THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Radius/Filet Tool

susanmoses ( ) posted Wed, 31 March 2004 at 11:19 AM · edited Fri, 08 November 2024 at 9:38 PM

I have a door that I want to radius at the corners... somewhat like a submarine hatch. I can't find a tool to radius with. Thank you for your help. -Susan

That sort of modeling tool is too advanced for Bryce. ;o) The only ways i know of getting around that is to either use a lattice for the door where you can draw the shape you want or to use cubes and cylinders to create the corner shapes. If there are others i'm sure people will chime in.

One possibility comes to mind - could you use a terrain? Set the brush to a reasonable height and just fill in, but leave the corners rounded? (You'd also be able to create some detailing if your hand is steady enough - mine wouldn't be..) Then clip off the "ground level" and flip 90 degrees in the x or z axis. Just thinkang aloud here... Cheers, Diolma

You could achieve fillet with some creative Booleaning, but you're better off with the lattices and terrains, as they suggest.

I tried my terrain idea: forget that route, the edges get lost and the corners are too coarse. Oh, well, it was worth a try. (I also tried using a bitmap created in a paint prog to get better accuracy, but that didn't work either.) Back to the drawing-board... (Hmm. Maybe it's time to experiment with some of the boolean options I've ignored so far.) Cheers, Diolma

Is this what you want to achieve Susan? The total dimensions of the door are x=40, y=40, z=10 ('cos they're reasonably easy numbers to work with). I created 2 squares, set x=30, y=40 for one, x-40,y=30 for the other. Then created 4 cylinders (each 10x10x10) and positioned them (in x/y axes) at (15,15), (-15,15), (15,-15), -15,-15). Then grouped them and rotated them til I could see what I'd done. I've not yet thought about how to texture it... Cheers, Diolma

oops - for "squares" read "cubes"

Mrdodobird ( ) posted Wed, 31 March 2004 at 4:48 PM

My opinion has been, if it can be thought up, it can be done with Booleans!!!!(unless if it's organic) however, I don't know what "radius" is, so I can't help. Sorry!

susanmoses ( ) posted Wed, 31 March 2004 at 5:11 PM

Hi diolma, That's exactly what I want... just different dimensions... so I'll try it. I achieved something close to this with the Booleans, but the faces are rounded as well, causing shawdows I don't want. Back to Bryce to try it myself. Thank you so much, Susan

MuddyGrub ( ) posted Wed, 31 March 2004 at 6:59 PM

Bryce 5 comes with a rounded cube object that looks pretty similar. Did you take a look at that?

susanmoses ( ) posted Wed, 31 March 2004 at 7:13 PM

@ Diolma: It worked perfectly, but was very hard getting the geometry placed just right. Since I am doing door in one colour w/a slightly larger border in black... there were (12 pieces) in all to move around until I got it just right. The rounded cube boolean didn't work as I needed a flat face and the rounded cube is slighty rounded on the face. Thanks for figuring out this puzzle. You smarty pants. Warm regards, Susan

it's 1/2 the diameter of a circle..c'mon..didn't y'all take Geometry?..;) in Wings, you could take a cube and bevel 4 sides of it..;) smooth the edges if you like..;) our mission goes on..;)

I tried iit in a terrian using the PSP rounded rectangle, and this is what I get...I did this really qiuck so I didn't bother with smoothing the radius in PSP. To raise an edge or other detail, just use greyscale. This would be the easiest way instead of booleaning..

BTW, you could make it as thick as you wanted...

Thanks all... I have it now. Here's what I was trying to do. When It's not embedded in the wall... it looks like the piece diolma posted. This is a cutaway of my next post... so stay tuned. And now the model beckons... -Susan

A little bit OT, but there are Brycers who love Wings, and vice versa... Err... Pakled, a better way to do it is to start with a default cylinder and cut it into quarters. Move 'em apart. Bridge two pairs, then dissolve the faces on the inside and bridge again. Makes the corners a bit rounder and nicer. Also if you wanted to play with the math, one could figure the exact corner radius and door dimensions. ...Extrude a bit here and there, etc. and you can make something like this. (Any more on this kind of stuff, and I'll start having flashbacks to when I had to look up Heintz model equivalents for QAWTD's in maritime supply vending catalog...LOL)

oh..ok..yeah..I was just workin' off me head, instead of at the screen..the lazy man's way..;) I did a safe door a while back, something like this, but not quite..still recommend the program to anyone who needs to model, tho..;)

Thx for the thx, Susan. I'm glad it worked. The thing I learned whilst doing that was "STOP! Think about the math". By keeping the numbers simple, I was able to do it fairly easily (all parameters were entered numerically, not via the tools). And it only took me 30 mins to do it (including a couple of "oops: glad I saved recently" incidents). So I learned a lesson and managed to help at the same time! Insert feeling of warm, suffused glow here Cheers, Diolma
