i am a total beginner beguiled by Poser --- so i bot poser 5 for the mac --- now i realize i don't know what to do, how to run it, what DAZ is and anything else I might know, i don't. i run strata 3d and fool around with Final Cut Pro --- i need guidance --- i want to learn. Specifically now, What is DAZ and should I buy one? Would anyone of you give guidance?

MachineClaw ( ) posted Mon, 15 March 2004 at 2:39 PM

Daz is a company they have a product that they are working on called Daz|Studio. Daz Studio is a poser like program with different features, a different renderer. Daz creates and sells poser models and content. www.daz3d.com for more about their store and what they have. Daz Studio will be free for the base application, and later addons for more functionality would cost, but it's all a bit early as to what the addons will be and what the final version of the application will be. I'm interested in finding out more about Daz and Newteks' new partnership that has been illuded to in posts and such and what Lightwave v8 and Daz have going on. I haven't decided if I'm going to upgrade to lightwave v8 as it's $495 and I do not know if I need it, but if Daz has something up it's sleave with their content or some such I'd like to read about it to see if spending money with either company would be a wise investment. rumors, speculation, but no real data yet.

Here's the link to DAZ's site. I checked the forum, and can't find any notice of the Public Release of DAZ Studio. But it's barely the 19th, and who knows which forum they'd post in?!

I found a notice in the forum that DAZ Studio was being released today, but no actual release yet, at least I can't find it.

MachineClaw ( ) posted Fri, 19 March 2004 at 5:14 PM

Daz has been notorious as of late for posting that something will be done and then letting the date slip. They follow through eventually, or a notice about the delay comes later. Mimic 2.1 update notice, delay, no email notice but update posted. Mimic online resource page notice, still hasn't happened on their web site. Daz Studio update will come eventually, lately I read the notices and then add 4 days to when they say it will happen, then I'm not disapointed.

We are tweaking a couple of more things and will be releasing later today. We will post in our forum and Renderosity when the build is ready to be downloaded. Full details of the release will accompany the notice. Thanks for your interest, Bryan Brandenburg

I love it when someone says "it will be announced in the forum." Which DAZ forum? I skimmed through the two forums I usually read, Nuts N Bolts, and The Commons. I see no DAZ Studio announcements there. I don't belong to the Platinum Club, so I wouldn't see the announcment there.

D|S had a last bug to squash so it's going to be released tomorrow. The announcement is in the D|S Feedback Forum. (I'm not sure why it ended up there.) Sorry the post was hard to find!

MachineClaw ( ) posted Sat, 20 March 2004 at 1:12 AM

D|S Feedback Forum is only available to PClub members. So is the next inception of Daz Studio still Alpha only for PClub members? I thought I read that the next release was for everybody?

Crescent ( ) posted Sat, 20 March 2004 at 10:14 AM

I didn't realize that forum was PClub only. I don't have all the info on the latest D|S release so if the (expected) announcement later today doesn't say, I'll go ask around. Cheers!

Jackson ( ) posted Sat, 20 March 2004 at 1:57 PM

The way I understood it, only the beta will be available to everyone. If it's still in alpha, only PC members get it. For all you DS testers...how's about some more updates and screen shots when the new one comes out?

scaramouche ( ) posted Sat, 20 March 2004 at 2:09 PM

Ah, that's not technically correct - I've been alpha testing D|S for the past six weeks now and I'm on a Mac running OS 10.2.8. And no, I'm not a Platinum Club member either. -scara

Crescent ( ) posted Sat, 20 March 2004 at 2:22 PM

There was a limited time last month when everyone was an honorary PClub member and could dowload the Alpha version of D|S. (PClub members got an extra month of membership for free.) There should be more information shortly on D|S. Cheers!

Barryw ( ) posted Sat, 20 March 2004 at 3:16 PM

"There should be more information shortly on D|S." Is this in human time or Daz time? Human Time "shortly"= day or so. Daz Time "shortly" = could be weeks. Just wondering.

neostarbuck ( ) posted Sat, 20 March 2004 at 3:22 PM

We'll be uploading within an hour, which is shortly, which is DAZ Time.

neostarbuck ( ) posted Sat, 20 March 2004 at 3:51 PM

The new build is now available. Download information is available in the Platinum Club Forum. This is the last Alpha/Platinum Club release. We will begin the Beta program within 1-2 weeks. Bryan Brandenburg DAZ Productions.

Non-Platinum Club members can take a look at the manual at the above link.

Grace37 ( ) posted Sat, 20 March 2004 at 6:39 PM

"We will begin the Beta program within 1-2 weeks." I also rember them saying "The Public Beta release of D|S is set for earlie december" (not an exact quote)

Bobbie_Boucher ( ) posted Sat, 20 March 2004 at 11:48 PM

I'll pass on the manual unless it's better than what I saw a few weeks ago. The one chapter I saw said Vicky and Mike came with DAZ Studio, and the chapter was not even complete. I got the alpha version when they opened the PC Club. I never saw any directions on how to use the program, and never bothered with it.

MachineClaw ( ) posted Sun, 21 March 2004 at 6:13 AM

When everybody got the free pclub there was a post that the following release would be fore everybody. Now it's another alpha for pclub members. Another few weeks for PClub members then a public release for the rest of us. Read the manual? That stings a bit. Wake me when the public beta alpha gama thingy is available for everybody.

gpacioli ( ) posted Sun, 21 March 2004 at 3:59 PM

i give up ---- all i wanted to know is "what is this thing called 'DAZ Studio --- what does it do? why should i be interested in it? what other thing would better return satisfactiom?

Philywebrider ( ) posted Sun, 21 March 2004 at 4:33 PM

I downloaderd the new version and I can't load in any of the Egyption scene or parts of it. I see it listed but clicking on it does nothing. I'm not posting it as a bug, I think I'm doing something wrong, but I don't know what. :O(

Grace37 ( ) posted Tue, 23 March 2004 at 8:01 AM

well so far it seems like a wonderfull program it picks up where poser leaves you wanting it has realtime rendering and transparencys instead of a point cloud it shows the hair it is a wonderfull program so far even in its limited alpha stage but we are all just getting a bit testy with all the promises and not getting satasfaction all we want is regular updates on the progress but they wount even do that the D|S page at daz3d hasent been updated in months and months they are leaveing us all in the dark and once in a while promiseing it will be released in 1 or 2 weeks and it never is so i hope you can understand why we all reacted so grumpily anybody who is treated like a second rate citizen anywhere gets testy i for one am sorry if i upset you gpacioli .

Jackson ( ) posted Tue, 23 March 2004 at 11:00 AM

I wish some people would be a little more patient. After all, look at what DAZ is doing: creating a whole new program from scratch. And while doing so, they are still maintaing their regular business and support. Okay, so they don't always meet their deadlines and can't always update info for us. But remember all the hand-holding and coddling everyone did for CL on P5? And CL wasn't creating a whole new program and P5 was the only thing they were working on. C'mon guys, let's show DAZ at least half the courtesy the community showed CL.
