This is something I did for a friends website (he reviews comics). This is p5 Don that I've tried to replicate the look and feel of an older comic book cover. Its left sparse so that it might be used as a background for some html links

You might like to look at the fonts over at blambot... they are designed for use in comic enterprises... and include display fonts as well as lots of text bubble fonts. I'd make two suggestions. Normally the eyes should be focussed upon whatever is being hit. If he has swung a haymaker, the fist would already be leveled. Since it isn't, he hasn't connected yet. therefore he ought to be looking at the camera, if the viewer is supposed to be the target. You can do this with the "point at" command, or there are handy focussing aids in free stuff. (Have the eyes point at a sphere, then move the sphere behind the camera or wherever you need the eyes to look.) IMHO, it will have more impact if he is looking at the viewer. My second query... where's the treadmill? Or treads? Or a runner? The image and the title don't sync. One suggestion would be to turn that fist into tank treads, since he is non-human anyway. Just a thought. Carolly

It doesn`t have to have a treadmill in the picture, that is being a bit too literal.

Carolly, turning the fist into tank threads will only make sense to native english speakers I think. I would NEVER associate tank threads with threadmills or anythingelse "thread-like". **** Unneeded trivia: In danish, tank threads are called "larvefder" meaning the feet of larvae (you know those wormy things that turn into butterflies).

well, I have to say, when Marvel comics came out with thier superheroes, I don't think they were looking for real life people...hence spiderman (or was that DC), anyway, the point is not the realism to people, but rather the realism to the peoples mindseye of what thier heroes look like. (Which could be anything). I trained and studied shau-lin for 12 years, and the one thing I learned, was never keep your eyes on one opponent (else his buddy will stab you in the back) hence the realism of the eyes not looking at the camera. the treadmill is simply a background marker of a title, a descriptive term used loosly as a verb more than anything else. (Still love the colors!)

I think it looks great, and that the fonts and text work very well. A few minor suggestions. 1)Intensify the eye color, maybe brighten up the ambient for the irises a bit. Right now it sort of blends into the background. 2)Reduce the amount of texture detail on the hands and face. Those two areas look a bit too "rotoscoped" and are incongruous with the rest of the picture. 3)Deemphasize the eyelashes - it would make the character look a bit less human - maybe remove them altogether. 4)Increase the musculature some perhaps? 5)Experiment with eye and head shape to "dehumanize" the character a bit more. 6)Give the eyes a bit more squint/frown, and the mouth a bit more grimace. It'll make it look like he really wants to do some damage. 7)Go for a gradient in the background from red to orange - the sudden transition as it is breaks up the image slightly. As I said they're minor suggestions. Overall I like it, and think its an effective image. Unzipped

Thanks everyone for the feed back! I need to clear up some things I guess. The comic treadmill is the name of my buddies web site - It has nothing to do really with the image. Also the comic treadmill (from what mike described to me) is a play on words referring to the Cosmic Treadmill. This is supposed to be a vague reference to a piece of equipment used by "The Flash" that enabled him to travel though time by running on a treadmill. You might find it interesing, that the only post work on this is the compositing of the text, the swoosh, paper texture , and two images straight from a p5 render. What I did here was to use the lighting node:diffuse:cartoon. Posed don, teaked his ears and nose, added a little anger morph and made two renders, one was regular render and a second sketch style which produces all of the pencil lines in black and white. In photoshop, I simply layered the two and added text. The whole thing took about 20 minutes... I was just tickled with the results for just playing around. Try for yourself comping two images this way... I could be a really good technique for producing this kind of thing.
