?

in UVmapper I welded all vertices - to give a clean slate ;) selected by material the window and put that to one side.. the selected the sphere hull, (right click select by geometery), and again, moved that to one side. I selected what was left and split the vertices by region. leaving the hull and the window smooth.. (also in this image I went over the ball hull again and fixed some of the smoothing errors - mostly by selecting by UV region to get the ball and not the raised parts - the raised parts I then split vertices by region) I can email the OBJ to be posted up if you want? ooops then rendered using the poorman's HRDI from RNDA ;)

xantor ( ) posted Sun, 14 March 2004 at 7:06 PM

It looks much better like that. The x-wing is the same, the hull and nose have no smoothing, I think the b-wing is like that too (hint hint).

Khai ( ) posted Sun, 14 March 2004 at 11:03 PM

weell... taking a look at the B-Wing right now.. bigger job.. not seen the X-Wing yet...

Khai ( ) posted Mon, 15 March 2004 at 1:16 AM

B-Wing done.. check the B-Wing thread you know.. we need a Rebel Pilot here !

numanoid ( ) posted Mon, 15 March 2004 at 1:26 AM

What? Did I just hear Khai offering to make a rebel pilot? Lol.

xantor ( ) posted Mon, 15 March 2004 at 7:58 AM

Khai it would be good if these were sent to john hoagland to distribute them as they are so much better. You could maybe send him an IM in case he doesn`t read this thread again and ask him if he wants to?

Khai ( ) posted Mon, 15 March 2004 at 1:10 PM

I've sent him an IM ;) waiting for him to get that and get back to me.. working on the Xwing next tho... also check out my gallery for a pic of the Bwing in action...

JHoagland ( ) posted Mon, 15 March 2004 at 5:46 PM

Yep, definitely send me the obj files and I'll add them to the zip files. And that B-Wing is pretty sweet looking! :) I'll have to try your trick with my next rounded ship. --John
